Rhaka’s analysis sharply exposes how indie animation often trades narrative substance for viral controversy and aesthetic pandering. It is a sobering reminder that a clever premise cannot save a project from the pitfalls of rushed execution and structural incoherence.

Gameoverse is "Goonerbait"Added:
Wow, so it looks like Glitch is in a little bit of a pickle. So yeah, a lot of the discourse surrounding the new animated pilot by Glitch Productions, Game A Verse, has been mixed to say the least. It ranges from complete praise of saying, "Hey, this is Glitch's best production ever. This just might be their magnum opus. They can't make anything better than this. Please [ __ ] me, Glitch." To others saying, "Oh my god, this is so misogynistic. This is the worst thing they've ever produced in their entire [ __ ] life. I hate Glitch with all my life. Indie shows are going downhill, man. I can't I can't believe this. This is the worst thing I've ever seen in my [ __ ] life. Kill me now."
Woah, calm down, Jamal. Don't pull out the nine.
>> [laughter] >> And as you know with the internet, there can never be an in-between. There can never be a middle ground. You're either on one side or the other. And if you don't pick a side right now, we'll come to your house and we'll raid it and then we'll we'll beat you up and then they'll eat your ass and then you'll probably enjoy it and and wow, this intro is going absolutely nowhere, isn't it?
Let's get into it, guys. All right, so first things first, let's talk about the pilot as a whole. Because overall, the concept is genius. I love the idea that the heroes need to lose while the villains of the show are actually trying to help the heroes win, which is a great inversion of normal storytelling. That along with the unique setup, the room for conflict, the plethora of scenarios they can have where they visit vastly different worlds based on different genres of games, there's just an endless number of creative storytelling potential that they have here. Now, in comparison to other Glitch projects where the world building is more tightly knit, this feels vast. This feels more atmospheric. This feels big, different from anything we've seen from Glitch before. And that goes beyond just the visual aspect, because it seems like they've added more star power, which has sparked controversy, and we'll get into that later. Aside from that, though, let's get into this amazing villain they got here, bro. The antagonist of this show, or rather antagonists, they are all uniquely terrifying in their own way. We have one guy where he's literally just a folded up piece of origami paper, and we have a woman who's definitely going to have some fan art in the future. And all in all, the henchmen are all giving OK KO, but in the best possible way. In the best possible way. Now, while these guys are more of the classical comedic comment relief that you'll expect from a show in this format, the main antagonist, terrifying as [ __ ] I mean that with pure sincerity. The way they captured his terrifying aura, whatever you want to call it, absolute perfection. I am terrified. If anything, I am watching this show mostly for him because I am loving what they're doing with his character so far, especially with how haunting that ending was, and the fact that the heroes did not win at the end, which is sort of the entire point of the show. That was so good. I love how disturbing it was, how you walk out of it with even more questions than you came in with. That is the sign of a good show. Now, let's get into the bad.
Well, it wasn't exactly bad, but there are issues, pacing issues. Now, with indie projects, they do usually cram a lot of things at you at once. I'm not faulting it for that alone. What I'm faulting it for is that they move too fast with stuff. Like, you blink and you miss it, and then all of a sudden the pacing slows down to a steep halt.
Overall, it just felt like they were trying to do too much with too little time, which is crazy to say in a pilot that's like 40 minutes long. They try to cram a bunch of lore, action, emotional beats, comedy, character intros, rules, stakes. I'm just over here like, "Bro, pick a struggle." And while I understand it's a pilot and you do have to cram in a lot of stuff sometimes to achieve proper world-building, I feel like you still could have achieved this with taking your time, bro. Like, you could have took a good chunk of this episode and just put it off into the next one. I even feel like at some point you could have combined two characters. I'm looking at you, Sharkboy and Barney. I also feel like this show keeps telling me to care instead of making me care.
And let me explain that. So, let's use Kit for example. First time seeing her, they use a abundant amount of trauma, lost friends, and we barely even know them as a person. Now, I'm not saying that you need to know them as a person in order to relate to their trauma, but it feels heavy-handed. It feels forced, especially considering this is literally the first instance of me ever seeing this character. I want to bond with her first before I see her complete backstory just shoved down my throat.
This feels like trauma fast food, if that makes sense to you. This seems like the Burger King of character development. And while we're still on Kit, she does feel weirdly inconsistent power-wise. Now, not to be one of those power scaler type of people, but my guy, she's a capable fighter in the intro, but then she seems suddenly helpless later. If she's so experienced, why is she making these rookie mistakes? I mean, like, the [ __ ] girl. Like, at one point they're just standing around and just just watching. I felt like they were part of the audience sitting right next to me. I mean, come on, bro. Get the [ __ ] in the mix. And aside from that, can we just talk about any animation as a whole? Can y'all please let go of the traumatized protagonist trope? I'm sorry, but like, there's just so many going on right now. And it's okay. It's okay to have traumatized characters. Nobody is saying that. But when you have a traumatized character and you literally start out your show with them being traumatized, that's how you know you kind of got a problem, bro.
That's how you know you got to got a addiction. Like, it's kind of the crack of indie animation right now. These [ __ ] can't get enough of it.
Also, quick note, why does Jschlatt sound like he recorded in a Best Buy display aisle? What the [ __ ] is going on with his voice, my guy? Like, I know they're trying to do like a little robotic mix or something, but for me it didn't work and apparently for a lot of people it just felt kind of off. Just wanted to mention that. Okay, so now let's talk about the controversy.
Yeah, people are mad that um I guess the characters look too sexy now. Yeah, so like throughout Twitter and you know Twitter, you know Twitter is the cesspool of hatred and lust. So, if you just look up Game Overs on Twitter and you scroll down, you'll see the baits more nonsensical than our recent political landscape. This might be shocking, but they do have somewhat of a point. Many people have been saying that they dress, particularly the women characters, which is essentially just two, in swimwear on the beach and it's misogynistic because they look too sexy.
Waiter, waiter, my steak is too buttery and juicy. Waiter. But, yeah, like, bro, I don't I don't get that. Um since when did the whole sex positivity movement get overthrown by this weird Puritan movement that's is somewhat giving FCC micro is basically gooners revealing themselves that they cannot handle that women are dressed in swimwear that is revealing in any sort of way. What What are we talking about here, guys? And it seems even more misogynistic to focus on that. I don't I don't get it. I don't get it. These guys are kind of weird, buddy. Now, the only critique in this realm that made sense to me is the fact that the women bodies are basically the the even though there's like two humanoid women characters, so it's not like we have a Hazbin Hotel level issue where it's basically the same body syndrome they have for every single character.
But other than that, I don't see why people are mad. The other issue, which is actually an issue that deserves some criticism, is the fact that they have J Slatt. Now, I never really grew up with J Slatt because like he just wasn't my cup of tea. I just never grew up with the boy. But after seeing a bunch of clips of him saying not the best stuff about black people, Am I still live, bro?
Am I still live, bro?
>> [music] >> Am I still live, bro?
Am I still live, bro?
I can see why some people are sort of iffy on him being involved in Glitch Productions, especially considering what they're going through right now with their recent controversies with various different actors and actresses spouting off racist remarks. That's [ __ ] angel.
I'll take the blunt of it for you, deary. Dear, do you think I know the answer to this one?
>> [music] >> Notice me, senpai. Hey, Aaron. Sure, [ __ ] We notice you.
So they knew they did wrong, and they decided to ignore it, didn't give a [ __ ] and only apologized 7 years later when someone revealed all this [ __ ] This type of racism is very covert, and it's one of those condescending like, oh, you can't get mad because I'm not actually saying the M word. I'm not actually saying the slurs. I'm just calling you a [ __ ] >> [laughter] >> So I can understand that controversy, to say the least. But overall, it hasn't really hindered my ability to enjoy this piece of media. I don't know exactly if I am that interested to really continue watching past this episode, but I am still intrigued. So I guess that's one thing. But I want to hear y'all's opinions. Do you think Gamerverse is bad, horrible, or do controversies really get into you? Let me know in the comments. I want to know how y'all feel about this. And until the next time, I don't have an outro. Bye.
I've been sitting here waiting on you.
