In criminal cases, defendants may negotiate to accept lesser charges in exchange for a guilty plea, resulting in reduced sentences compared to the original charges. In this case, Clay Sanchez was initially charged with first-degree murder for stabbing his neighbor Andrew Mazeda to death during a fight, but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter, receiving an 18-month prison sentence instead of a potentially longer term.
