But after defeats in World War II and the atomic [music] bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan surrendered in 1945. The empire dissolved. The Spanish [music] Empire covered about 14.7 million square kilometers, becoming one of the first truly global empires. Gold and silver from the New World fueled its rise.
