He'd first synthesized it five years earlier from ergot, a toxic rye fungus. Initially shelved, Hofmann decided it deserved a second look. And during the process of resynthesis, he accidentally absorbed a tiny speck through his fingertips. Soon after, the world began to melt. He felt dizzy, restless, and then strangely euphoric.
