Why Hedgehogs Are Hard for Predators to DefeatAjouté :
You're interrupting our courtship. Leave now.
>> Or what? You'll chase me in circles for 2 hours?
>> You should have stayed in your little patch of dirt, worm farmer.
>> Get him.
>> Stay low. Something's close.
>> I can smell it. Something small.
>> Gotcha.
>> What?
>> BIG ONE.
WE STALKED A worm farmer.
>> What's wrong with that? This is what happens when you don't belong to a tribe. You just eat whatever. I eat what I need. I don't need anyone to hunt it for me.
>> Hey, Cade, maybe we should just eat him instead.
>> Try it. See how many of these you pull out of your mouth afterward.
>> Not worth the trouble, my friend.
>> Whatever. Enjoy the worms pin cushion.
>> My name is Edmund and they underestimate me for eating worms, but I cover six kilometers of territory every single night barefoot alone in total darkness while simultaneously doing my grocery shopping. If you ask me, that is some mad stamina for someone who ONLY EATS BUGS.
>> WOW.
>> I work at night because I have a different opinion of darkness. It's not a limitation. It is a preference. My hearing picks up individual footsteps through the soil and my nose reads the night air. My eyes are barely being consulted at this point and honestly they're all right with it.
>> H >> you're impossible. You know that.
>> Aw, you're watching a happy couple.
That's genuinely sad.
>> What's the matter, worm farmer? Lonely?
You'll be forever alone. You can't hold anyone without hurting them with your spines. You don't know what you're talking about.
Hedgehogs are solitary by nature. We do not have anyone waiting at home when the night's foraging is done. Every living thing in this forest has a family to return to. But I only have a patch of dirt and a foraging sack. It is simply what I am, and I have made my peace with it. But some days I have watched a couple laugh together in a clearing while someone pointed at me and called it sad. A >> just me in the dark every night. Maybe they're right. Maybe this is just what my life is. No, there has to be someone out there. Someone who understands. I just have to find her.
She's beautiful. So, I calmly walk up to her and begin circling her slowly. She snorts, turns her back, and walks away.
I follow because this is hedgehog courtship, and it can last for hours. I knew that going in. She tests my patience by headbutting me directly in the snout, launching me back two full steps. I stand there for a moment, collect myself, and resume circling because I know that was not a rejection.
That was a question. Will you rush? Will you force it? Will you turn patience into pressure the moment something pushes back? I add sound. Low grunts and careful snuffles. Each one timed to the circling and pitched slightly different from the last. Okay, look. I understand the optics completely, but this is not unhinged behavior. This is a negotiation being conducted at a frequency the rest of this forest doesn't hear. She can understand every word of it. I assure you of that. An hour passes and her walking has slowed. She is no longer relocating. She is allowing the circle to continue. Which means one thing. She is considering. I have not broken pace.
Have not tried to close the distance before it was earned. Have not let patience slip into desperation. And it is working. She turns to face me fully for the first time. Stops walking. And we stand across from each other in the dark. Close enough that our breathing shares the same air. Every minute of it was not wasted time. This moment is what all of it built toward.
Well, well, looks like it's time for me to step in. Everyone, come out here right now.
>> This little worm farmer has been running circles around this poor female for hours.
>> I watched it. He didn't forage tonight for this, and she kept walking away.
>> You don't understand. Even if she said yes, what then? They going to hug with those things on their back.
>> Poor girl. You deserve better than spiny boy here.
>> You're interrupting our courtship. Leave now.
>> Or what? You'll chase me in circles for 2 hours?
>> You should have stayed in your little patch of dirt, worm farmer.
>> Get him.
>> Go ahead. Grab me.
HUH?
>> WHAT? I didn't know he could do that.
>> Ow. I need some milk.
>> I rubbed some snake venom on that earlier. I bet it stings. Oh, yeah. I'm immune to snake venom and most other venoms out there. Really? Pulling an Uno reverse card on predators foolish enough to attack me is one of my favorite things to do. I don't care how fast, how big they are, or even if they have venom. My defenses can nullify almost all of their advantages.
You've been trying to scare me since the first morning. Think carefully. Did it work?
>> Sorry, bro. We were just trying to act tough.
>> Forget them. Come to me, Edmmond. You waited through all of it. You never once forced it. We can actually flatten our spines when we've decided who is safe enough.
>> You can do that.
>> Only for the right one.
>> What? They can actually do that?
>> How does it feel to be wrong about everything?
This is your fault. All of it.
>> My fault. You called everyone out here just to embarrass ourselves.
>> But if you hadn't grabbed him, we wouldn't be embarrassed.
>> You said he was harmless. He showed us the spines on day one.
>> What do you want for dinner, honey?
