This video elegantly deconstructs how 1970s engineering turned a mechanical compromise into a masterclass in aerodynamic foresight. It’s a sharp reminder that even the most aggressive machines must bow to physics before they can conquer the sky.

Why did the F-14 Tomcat's nose drop before every catapult launch?Añadido:
Why did the F-14 Tomcat's nose gear sink before every catapult launch? I'm an aerospace engineer and the reason was aerodynamic. The F-14's design generated a lot of lift even at low speeds and during the catapult stroke. That meant the aircraft would have a tendency to lift off while still hooked to the shuttle. So, the fix was a nose gear that could kneel. The pilot flips a switch, the strut compresses 14 in and the nose drops to 1 and 1/2 degrees below level. That negative angle was enough to remove the F-14's tendency to fly during the run but it also acted as a built-in safety check. Since the launch bar cannot deploy and be connected until the gear was kneeled.
This also had the benefit of strengthening the strut and pre-compressed the gas inside it. When the catapult fired, the launch force squeezed the strut another 4 in storing energy. When the launch bar released from the shuttle, that stored energy was released and rotated the aircraft 12 to 15 degrees off the deck helping it enter a climb the moment it left the carrier without pilot input.
