Weather forecasting involves analyzing atmospheric patterns to predict temperature and precipitation changes; in this case, a cold air mass from Canada was expected to bring unseasonably cool temperatures (mid-50s with wind chills in the 40s) to Rhode Island on Saturday, contrasting with the milder conditions expected on Sunday.

WPRI 12 Weather Forecast 5/28/25 Rain Fri Night/SaturdayAdded:
Now to your pinpoint forecast as we [music] get a live look from New Bedford. A little cooler today with some clouds filling in and we could see a few scattered showers popping up as the night goes on. Chief Meteorologist Tony Petrarca joins us. All in all, not a terrible day, Tony. It really depended on where you were as far as the showers go.
>> Yeah, Shannon, I mean, it was going back and forth between clouds and sunshine.
If you caught a shower, it was like 10 minutes, the sun came back out. So, that kind of a day. And overall, even right now, it's not too bad. Though, over the next hour or two, wouldn't rule out a passing shower, but overall, I think the the coverage has really diminished. So, for example, in Scituate, we're back to actually partly sunny skies. Looking at temperatures now in the mid-60s. Some locations a bit cooler, other spots a bit milder. We'll head over to Narragansett Town Beachway. Had a shower was about hour and a half ago. And now it's just kind of cloudy, some peaks of sun. Uh temperature at around 68°. Uh temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 60s, though still 72 in Providence as well as Westerly. Newport's at 68. New Bedford a lot cooler at 61. You had a downpour a little over an hour ago that has since come to an end and we're going back and forth between clouds and sunshine. And the trend for early this evening, any leftover showers will be winding down. Friday, the daylight hours not bad, looks pretty good. We're going to bring back some showers uh by Friday evening and Friday night. And still highlighting a very, very unusual Saturday. And it's the unusual that we don't want to see. It's it's cold. For late May, we're talking mid-50s. We're going to throw in some gusty wind and some periods of rain, especially morning into the early afternoon. I was wind chills, hard to believe we're talking about that, maybe in the 40s at times.
Clearly, Sunday is the more comfortable and brighter day. Partly sunny, we'll get temperatures back to where we should be for this time of year, which is generally low 70s. So, highs on Sunday 72, but look at Saturday. And again, not bad for your Friday afternoon, between about 70 and 75 with a mix of both clouds and sunshine. Notice the green blips are starting to diminish.
Those isolated showers. Though, over the next hour or two, stand it still can't rule out one more brief passing shower.
Again, if you catch one in your neighborhood, you know, all of 10 minutes and then it's gone. So, I had a weather disturbance pass through this afternoon. It originated up in southeastern Canada.
And interesting is that's where our weather systems are coming from this weekend. Meanwhile, high pressure building in for tonight and tomorrow.
But, yet another disturbance in the upper part of the atmosphere, it's way up here towards the Hudson Bay and southeastern Canada. That'll drop down Friday night and especially Saturday, it'll spawn an area of low pressure offshore throwing back rain and wind for Saturday. So, even though it's mild across most of the continental US, you get up into southeastern Canada where there's still a chill in the air and that much cooler air headed our way for one day, that would be on Saturday. Switch it over into the future, take you through the evening with clearing skies. Better part of the night is actually dry. 10:00 this evening, it's in the 60s and the mainly clear skies. Tomorrow morning, waking up to sunshine, nice start to the day.
Starts off in the 60s at 8:00 a.m. And then it trends towards more of a cloud sun mix in the afternoon, though trending towards extra clouds tomorrow evening. Here come the rain showers Friday evening, Friday night. Area of low pressure storm system off the coast of Cape Cod Saturday morning throwing back rain and wind right on through the early afternoon. This is 2:00. Doesn't really dry out on Saturday until around this time around Saturday evening, Saturday night. Windy and chilly for this time of year. And then back on track Saturday night, albeit cool, very cool, but at least it's clear. And we get some partly sunny skies in here on Sunday. Tomorrow morning, not bad with some sunshine, some extra clouds in the afternoon. Your showers arriving Friday evening, Friday night. But, Friday afternoon looks okay. 7-day forecast, we're going to skip right over Saturday. That is not a comfortable day at all. Looking at the rain and wind and unseasonably cool weather. Looking good for Sunday, partly sunny, dry, milder with a temperature around 72. So, clearly a 50/50 weekend.
>> who wants to be comfortable on a Saturday anyways?
>> It's housework on Saturday.
>> Overrated.
>> Yeah, exactly. All right, Tony, thank you. More coverage
