The video brilliantly demonstrates that microtonality is a practical tool for enriching pop structures rather than just an academic curiosity. It successfully bridges the gap between avant-garde theory and accessible musical innovation.

Is Angine de Poitrine “weird music?” Let’s ask the “weird music” guy...Added:
It's time to finally talk about this band and Jean-Pierre Catrine.
I cannot tell you how many people have asked me to make a video.
More than any other band I've ever featured on the channel, this band has captivated people's attention like no other.
I think they're amazing.
And people keep saying to me, "When are you going to make a video about it? What are you going to say about it? I'd love to hear your take on it."
And I actually haven't done that kind of on purpose.
Normally, I try to support bands, shine a light on what they're doing because nobody else is.
And in this case, everyone else is.
And my inclination as the weird music guy is well, if everyone else is doing it, you know, when they zig, I zag.
But, this music does need to be featured on Make Weird Music. And I'm super glad for their success. I love everything they're doing.
But, I also have some opinions that I want to share. And people have asked me for these opinions, so here they go.
When I listen to the music itself, I just think, "This is cool."
It's head bobbing.
It's great tempo.
It's cool riffs.
But, it's not that weird.
>> [laughter] >> The music itself is just not that out there. There's not much I can point to where I would go, "Yeah, that's weird."
This is not a criticism.
It's just kind of like Queens of the Stone Age with more notes and less vocals.
It's kind of like if Queens of the Stone Age and Foo Fighters got together with Primus and made some music.
That's awesome. Who wouldn't want that, right?
But, if you just hear the music, you would never guess, "Okay, these guys have these crazy paper mache masks on.
They're looping in real time. They're wearing these polka dot outfits." You know, the whole thing.
When I just think of the music, it's fun.
But, it's not that weird.
>> [laughter] >> But, when I watch the video, it's like, "Wow, this is the whole package." Which makes me think of the the next question that people ask me all the time, "Why do you think this band is so popular?
Can you believe this?"
And I think it's kind of like Rush and Primus and you know, these are bands that do all of the right things, that check all the boxes without ever being problematic, ever being offensive, ever crossing a line.
And that's great. We need more of that because music pop music in general needs help.
>> [laughter] >> But, I would definitely classify this as like instrumental jam band almost pop music in the same way that like Primus' Pork Soda or Tales from the Punch Bowl are pop music.
It's got poppy structure. You want to dance to it. You want to stand in the club and drink a beer, hold a beer, and just jam out with them. And that's awesome.
But, is it weird music? I really just >> [laughter] >> I don't know. I keep coming back to that. I maybe repeating myself. I just don't think it's that weird. I love it, and it's not that weird. I love lots of not weird music. Make Weird Music is just kind of a hobby for me, and I don't listen to strange music all day long. Um but, given the choice of listening to this over some other microtonal music that gets submitted, I'm going to go with this, of course.
They're doing 24 EDO, 24 equal divisions of the octave.
And so, it's basically like a normal guitar and bass neck with some quarter tones in there, which is very bluesy.
And I love how they use it. They've made this microtonality approachable to a lot of people.
Like I said, they're not they're not crossing any lines. When I hear, let's say, Brendan Burns uh or Levi I can't remember his name.
There's a lot of like great microtonal music that kind of has that woozy, nauseous effect. That's not this.
Yes, it's microtonal, but it's not 27 EDO or 31 or any of these odd numbers.
It's pretty normal.
I think any guitarist could pick up this this instrument and get it after a little practice.
They're not doing a lot of odd times.
There is some songs in seven, most in four or six.
And that's not a criticism. I love it.
But, are they really, you know, branching out musically?
Not not a whole lot.
And that's great cuz people love it. I think they're doing everything right.
Even to the extent that when I searched for the band before making this video, on Google, they even show the polka dots on the search page.
I have never seen this before. That is the sort of effect this band has had on the world.
And I am so happy for them that they are selling out shows in minutes.
I think their music's fun to listen to, and it's cool.
But, it's just normal, you know, head bobbing jam band loop based pop music to me.
And that's not a bad thing. I think it's wonderful. I wish them nothing but the best. The link it's right there.
jean-pierre catrine.bandcamp.com.
Go support them. Go to see their shows if you can get a ticket.
They're awesome.
And guys, if you're watching, I would love to have you on the channel. I don't care if it's silly, goofy, whatever.
Uh I know that we are a good outlet for you.
>> [laughter] >> I'm sure Rick Beato is after you guys or whatever, and I know I'm not that popular, but man, I would love to talk to you guys and uh feature something on the channel. And if you have ideas, viewers, you know, leave a comment on something I could do with them or about them. Uh because I did hear back from their manager, and they're just busy.
But, that there is still maybe opportunity in the future. They have two uh two albums on Bandcamp. You should check them out.
Volume 1 and Volume 2.
Both are great.
Go check them out. Uh how do you get to the Yeah, there they are.
Volume 1, Volume 2. I thought Sherpa was just one track.
Yeah, I think it is.
Um so, yeah.
I love so much about it. I hope you do, too. I'm glad they're getting super popular, getting millions and millions of views. That's awesome. Keep it up, guys.
Congratulations.
Go buy their music. Support them. Keep things going. It's awesome.
Just know, it's kind of like pop music.
And that's cool.
