Ishi (c. 1861-1916) was the last known member of the Yahi, a Native American people who lived in Northern California. After losing his family and community to violence, disease, and displacement, he survived alone in the wilderness for many years. In 1911, he emerged near Oroville, California, unable to speak English and unfamiliar with modern American society. Anthropologists worked with him to document the Yahi language, traditions, stories, and survival skills, preserving an important part of Native American history. Ishi died in 1916, but his story remains a powerful symbol of resilience and the lasting impact of cultural loss.
