[00:00:04]Today, we are covering something really important. The 10 core rules of German grammar.

[00:00:11]These are the rules that unlock the entire language. Once you understand these 10 things, you will have a solid foundation to build everything else on.

[00:00:21]Let's dive in.

[00:00:25]Rule number one.

[00:00:27]The noun gender.

[00:00:29]Very first rule is absolutely fundamental.

[00:00:33]Every noun in German has a gender.

[00:00:36]Masculine, feminine, or neuter.

[00:00:40]Der is for masculine, for example, der Mann.

[00:00:45]Die is for feminine, for example, die Frau.

[00:00:50]Und das ist for neuter, for example, das Kind.

[00:00:55]The rule is never learn a noun without its article.

[00:00:59]Always, der Tisch, never just Tisch.

[00:01:05]Why? Because the article changes later depending on the case and the sentence structure.

[00:01:11]If you don't know the article, you'll get lost. So, always learn them together, article and noun as one unit.

[00:01:23]Rule two.

[00:01:24]Plural is always die, no matter what the gender.

[00:01:29]This one is beautifully simple.

[00:01:32]Der Mann, die Männer.

[00:01:35]Die Frau, die Frauen.

[00:01:38]Das Kind, die Kinder.

[00:01:42]Plural, always die. No exceptions. Whether it's masculine, feminine, or neuter.

[00:01:50]The moment you go plural, you have to use die. No exceptions. Enjoy it. It's one of the rare truly exception free rules in German.

[00:02:02]Now, let's talk sentence structure.

[00:02:05]Rule number three, the verb always goes second. This is one of the biggest differences between German and English.

[00:02:15]Ich lerne Deutsch. Verb is in the second position.

[00:02:19]Heute lerne ich Deutsch.

[00:02:21]Verb is again in the second position.

[00:02:25]Morgen gehe ich nach Hause. Verb is in the second position.

[00:02:30]You can move anything to the front, a time expression, a place, an object. But the verb always stays in second position, always.

[00:02:41]This is called verb second word order.

[00:02:46]Rule four, verb conjugation.

[00:02:49]In English, almost everything stays the same. I learn, you learn, we learn.

[00:02:56]In German, the verb changes depending on who is doing the action.

[00:03:02]Ich lerne.

[00:03:04]Du lernst.

[00:03:06]Er, sie, es lernt.

[00:03:09]Wir lernen.

[00:03:11]Ihr lernt.

[00:03:12]Sie, sie lernen.

[00:03:16]Learn this pattern once. It works for most regular verbs.

[00:03:24]Rule five, sein and haben.

[00:03:28]These two verbs are the most important in the entire German language. You need them for everything, the present, the past, descriptions, possession.

[00:03:40]Ich bin.

[00:03:42]Du bist.

[00:03:44]Er, sie, es ist. Wir sind. Ihr seid.

[00:03:48]Sie, sie sind.

[00:03:51]Ich habe. Du hast.

[00:03:54]Er, sie, es.

[00:04:01]>> If you have to memorize only two verbs, make it these.

[00:04:09]Rule six.

[00:04:11]First two cases that every beginner needs, the nominative versus the accusative.

[00:04:19]Now we get into cases and I know it might sound scary, but here's the truth.

[00:04:24]For beginners, only one thing changes.

[00:04:27]As you can see in the table, only der changes in accusative.

[00:04:33]It changes to den.

[00:04:35]Everything else remains the same.

[00:04:38]That means only the masculine article changes.

[00:04:42]This is your entry point into German cases. And with just this one rule, you can already say a huge amount.

[00:04:54]Rule seven, negation.

[00:04:56]Nicht versus kein.

[00:04:59]How do you say not or no in German?

[00:05:01]There are two words and it matters which one you use.

[00:05:06]Nicht is used mostly for verbs and adjectives.

[00:05:10]Das ist nicht gut.

[00:05:13]Kein is used for nouns.

[00:05:16]Ich habe kein Geld.

[00:05:18]Remember, whenever you're negating a noun, use kein. Negating anything else, use nicht.

[00:05:29]Rule eight, asking questions.

[00:05:32]Two simple ways to form any question in German.

[00:05:36]Number one, with a question word.

[00:05:39]That means a W word, a verb plus subject.

[00:05:45]Wo ist der Bahnhof?

[00:05:47]And the second way is by forming a yes-no question.

[00:05:51]The verb comes first.

[00:05:53]Sprichst du Deutsch?

[00:05:57]There's a simple rule.

[00:05:59]Flip the verb to the front and you have a yes-no question. Simple.

[00:06:06]Rule nine is about using modal verbs in German.

[00:06:11]There are six words that will instantly supercharge your German.

[00:06:16]Six of these are können müssen, wollen sollen dürfen, mögen.

[00:06:25]And here are the examples.

[00:06:28]Können.

[00:06:29]Ich kann sprechen. I can speak.

[00:06:33]Müssen.

[00:06:35]Ich muss lernen.

[00:06:37]I must learn.

[00:06:39]Wollen.

[00:06:41]Ich will Kaffee.

[00:06:43]I want coffee.

[00:06:46]Sollen.

[00:06:48]Du sollst üben.

[00:06:50]You should practice.

[00:06:52]Dürfen.

[00:06:54]Man darf nicht parken.

[00:06:57]You may not park.

[00:06:59]Mögen.

[00:07:01]Ich mag Deutsch.

[00:07:03]I like German.

[00:07:06]Do remember the modal verb goes second.

[00:07:10]The main verb in infinitive goes to the end.

[00:07:16]And this is also our next and the last rule.

[00:07:20]The final rule that ties everything together.

[00:07:24]When you have two verbs in a sentence, the modal verb goes second and the infinitive goes last.

[00:07:31]Ich kann Deutsch sprechen.

[00:07:34]Wir müssen jetzt gehen.

[00:07:38]Er möchte Kaffee trinken.

[00:07:41]Once again whenever there are two verbs in a sentence, the modal goes second and the infinitive goes at the last.

[00:07:54]Now, let's summarize all the 10 rules.

[00:07:58]The first one, noun gender, always learn der die das together with the noun.

[00:08:04]Nummer zwei, plural is always die. There are no exceptions.

[00:08:10]Number three, verb always goes second, no matter what comes first.

[00:08:16]Number four, verbs need to be conjugated. They change depending on the subject.

[00:08:22]Number five, sein and haben, the most important verbs in German.

[00:08:29]Learn their tables. Just learn them cold.

[00:08:32]Number six, there's only one change in case of accusative.

[00:08:40]Everything else stays the same.

[00:08:43]Number seven, nicht versus kein, use nicht for verbs and adjectives, kein for nouns.

[00:08:52]Number eight, flip the verb to the front for a yes-no question.

[00:08:58]Number nine, learn the six modal verbs.

[00:09:02]Remember, modal verb stays in the second position and infinitive at the last.
