Comprehensive infrastructure improvements that combine multiple safety measures—such as increased lighting, dedicated pedestrian pathways, and traffic calming features—can significantly reduce pedestrian fatalities on dangerous roadways. The city of Henderson's $1.6 million project on Boulder Highway, Nevada's deadliest road, demonstrates how addressing visibility, physical barriers, and traffic flow simultaneously creates a safer environment for all road users, including pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists.

Henderson installs 400 streetlights on Boulder Highway to stop pedestrian deathsAdded:
A chain-link fence dividing Boulder Highway. It runs 4 miles from Desert Inn to Flamingo. We told you about this $1.6 million investment by Clark County meant to stop jaywalking across the street and cut down on the number of pedestrians hit and killed on what has been called the deadliest road in the state. But a traffic safety advocate tells Fox 5 she doesn't think it's enough to keep people safe.
The city of Henderson has a completely different approach to modernizing their stretch of Boulder Highway. This is a live look at the intersection of Boulder and Major. Construction on the reimagined Boulder Highway project began within the city of Henderson back in August of 2024 and now they have reached a new milestone that they say will save lives.
Boulder Highway has had more fatalities on it than any other road in the state of Nevada. It's wide, it's fast, it's dark. 400 new streetlights are now in operation on Boulder Highway within the city of Henderson. Drivers have long complained it's hard to see pedestrians at night who cross the road at random leading to deadly crashes. In 2015, 11 pedestrians died on Boulder Highway.
Yeah, it's hard to drive drive through in the night because you know, you can't see nothing. It's so pitch dark out here. Since 2017, the city of Henderson has been strategizing how to make Boulder Highway safer for all roadway users. The city of Henderson says all of the new lights will bring immediate safety improvements to one of the Nevada's most dangerous roadways on this 7.5 mile stretch within the city.
Protecting not only pedestrians but drivers and bicyclists, anyone who uses the road at night. Cones still line the roadway as Henderson reimagines Boulder Highway with new bus lanes and a lower speed limit. The project is now well past its halfway point and is scheduled to be completed in August 2027.
And other work completed by the city of Henderson on their stretch of Boulder Highway to date includes 20,000 ft of new underground storm drains, upgraded traffic signals at 17 intersections, and concrete bus stops in the median.
The pedestrian safety advocate who spoke to Fox 5 says that she thinks what makes the biggest difference on Boulder Highway is the crosswalks. At crosswalks along the stretch with that chain-link fence in the middle of the road, Clark County officials say that they also plan to add lighting. Metro tells Fox 5 that there have been no fatalities around that new fencing since it has been added.
