This film explores how individuals who have experienced profound trauma, such as Holocaust survivors, can simultaneously harbor deep-seated hatred and possess the capacity for compassion and forgiveness. The narrative demonstrates that personal history and cultural conditioning shape one's worldview, but that human beings retain the ability to choose empathy over vengeance, even when faced with those who have caused them suffering. The story illustrates that understanding the psychological roots of violence is essential for breaking cycles of hatred and achieving reconciliation.

>> Madam, I must insist this is about the terrorist attack.

It's just that everything's such a mess, you know.

>> Oh. Um, no. No, I've never seen him.
>> What are you doing? Aren't you supposed to have a search warrant to do this?
>> You said you wanted to help, Mrs. Litman.

I was making myself some coffee. Would you like some?
>> Thanks, but no.
Let's go.
If you do see anything suspicious, anything at all, please call this number. Let me advise you not to open your door to any strangers.
>> Have a good day, Mrs. Lipman.
>> [sighs] >> They've gone. You can come out now.
When I was 8 years old, I was playing in the street with my friends.
It was just after I'd eaten at home.
I remember my mother telling my baby sister, Lena, not to rub her eyes with her hands.
They were itchy.
They won't get [music] better if you keep touching them, she said.
My mother smiled.
When I was outside with my friends, the Israeli tanks came.
It was not the first time.
We were used to tanks in our village.
We were used to funerals in our village.
The men on our roof started firing at the tanks.
Our house and shop were completely destroyed.
It happened so quickly.
Everything was gone.
My mother, my father, my baby sister, Lena, all dead.
She was only 5 years old.
She used to wear a small gold crescent.
I keep it with me.
factory between Where will you go?
I don't know.
I have friends in Sydney.
>> Well, I know about your friends.
>> No, university friends.
Is that you?
>> We met before the war.
We married afterwards.
Oh, it was a miracle we both survived.
I was so young when I met him.
It was 1939.
And I looked at him and I saw that he had dirty fingernails and the heels were walked off his shoes.
And when he talked, he looked down. Now, my father had always said, "Don't bring anybody home who has dirty hands and can't look you with the eye and has untidy shoes." And I thought I thought, "Well, this is going to be a very difficult meeting."
He was a nicel looking boy and a wonderful dancer. Oh, we would dance and dance. We'd put on my parents' records. France Esling and the dance orchestra and we loved the walls.
And then, well, the Nazis came and they, you know, they started rounding people up and they separated the men from the women and the children. And I thought I thought I'd never see him again.
It was a miracle.
It was a miracle. We both survived.
Yeah.
I saw a little girl, 5 years old, maybe six.
She looked at me.
I couldn't do it.
I could not move.
She was like my sister.
My friend Yousef walked in, turned, and looked back at me.
He knew I was not going to do it.
I was hit by flying metal.
I ran away like a dog.
No one has died by your hand and God knows that.
The reason why you could not do it has nothing to do with your sister.
It's because of what's in here deep inside you.
And you should not feel ashamed.
There's no honor in killing people.
This was taken on the boat the day we left [music] Europe, 5th of June, 1952.
Now he was 2 and a half.
He was running around trying to pull the labels off people's luggage. Oh, what a boy.
And the photographer said, "You are taking that boy to the land of his forefathers.
Oh, we were [music] so happy."
And then when he died, [music] I I had to leave Israel. So we came here with Sophie.
You know, I lived in this place with my husband for many years.
And then one day I came home.
I thought he was sleeping.
He looked so peaceful.
And I took his hand and it was cold.
The fingernails were still dirty.
>> [singing] >> I died and more.
[singing] Moonlight and I Be careful.
Hello.
>> May I speak to Sadik, please?
>> I would like to speak to Sadik. Mrs. Lipman.
Do not answer it again.
They are coming to kill me.
Heat. Heat.
[music] >> [music] >> I have one on Quantis flight QF430 departs Melbourne 12 p.m. arrives Sydney 120.
>> Good. How much? I am paying cash.
>> And name of person traveling? It's one P2 NS.
>> No, no, no. Two P's, two N's. Lipman, >> of course. And your first name again, Mrs. Lipman.
>> A R I Ari Lipman is for my son.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Are you there, Mrs. Lipman?
This is ripping.
[music] [music] >> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Mr. Nathan, [clears throat] what are you doing in my home?
>> Mrs. Litman, I'm so glad. I was worried about you. So Sophie >> Sophie? What? My Sophie? What are you talking about?
>> She called me. She was worried. She tried to phone.
>> Nathan, Sophie treats me like a child. I would thank you not to do the same. Now, could I have my key back, please?
>> Mr. Nathan, do you mind if I have some privacy?
Okay.
What would you have done if [music] he'd found you?
Jerro number 24.
>> No, no. 24 [music] >> one.
>> Ilip man.
>> Ready now?
>> Yes. [music] Ready now.
You'll have to hurry.
>> [music] [music] >> 1000ish height. I [singing] >> [singing] [music] [singing] >> The hide there [music] [music] and moon.
Heat. Heat. [music] [music] You >> [music] >> You'll have to go.
You'll miss the plane.
>> What will you do when Jamal comes?
>> Oh, I will say you are gone.
Now you have everything. Now just go.
No, wait.
Go.
God with you.
>> Ya.
You have no luck, sir.
>> Harry, your book.
>> Target down. [sighs] Oh, get away from him. Get away.
Oh [screaming] no.
Oh no.
Oh, no.
[music] >> [music] >> In breaking news, the second of the terrorists responsible for the bombing of the Balaclava Synagogue [music] was shot dead today by members of the special operations group. The man had been holding an elderly member of the Jewish community hostage for the past 2 days.
Heat. Heat.
