When a heating system stays on continuously despite the room temperature being above the set point, the issue is often caused by a malfunctioning temperature sensor (such as a frost stat being misused as a room stat) or a stuck zone valve that fails to close, preventing the system from properly cycling off.

Heating Staying On On The Hottest Day Of The YearAdded:
2002 >> 2002 I mean that shower's 24 years old that that two ports energizing still be >> so is that one there two heating sacks where are they getting power from that's why the heating stay on all the time hot water one's gone off the two heating sacks are on might stop again welcome back to the channel hopefully everybody's doing okay little bit of a jobing around running day today um Yesterday we didn't get around too many jobs. We only got three done. Each every job was just a pig really. It's just one of them days, you know, plumbing, you never quite know how things how long things are going to take in plumbing.
Um, but yeah, we got a little bit of a catching up to do today, but nobody's really chasing me, which is good. Um, we've got a I've got a few jobs I could do getting to. We got an oil boiler that needs pulling through. I think they've had a new tank installed. It's on a big commercial premises. I've pulled it through before and it was a little bit of a pain, so I don't know why the people who've installed the tank haven't done it, but we'll go and have a look at that. We've got a couple of leaks we could do. We get into um I've got to get to a job sometime this week. I've got to get primary pipe work in for a new underlo heating system in. It's like a they've got a swimming pool and they had like a bit of a shower block built. Um so I don't know if I'll be able to film that job or not or it's not it's not a huge area. It's only like one shower and then like a changing room or something or a kitchen or something. I'm not too sure what it is. So there's only like two zones well one zone of under floor heat and two loops. So, I need to get the primary pipe work in for that before they put the roof on. Um, because it'll be a lot easier. So, I've got that to get to at some point this week. So, yeah, there's a few bits we can drop on.
Um, I'll try and get some shots of the jobs that I do. And yeah, we'll catch you all on the first one. Called out to the shower. Apparently, it's just not getting hot. So, I mean, it's a pretty old Red Rig electronic.
I've got I've brought a new shower with me. It's not going to cover on the towels, I don't think. We might just be able to pop some silicon in >> Philips.
>> I don't think I've ever seen a Red Wing Select. You The new Select They do make the electronic now, but they're square, aren't they? Rectangle. They're completely different. We've done a few, haven't we?
>> Yeah. Narrow and wider.
>> They're narrower and wider now. So >> wider and short, though. Short.
>> Yeah.
>> Cable comes in underneath on this one.
The only thing it's not going to cover is the one at the top. Is it?
>> Yeah. We just have to silicon that hole, I think.
I mean, there might be a shower on the market you can get, but turn the water off.
>> Yeah, I ain't turn the water off yet.
I'm being reckless.
Surprised they never got water in the arm there. I've got some chrome pipe in the van.
Is there a date on it? It's an old one.
That is it.
>> 2002.
>> 2002. I mean that shower's 24 years old.
I think it's going to have to go something like that. Are you done?
>> Y try and cover the cable entry at the bottom. And then we just have to seal that that hole there. There's not a lot we're going to do about that.
Where's Which way is that cable going?
Is that cable going straight up?
>> You'd have thought they'd hit that, wouldn't you? If it was going straight up.
>> It's going up. There's um there's cap in there. It must be pretty close to it.
You never know if they did this.
>> Yeah, I know. We're just going to have to be careful when we fix the shower, though. That's all I'm thinking.
I'll be safe fixing there. And that one's in line with the other one. But I'm sure that cable must run up here somewhere.
It's got capping on it anyway. So I should feel it if it's I might do that from an angle. Well, it probably had they probably have gone straight through that then and missed the cable. That there is capping 100%.
You can feel it when you hit it. When you drill it, it's not there, but it is there. Man, they must have been so lucky when they hit that then when they drilled that one. Unless they have hit the cable.
I reckon they're on the edge of the cable there.
I don't know. I can't tell. That's definitely capping.
Just shine your light on that, Aiden.
>> Yeah, it's capping. Shiny. It's capping.
>> It must have missed the cable.
I'm going to drill it at an angle like that.
>> My god.
>> So, that's all working. Everything's getting nice and hot.
Easy one sorted. Just had to put a little bit of silicon in that hole.
>> Gearboxes don't really me things fell off. Look, that's what they say about Ford, didn't it? Fix your repair daily.
>> Fix your repair daily.
>> This van's been all right. Actually, I had that issue with the um what was it?
One of the thingies was under warranty anyway. Oh, it's off again.
Old van. It means I need a new van now.
Um, >> there's a new van at a [ __ ] Ford.
>> There's a new van at Ford that we bought and paid for. Uh, that one's all sorted.
Um, what we doing next? I tell you what, they got dead lucky when they fixed that shower last time because they must have been pretty close to that cable.
>> Very close.
>> Very close. But anyway, we managed to get a good fixing. We are going to a heating stay on all the time call now at a commercial building. I think this is the building that we changed the pump on before Christmas. We put a big not it was actually that big a port. It was a 2580 from memory and because they had no heating but there's three or four zones in here so it could well just be a zone valve sticking um all the time. I think they're all Honeywell zone valves from memory. So we go and have a look at that. Um and then we've got a job where we went the other day and somebody kic kicked the hell out of a radiator, didn't they? It's got a rad cover on.
Destroyed the rad cover.
>> Destroyed the house.
>> Everything's destroyed and now they want the radiator taken off. But I don't I'll not be able to film that one. Um, we've also got a smell to go and look at and a toilet as well. Got a few jobs to place.
I'm just trying to work our way around in some sort of chronological order so we're not doing too many miles. And yeah, we go and have a look at this.
Heating staying on all the time call.
So, it comes on at 7:20°.
So, it goes off at 8:00 at 10° and then there's nothing else set then. It's cuz it's 23° inside the room.
>> Is it?
It must be. I don't know.
Yeah. But is it is it where is that stat though that it's calling? There's upstairs circuit as well in there. The upstairs is calling still.
>> Yeah, that must be down.
>> That that must be the They are still calling to be fair. So it is running. It is running too long because if the room's at 23.1 >> that's hot water.
>> Yeah, that is hot water.
They shouldn't be on.
>> Where is the stat? I have no idea where the stat is because the actual the actual temperature is 23.1 in the room and it's only set to 20 and at 20° it should be on. It should go off at 20.
So what's keeping it on then? What would keep it on then? The prostat could keep it on.
>> I've just turned both those off >> inside the building. I'm not going to show you inside. Um but there's the cost to stat which is non-temperable. So you can't adjust the temperature on it. And there's two other room stats which I think must be obsolete on an old system.
And there's a Costa um frost thermostat.
So it's picking up the temperature when it needs to come on at night. So that's the 10 degree one. And then the ambient room temperature showing 23.1. So this shouldn't be on now. And it's probably been running all night and using loads of gas. Um so it's either going to be the controller or it could even be the two port, one of the two ports keeping it on, putting the switch light back onto the boiler and just making it run all the time. Put this on idle.
But I think if I just scroll through all the way through on this, it should go on to idle. Am I I'm on the wrong setting one of these.
>> Oh, you're going through the events.
That's all the problem.
>> Sorry. I need to escape.
These are the world's most complicated controllers.
But here we go, people. No, I'm not I'm not on it.
Measurements and calc testing. This is the next one. Should flick it off. Then why did There you go.
Put it in idle. So that should shut all the two ports.
>> Shut.
>> Not shut.
>> Not shut.
>> It's that two port then.
>> That one's not shut either.
>> That's That one looks new though. I wonder if they wonder if somebody's changed that two port and wired it up wrong. So we need to test to see cuz that boiler still Oh, the boiler switch live gone off the boiler.
So the switch live demand is off on the boiler now.
But that that two ports energizing still which it shouldn't be. So is that one there. Two heating sacks. Where are they getting power from?
That's why the heating staying on all the time. Hot water one's gone off. The two heating sacks are on. That's why the heating staying on all the time. I can't remember this being last.
>> No, I can't remember.
>> We changed this pump um because they had no heating down at the far end. They've actually got too much heating now. We changed this what 6 months ago. I can't remember.
>> He val these should not be energized and they are.
That's energized. It's loose.
Even though that's off on there.
>> Shouldn't be live, but it will be.
We've got >> it'll be 240 on brown. It will be It's not firing the boiler. Orange is the one that fires the boiler.
>> They're all linked together. Let's have a quick look.
>> Well, they're all in one way, though.
you down inside and see if them valves actually do shut. Back a second.
>> Yeah, you're right, mate. The boiler's gone off now. Pump's still running. It's probably on an overrun.
>> It's going to set a bit on over if you need them.
>> These valves aren't shutting.
>> They're not shutting.
Oh, water should be the only thing that's running now, but it's not. Let's bring that heating on. Let's put that back up to 20.
That's it. Nice shot.
Do you know what it was? So, inside I can't really show you yet, but there's the two anti-tamper stats. There's other stats, but I think they've been disconnected as I've already probably said, but there's a a room stat and a frost stat. Somebody put frost up to 20 inside, and that's why I think they probably thought that was a room stat.
Um, so them valves are shut now. So, we need to increase the temperature on that program and make sure the valves back open up. So, if we turn that room temperature up to 24, then valve should open.
Might just take a minute.
>> You got to set it cuz you got to go out, I think.
>> Oh, yeah. I think you should have to, should you? I think that should be it straight away.
It's not opening.
They are not opening now. No, they're not open.
It's only hot water that's on.
>> You need to come out of that.
>> I've done that though. I've done it and it didn't make any. It should do it straight away cuz now when you go on normal one, if you go on to press that on events and periods, normal one, it should be 25, which it is.
>> But it's still not coming on now.
>> Pumps on.
>> The pump's on cuz it's firing fault water.
If I turn that stat down, if I turn the cylinder stat down, it'll probably go off. Yeah, pump's gone off now. Oh, zone valve shut. Pump will go off in a minute. Has it got a bypass? It's got a bypass.
That zone valve is not shutting. Them zone valves on opening now.
Agent's just putting that frost back on 20 and it'll probably bring the heating back on. But I think it'll just run all the time.
They're literally everywhere. It's probably them. It's them two there.
They're on now. So, it is just I don't know what that ambient room temperature thing's doing then cuz it doesn't control it.
>> That thing's following.
>> Yeah, but it's not controlling anything, is it? It's only working off that top stat.
>> You don't control nothing. What's the other cable going into >> this one here? That >> That's Yeah, the top's that. Then you got your one underneath.
>> Yeah, that's your That's the That's just the sensor. It just goes back into that control unit, the Costa.
>> What's that? Oh, is that going to the cylinder?
>> Yeah. One goes to your hot water. Oh, no. That's just reading flow temperature on your boiler.
>> Okay.
>> It goes into that. That's flow temperature. And then the other one's reading ambient room temperature.
Even when we put that in test mode, mate, they stay on though, don't they? I don't think that cost you. I don't think it's working. Well, it ain't working, right? Is it?
>> No, >> cuz that that should shut. They should shut. They shouldn't be energized still.
This happens.
>> What?
>> I think they are using that as a frost.
So, if the temperature drops in in the room below 10°, it would come on. But because that ambient room temperature sensor is packed up, it's not reading ambient room temperature. Look, it's all charred.
Oh, Jesus Christ.
>> Because that ambient room temperature sensors packed up, they just been using that and that's why the zone valve is staying on all the time.
>> So, there's a new cable to it, isn't it?
>> Yeah, that's all charred. That is That's the temperature gone through.
>> Well, it doesn't look very good, does it?
>> How the hell has that happened? And somebody's used a tech. I think when they've had that secondary return pump change, somebody's melted that cable.
They've realized they've melted the cable. That is the frost stat. It's an anti-time for frost, but they've just turned it up to 20 and that's why that's why it's running all the time. I think that's exactly what's happened.
>> Bit of charge there, isn't it?
>> Yeah. So, that's why that's why it's not working. And that's why that Costco unit's not working. That's why it's not picking up ambient temperature.
>> Yeah, >> that's what's happened, mate. Like agents just said, you wouldn't have noticed it in the winter when we fitted that pump because the heating would have been cooling. So, you would have noticed it was running all the time. But that's exactly what they've done. And they've used that the frost they're using the frost as a room start now. And the Costco unit doesn't do anything. It just runs all the time until it reaches 20° on that frost and then it cuts off.
So what the ambient room temperature that's saying on there is 23. It's not actually 23.
So we're getting weird readings. That's what's happened. I think it's that cable there. And I've only just noticed it. I should have noticed it quicker, but it's one of them things. So we got there in the end with that one. Um, as I say, I probably didn't I don't know how well I've explained it, but two stats inside.
One's a frost stat, one's the optimizing like room stat, if that makes sense. And that the cable to that has been damaged at some point in the past. I don't know when that was damaged. Um, so what somebody done to get over that is they've just turned the frost to 20.
Well, a frost is not going to read accurately all the time. So that's why the heating's just been running all the time, I think. And it's a big room as well, ain't it, Aiden? Where the stat is.
>> So it's probably it probably never gets up to 20. That's why them zones valves zone valves always actuated and that's why it's been coming on at funny times.
So that Costco unit effectively is doing nothing. Um so we need to get a new new communication cable in between the two and then I'm sure that'll be fine. Um so next one is smelling the toilet. We're going to go and have a look at it.
>> That needs an air mitt. It's >> pulling that mate when that when that wash machine's on.
Want >> a trap of a uh >> Yeah.
Look, look, look, look away.
>> It's pulled it though.
All >> gone now. Is it that drain?
>> I didn't have an antivac on the van.
Well, it didn't look that hard. There was a builder's merch literally next door. So, Aiden's just disconnecting that. I'm going to put an antivac on.
And I thought rather than trying to root for my van, it was just quicker to go and get one, which is what I've done.
We are literally 1 minute away.
Antivac. All this does, it will stop that from siphoning and glugging.
Hopefully stop the smell.
So, it just lets a bit of air in there.
172 for petrol for that pump.
>> 172.
>> Yeah, for petrol.
>> Oh, that's expensive, isn't it?
>> That's got that job all sorted. Uh, we're on our way to take a radiator record now. I'm not going to film this one, but we've got a couple of other places we need to be after that. So, hopefully I'll get some more footage.
Let's go. Let's go. Let's go. Let's go.
We got some sugar.
>> Yeah.
>> Need to keep me sugar up. Don't want him dying. Can't afford him dying.
>> We all die. If you're going to die, make sure you don't die at work. There's too many people in here.
>> I'm going to die at work when you're like father.
>> Yeah, the other one's got air on. Yeah, these gloves are pathetic, by the way.
That'll probably fire that.
Maybe plenty of fuel there.
I mean, it may be a burner fault, but there you go. Told you it work. Told you it work. You didn't believe me, did you?
>> I did.
Might stop again. That >> Yeah, I told you. I told you that. Yep.
That's lockout. That is what I tell you.
They've had a new oil tank fitted and then the boiler stopped working.
So, that's good, isn't it?
It's just full of air in it.
We obviously didn't fancy bleeding this, but I threw.
I could get the sucker on this, you know. Don't know. Probably could.
Sucker's a bit broken, ain't it?
>> Yeah. Someone broke that.
>> Someone broke that.
>> Well, I say broke the hose.
He's going to have it.
>> Don't know how far it runs. Yes.
I need to get a new hose because the clear plastic one snapped.
But I b something together. Trouble is, it's a funny fitting onto the thing.
that there just in case.
>> Yeah, it's not. See, that's not half in.
It's building up.
>> Yeah, >> it is working. Why is everything of mine broken, destroyed, smashed?
>> I broke this.
>> Yeah, it might be leaking on there and on there cuz I haven't made that in have I burn loose as well.
Checking that expansion vessel's full.
Look at the angle. It's five.
>> That one's full as well.
At least that's got that working. I need to get a new fitting for that. That's not half inch and it's not 38. And they don't sell the hoses individually, so I'm going to have to find something that fits that.
I don't know. I did message them, but they didn't come back.
I don't really do Facebook, though. It's made by a company called uh Simply Oil Solutions, I think. And my hoses broke.
I don't I ain't got a Facebook profile.
>> That'll be vital.
>> All I need is the O's and a gauge. My gauge broke years ago to be fair. It used to be pressure gauge in there.
I snapped that off after about a year, it was it did give you a bit. Yeah. Got a proper step so you can get to it. Too bad. Look, bit close to the thing, but bit close to the boundary, but it's slipped out on there. And that pretty much concludes another episode.
Thank you so much for watching. I do need to get a communication cable sort of for that controller, but they do have heating. It's just going to stay on a long time. She said they'd had all the contractors out to look at that. They couldn't figure out what was wrong, but I think we're along the right lines with that. Um, so yeah, apart from that, everything went okay today, really. Um, so yeah, if you enjoyed this one, if you could hit the like button, that'd be greatly appreciated. If you didn't, hit the dislike button. Drop a comment below. And yeah, we'll catch you all next time.
