LARGEST EMPIRES IN HISTORY – From Rome to Britain (Animated Timeline)Added:
The largest empires in history didn't just rule land, they shaped civilizations. [music] From regional powers to giants that controlled a quarter of the world, we go from smallest to enormous.
The Roman Empire at its peak [music] controlled around 5 million square kilometers from Britain to Mesopotamia.
Rome was a marvel of engineering with aqueducts, [music] roads, and cities. Latin became the foundation for European languages.
Despite [music] civil wars and barbarian invasions, Rome's legacy shaped the Western world. Its fall in 476 AD marked the end of ancient history. The Ottoman Empire reached about 5.2 million square kilometers. With its capital [music] in Constantinople, it spanned Southeastern Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East. Ottomans controlled crucial trade routes between [music] East and West.
The empire endured for over 600 years before collapsing after World War I.
Alexander the Great forged an empire stretching 5.2 million square kilometers [music] from Greece to India in just over a decade. He spread culture across three continents, but Alexander died at age 32. His empire quickly fragmented, yet his influence lived on [music] for centuries. The Empire of Japan controlled roughly 7.4 million square kilometers across Asia. Japan [music] occupied Korea, Manchuria, Taiwan, and Southeast Asia. But after defeats in World War II and the atomic [music] bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered in 1945. The empire dissolved. The Spanish [music] Empire covered about 14.7 million square kilometers, becoming one of the first truly global empires. Gold and silver from the New World fueled its rise.
Spanish became a global language, but costly wars and revolutions eventually weakened Spanish control. [music] The Qing Dynasty reached a peak size of about 14.7 million square kilometers, the largest [music] Chinese empire ever.
It expanded west into Central Asia.
Trade with Europe increased through tea and porcelain, but internal [music] corruption and resistance to modernization weakened the dynasty.
Revolution ended over a millennium of [music] imperial rule in 1912. The Russian Empire expanded to around 22.8 million square kilometers from Eastern Europe [music] to the Pacific. It was a massive autocracy with vast natural resources, but social unrest grew.
[music] The 1917 Russian Revolution ended the empire replacing it with the Soviet Union. The Mongol Empire founded by Genghis [music] Khan became the largest contiguous land empire in history covering roughly 24 million square kilometers. Mongol horsemen [music] swept across Asia, the Middle East and Western Europe. Despite their brutal reputation, the Mongols established trade and cultural exchange across continents. And finally, the British Empire. [music] At its peak, it controlled nearly a quarter of the Earth's land mass, about 35.5 million square kilometers with colonies on every continent. London ruled over territories from Canada to Australia, [music] India to Kenya.
English law, language and culture spread globally. After two world wars and rising independence movements, the empire rapidly declined. Today, Britain's global legacy continues to shape the modern world. Thanks for [music] watching. Subscribe for more.
