The prophet who foretold the fall of a world power NahumAdded:
Nahum lives in the seventh century before Christ, when Assyria is still a strong and feared world empire. Nineveh, the capital city, seems impossible to defeat. Yet Nahum speaks about this very city. He gives his message mainly to Judah, which has lived under the threat and violence of Assyria. His words show that God does not simply watch without caring. Nineveh has power, riches, and soldiers, but no city stands above God’s justice. Nahum announces that the Lord will act and judge the proud oppressor. At the same time, his message is comfort for God’s people: evil does not have the last word. Being a prophet costs Nahum courage, because he speaks about the fall of a world power while it still seems strong. Today his message says: do not trust in human power, but in God, who does what is right and in the end brings restoration for those who hope in Him.
