The ego may initially accept this bargain to be chosen admired desired even inaccurately can feel safer than being truly known. But the psyche knows the difference. What they love may be your adaptation your pleasing self your silence [music] the mask you learned to wear so early that even you began to mistake it for your face. And so a strange grief emerges. You are held but untouched. This is one of the crueler illusions of human intimacy proximity without recognition. The unconscious often tolerates such arrangements because they resemble childhood.

That familiarity is not peace. It is repetition. To be unseen in conflict is painful. To be unseen in love is far more dangerous because it can persuade you that invisibility is intimacy. The shadow grows quiet in such relationships not because it is healed but because it has true love does not merely adore what is easy to understand.

It longs to be recognized, and if someone loves only the dream they have placed upon you, then you are not being loved. You are being imagined.
