When building a free-floating deck not attached to a house, cross bracing must be installed on tall posts to prevent swaying and buckling from wind and environmental forces. Additionally, when installing wet decking boards, using ratchet straps to pull boards tight before screwing them down prevents large gaps from forming as the wood dries and shrinks.

Deck day 7 | Two Older Women Build A Massive Free Floating Covered Porch | Mobile Home RemodelAdded:
Hey Jen.
Huh? Woah, we're halfway there.
And we are living on a prayer. And we're definitely living on a prayer always.
>> [music] >> Hey Jen.
Yeah. What are we doing today?
Working on the deck. The never-ending deck.
It gets bigger every day.
We should have all the boards put down today. Today is what? Day seven?
Yeah.
But it's only the third It'll be the third pretty much full day. Full day, yeah.
So our plan today is to put the deck boards on and brace these tall posts posts because we have storms coming next week.
Jen's going to be gone, so I'm going to be building stairs next week. So I can easily step up on here and then um when she gets back we'll put the the roof on.
That'll be a different video.
>> a little side trip.
All righty, let me put you on time lapse.
We'll get this baby done.
Let me get a chair to sit on. Are we recording?
Oh, no. I would never do that. Hey Jen, what are you doing?
>> [laughter] >> I'm about to put some uh bracing Cross bracing. Yeah, that.
After I get rid of these rocks.
>> [sighs and gasps] >> Just kneel on a couple of them.
>> Yeah.
>> [clears throat] >> You will be done with my help.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, I like it.
Ow, ow, ow.
Freaking rock.
I'm laughing, but I have to crawl under there afterwards and put lag screws on it. I just won't video that.
>> [laughter] >> Oh, oh, okay.
You've seen one fat lady do it, you've seen them all.
Oh, all right.
>> [laughter] >> Woohoo!
Now the reason why we're cross bracing it is because this is not attached to the house. It is a free floating deck.
That's right.
>> And it will help it from swaying buckling all that good stuff.
No feng shui here.
No.
I just saw another brace we could take down. Yes, you could.
It's break time. Yes, it is.
We'll be back.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> We're trying to get these boards in order.
So that that we can quickly lay down the decking. Now what were we doing before that?
See if you can see the gaps.
>> and they have gaps and we're using a ratchet strap to uh pull them in tight before we screw them down.
And we're not leaving any cracks because these are really wet boards and they're going to shrink up a lot.
>> up, so we're just trying to eliminate big wide catch gaps like that.
Yeah.
Okay, let me put you back on time lapse.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Hey Jen.
Huh? Woah, we're halfway there.
And we are living on a prayer. And we're definitely living on a prayer always.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] [music] >> Okay guys, it started raining. Wow, why are you guys so close?
Hold up.
Okay y'all, it started raining. So, I'm not going to keep the camera out here in the rain, but we're going to try and power through the sprinkles and on this soaking wet deck >> [laughter] >> to finish it, I guess. I'm crawling around in the wet, huh?
But, let me show you what we got done.
I think we have 1 2 3 4 We have four more rows to go maybe, four and a half.
Yeah, four and a half rows.
But, we have to start cutting soon. So, yeah.
Um I'm just going to turn the camera off and put it inside so I don't have [clears throat] to worry about it getting wet and I will bring you back when we're done or when it stops raining.
Come on.
Come on.
Uh-uh, Dilly, come.
What do you think?
No, Dilly, come.
What do you think, little girl?
Your observation deck?
Huh?
Is that your observation deck? Do you like it?
You can sit out here and bark at the deer.
Okay, go inside.
I think she approves.
So, we pretty much got rained out, but I will show you what we got done.
John has already left to go eat a much deserved dinner.
But, we got all the way to uh Let's see. Can I Can I zoom in?
Yeah, we got all the way to the very last row, which needs to be ripped down.
And my uh table saw is buried under other wood in the shop right now. So, John has already cut the boards to length, I think.
Anyhow, we're just going to take them over to her table saw tomorrow, rip them down to the width that we need, put those in there, and put some cross bracing up to these posts cuz we have storms coming.
And then not this next week, but the following week we'll work on putting the roof on.
But, this is just so awesome just to be able to walk out.
So, we'll see what we get done tomorrow.
Hopefully, it doesn't rain on us.
