The report uses basic physics to dress up a routine atmospheric event as a looming existential threat. It is a classic example of infotainment that prioritizes sensational "city killer" narratives over nuanced scientific discussion.

Meteor Over Massachusetts Causes Explosion Reports, Sightings From Delaware to MontrealHinzugefügt:
An alarming sound near the Boston area causing brief panic this weekend.
>> And the US Geological Survey says it was a sonic boom caused by a meteor.
>> It's such an amazing idea that like there was this you know 3-ft size which is not very big space rock screaming in to the atmosphere at 75,000 miles an hour and then it blew up. Um and so you know it's not often that you get exploding space rocks uh sort of you know shaking shaking everybody's world a little bit. There's about 10 tons of space material that makes it down to earth either through this kind of uh explosion in the atmosphere or just dust grains. So when you go to your car and somebody puts wash me on it you know if you swipe your finger along that along your car there's probably some grains of interstellar material inter interplanetary material that fell you know just as recently as a couple days ago.
>> Wow. Saturday's explosive sound sent law enforcement scrambling until they learned it was a meteor.
There are no reports of anything striking the ground but experts say any debris likely landed in the ocean. NASA says the energy it released breakup is estimated to be equivalent to about 300 tons of TNT.
>> And while Professor of Astrophysics Adam Frank says uh says that a meteor this size is harmless he adds that when they start to get larger than 30-ft across that's when the real danger comes. Some meteors can get up to several miles wide. Astrophysicists call those city killers. Yikes.
