A clause is a group of words containing a subject and a verb that expresses a complete thought; independent clauses can stand alone as sentences, while dependent clauses cannot stand alone and require an independent clause to complete the thought, typically starting with subordinating conjunctions like 'if' or 'when'.

what is Clause | Types of Clause|Added:
Welcome dear students. Today we are going to learn about clause. A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb and gives a complete thought. There are two types of clauses, dependent and independent. An independent clause contains a subject and a verb and is a complete thought. It can stand alone as a sentence. While a dependent clause also contains a subject and a verb but does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone and depends on an independent clause.
Mobeen obeys his teachers. In this sentence Mobeen is the subject while obeys is the verb. And it gives a complete thought so it is. If babies are hungry, it is a dependent clause because it doesn't complete the thought and requires an independent clause, they cry, to complete the thought. Every dependent clause starts with a subordinating conjunction that makes it an incomplete thought. You can see subordinating conjunctions on the screen. She cooks is an independent clause and if we say it with a subordinating conjunction like when she cooks, it becomes a dependent clause.
Let's understand through another example. If you heat ice, it melts.
Here, if you heat ice is a dependent clause and it melts is an independent clause. I hope this video will help you a lot understanding clause. Keep watching our videos and don't forget to follow our Facebook page, English with AI tutor. Thank you. Allah Hafiz.
