In avian courtship rituals, birds often exchange gifts as a way to establish romantic bonds, with shiny objects and food serving as significant tokens of affection; this behavior is part of a broader pattern where birds demonstrate their value and compatibility through material offerings, similar to how humans use gifts in romantic relationships.

When A Lonely Harpy Decides You're Her MateAdded:
Human.
I have a gift.
No, for you.
Yes, yes, no, you have to take it. No, no, no, you can't you don't get to say no you don't get to say no.
Because because you haven't even seen it yet and that's you have you can't say no before you've even seen it.
If you don't like it, you can regift it or you can lie and just put it in the garbage or you can or you can even tell me that it's just not your style. You can do some of those things but you haven't even seen it yet so you can't do any of those things yet because you haven't seen it yet. These are things that I know because I have watched humans and that is what they do. They lie to your face when they don't like a gift.
Or sometimes they tell the truth but they have to see the gift first so you have to see the gift first.
But no.
Yes, I know. I I know I know that too. I I I know I was here. I I know I was here last week. I was I was with me when I was here last week. I I know that. It's It just I don't What's your point?
This is Yes, but this is a different gift and this is a different visit with a different gift. They they are very different. They're not They're not all one gift. They are different so I can gift you again. Are you Are you Are you going to accept the gift or not?
All right. Very well. Well then.
I present you with a fish.
It is a very shiny fish.
I caught it myself this morning.
Just before just before dawn. I could see it because everything was dark and it was shiny.
Not very shiny because it was still pretty dark but it was catching the little light and I was able to and I grabbed it and now it was mine and so now I give it to you and now it is yours.
I have very good taste in fish you have to admit. It is very shiny and sparkly almost more so when it was um moving alive in the water, not so much now that it's just laying there. Um But >> [laughter] >> I picked this one for you because it was very shiny and it was the largest that I could also carry without it being a little awkward.
It It's It's not It's not big enough to be awkward. I I I flew just fine.
>> [gasps] >> Point is Point is I got up early. I caught a fish for you uh and now you have a fish because because because gifting food is also a significant romantic gesture. In your kind um getting together for dinner is is is a date. I I I have researched these things. I know these things and I have watched dates and people sometimes they bring wine. Um I can't catch wine in the river. They I sometimes pull up bottles because they are sometimes shiny and I get mistaken. But um that is neither here nor there. I don't have wine.
You mean I Well, I expect you to eat it. Uh well, cook it and then eat it and you know, I I I I understand that humans have to cook food. I've I I I've also seen that.
It is part of your date your dinner date rituals and so or sometimes you go out and have somebody else cook for you. If you would like to have someone else cook that for you >> [gasps] >> but [sighs] I I don't know anyone who could do that.
But I expect you to because you're human and you must know other humans, yes?
Yes, of course. [laughter] So so you cook it and and eat it. It's It's fish. Fish is good. Fish is good.
It's It's It's an excellent gift. It is both edible and shiny.
Okay, so um if you do not like fish, um I would not recommend regifting it unless you're going to do that very quickly because they do not taste good in a few days.
>> [laughter] >> Unfortunately, I've had to learn that the hard way. Anyway, um so >> [panting and sighs] >> You don't like the fish. That's okay.
That's all right. I have another shiny gift. I have another shiny gift. I I found a mirror.
It was It was not in the river. It was by the side of the river.
More specifically, it was in a campground by the side of the mirror. It was next to a tent with some other things like I believe brush and um Anyway, it's shiny and so I got that for you. And also, look, you can you can see things in it. You can see If I turn it to me, I can see me.
>> [laughter] >> You can turn it to you because you're very pretty to look at, too.
I I like the way it catches the light.
It's It's very It's It's nice. And and and it's got all the colors in it. It's got every color in it. I've tried. I've checked. I've I've pointed it at different things and um it it it it shows all the different colors. So, it is a very good mirror.
And I And so I I saw it. I thought of you.
That was That was the whole That was the whole point here. I I thought of you. Um I also thought I also thought you might like the spoon that I I got at the campground.
Well, it's not as shiny, but it is shiny.
And um I I may have I may have taken this for my myself.
>> [sighs] >> But you can have it if you like. It's It's It's yours if you like.
I I would happily give it to you.
>> [clears throat] >> I am Also, also, also, I know I know that humans like to have small furry companions.
So, I I I brought you a possum.
Don't worry. It It It only looks scary when it's got its mouth open like that.
It It's actually very friendly and tasty.
But you would like this for a pet.
That's right. So, um I brought you a pet, a possum pet, a pet possum.
Because because you are a human and humans like to keep small mammals often, sometimes reptiles, amphibians if they're very strange, and sometimes birds, which I cannot approve of. But I thought a possum would be good for you.
You could You could bond with it as humans do. You You could name it.
Um so, here you are, a possum.
May I recommend an alliterative name like like like penguin.
Penguins are are are very good partners.
It could be penguin.
Your Your partner possum.
Possum partner.
Or [clears throat] or peacock peacock. They're They're very pretty. Peacocks are very pretty.
Partridges are very sweet little birds.
You could You could You could name it partridge or parrot parrot. Parrots could be good talkers. I'm not always a good talker, but I do talk a lot. So, there is that. Um >> [clears throat] >> And um You don't You don't have You don't have You don't have to name it a a bird. A bird.
You can name something like Piper, which is admittedly also a bird, but it's also a a regular name for humans.
>> [sighs] >> What? Of course you can ask me anything.
Go ahead.
Um hm huh huh I I Why? Is this Is a very strange question.
Is it That's That's That's a very strange question, isn't it? I I I I would I would I would think that the answer is obvious.
Um that I I I decided that I would like to gift you things because because um Okay, so you see it's a bit of a long story. Um >> [clears throat] >> I my my my my my whole flock moved here two seasons ago and so you know we we do that. We are we're we're we're migratory. We're we're migratory creatures. You wouldn't you Not all not all. There are there are some that are like residential flocks in certain areas where it is temperate all the year long but for for for those of us who like to go up north who like to go up north we also like to come down south during during the winters and so we are a migratory species. And so that's that's how that works. That's how that works. And so so so if you if you if you a few seasons ago we moved here during the migratory season as I as we discussed and so I I stayed.
The hunting the hunting is good. The hunting is hunting here is wonderful.
As you can see there are plenty more possum and fish where those came from.
>> [laughter] [clears throat] >> Positively abundant.
So so so so you know there was there was good hunting so I stayed. I stayed.
>> [sighs] >> Well.
Oh oh oh how does that tie into the the yeah that's a that's a that's a reasonable question even though why was a a weird question cuz of course we you know people just want to give gifts to people that they like and they they when they're trying to court but I didn't say that. I don't mean like that but also that's one of the things they do. Um so so so I was >> Um, as we have discussed, and I stayed and I I just happened I just happened I just happened to have seen you that first that first season that we were here.
Um, and you were you were you were putting out those little those little um, seed cakes and filling the bird feeders. Um, you know, and and and and you were talking to the little birds. You know that that you know you know they can't understand you, right?
Okay, good. I just I thought maybe I I thought maybe you might have thought, but anyway, um, but you were talking to them anyway, which is even nicer. Um, >> [gasps] >> I I I I do believe that they like it. If if if it matters. So, I I watched I watched you I watched you talking to the birds.
Um, and I thought I thought I thought, okay, so that's somebody that's somebody who likes feathered friends. Um, and so I thought I I could be a feather I could be a feathered I I I am a feathered friend, right? I've been here with gifts so that we're and I am feathered. So, so, so, so we're friends, right?
It took me a while to introduce myself, I know that I and and and I know the gifts the gifts um, >> [clears throat] >> that this this they started they started before I actually um, got up the nerve to show myself. So, so, uh, the the flowers the flowers those that was me. The flowers on your porch that was me. And um, uh, so, yes, yes, of course. Um, so I I I I realize I realize I I'm not being the the most the most clear.
Uh, I I missed a that >> [gasps and sighs] >> So, I've been here for two seasons and um I had I I started nesting.
I I I I I I I took a while to introduce myself to be a friend, but also in that amount of time I started I started nesting.
Uh So, I've been looking around. There are a lot of nesting sites um that I that I considered and I I want to be I want to be clear about that. Um I I considered a lot of a lot of nesting places, but um um you know, I should also point out that like the gifts are yours, right? I'm I'm I'm not taking them back. The possum Piper the possum is yours. Like I'm not going to try and take any of these gifts back if if but also uh I I found a good nesting spot. I found a good I I think I found a good nesting spot and that that it is it is here.
Is is what I'm saying. It is right here.
It is It Well, not right here precisely. On the in your house is a good nesting spot.
Mhm. Mhm.
Mhm. You You keep it just the right temperature and you got the seed on hand and you You You You You line it with nice comfortable soft things. I have noticed that and also now you have all of these shiny things with the mirror and the spoon and the fish. And so, it's it's it's kind of perfect. It's kind of a perfect perfect thing. Um I've been I I've also been bringing you my feathers.
I've I've like been dropping feathers and you've been bringing them in. So, so, so I figured that that's what you're doing, right? You're You're building a nest for me.
And uh You >> [sighs and gasps] >> At least that's I mean, that's what it would mean if you were another harpy.
>> [laughter] >> Uh Did you know that that's that's what harpies do? It Mhm.
Yeah, like a a lot of a lot of a lot of um bird and bird-related It's a lot of avians uh do that in order to court court um >> [clears throat] >> to to make very special friends. Um So, I'm I'm sorry. I'm Sable, by the way. I I've been meaning to introduce myself. I keep forgetting. My name is My name is Sable.
Uh it's nice to officially meet you, and you would need to know that if we were to live together.
Okay. Okay. Um So, so you haven't said no yet. So, I should probably tell you about the In order to properly properly court and I I do want to do this properly. I have I have studied humans. I have studied humans' ways, and I have done all of the feeding and flowering and um you know, shiny things. So, uh and you you have been doing the the the nesting things. So, um Now, now, uh you just um you just have to bring me uh something um something shiny as well. And uh if I like it if I like it, that means that we're mates.
No pressure.
>> [laughter] >> But also, [clears throat] um you know, like >> [sighs and gasps] >> what whatever. I'll I'll like it.
I'll I'll like it. So, you know, so there's there's like no pressure. Just um just no pressure to get it. Just just But just go get it.
Go just go get something shiny, okay?
And and let's Yeah.
>> [gasps] >> Let's do this.
>> [laughter] [sighs] >> Yeah?
Oh.
That was That was That was That was easy. That was easier than I thought.
That was I didn't expect that to be so very easy. I didn't um um Why?
Are you one Are you one of Are you one of those very strange humans that are just like you I think it's called love bombing. I don't know. Mhm.
Oh.
Wait.
How long?
So, you've known this whole time.
I thought I was blending in with the background.
W- What What good What good is camouflaging feathers if they don't camouflage me?
Oh.
Yeah. [sighs] I suppose it wouldn't camouflage me in the suburbs, would it?
I I may have I may have missed that. I when I was uh trying to be sneaky and tiptoe and bring my feathers to your porch.
So, so you've you've known this the the whole the whole time the entire the the entire time.
Huh.
And you followed me back. That's kind of That's kind of weird, don't you think?
Yeah, no, I'm going to retract that because that's no weirder than what I've done. I get it. Yeah.
So, have Have Have you been Have you been like looking up harpies or something? Have you been studying harpies?
Really? An ornithologist.
Uh Well, that would explain the feathers.
And also the notebook that you carry with you.
Ah.
So, um Okay, well then.
Okay, in that case um >> [sighs and gasps] >> If if you've been watching me and I've been watching you, go get me something pretty and we'll do this.
Now. Now.
Like right now. Go ahead now.
Mhm.
Thank you.

I always appreciate your time and attention and also all the other things you do for me because oh my goodness, the the the comments and the shares and the likes and the hypes that helps so much when you know, like for a YouTuber especially especially in this genre it can be difficult to get put out there. So, you guys helping me is just huge and of course my patrons new patron ran from ran from sir. Thank you. Hi and nice to meet you. I hope I get to chat with you in the server in the web in the or on the website.

Of course I like birds. You know this about me but also those of you who guessed that was absolutely a magpie. That was absolutely a magpie. So, I I had so much fun with this character also though she's a little bit silly and less um Let I I when I was when I was trying to say which character went on to the exclusive patron this week, I ended up with the Eldridge because it just had so many more interesting possibilities that like obviously that I couldn't put on I couldn't put on YouTube but it just had so many more possibilities. It was so cool to explore that that that thought that that Anyway, uh if you would like to hear the the Patreon exclusive, it's over on Patreon linked below, and that does obviously help me continue to do this uh every week. But, in the meantime, what also would help me do this every week?
Let me know what other kinds of characters I when I was doing this, I loved the idea of a harpy, but I wasn't entirely certain how much there was a call for the harpies. So, what kind of characters I know that you guys always like you know, you like the giantess, you like the vampires, you like the werewo- you tell me what kind of characters you would like to see, and we will I'll see what I can come up with.
