The Supreme Court of India is set to pronounce its verdict on petitions challenging the Election Commission's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, determining whether the Commission has constitutional and statutory powers to carry out this revision exercise in its current form; the court had previously allowed the SIR process to continue while reserving its decision on the larger legal question, with the revision already completed in states like Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and West Bengal, and ongoing in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, and Rajasthan.

Supreme Court To Decide On Election Commission Voter Roll Revision #electioncommission #verdictAdded:
Some more breaking news coming in in a crucial judgement with major political and electoral implications. The Supreme Court will today pronounce its verdict on petitions challenging [music] the legality of the Election Commission's special intensive revision or the SIR of [music] electoral rolls. A bench headed by Chief Justice Suryakant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi will [music] decide whether the Election Commission has the constitutional and statutory powers to carry out the exercise in its present [music] form.
The court had earlier allowed the SIR process to continue while reserving [music] its decision on the larger legal question. The revision exercise has already been completed in states like Bihar, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and West Bengal and is now ongoing in Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and Rajasthan.
The petitions were filed by several political [music] leaders and activists including ADR, Yogendra Yadav, Mahua Moitra, Manoj Jha, K.C. Venugopal [music] and Supriya Sule.
During the hearings, the court had also directed the Election Commission to accept [music] Aadhaar as an additional identity document while clarifying that Aadhaar alone would not be a proof of citizenship. Now, today's verdict is expected to define the scope of the Election Commission's powers [music] in revising India's voter rolls ahead of the key elections.
My colleague Anisha is now joining us with more details on this. Anisha, tell us and help us understand what all can be expected in the court today. Will there be finally some clarity whether Election Commission has the power to carry out a special intensive revision or not?
Well, yes. I remember after 29 days of hearing this entire issue in detail about whether the SIR was legal or not, whether the Election Commission crossed the boundaries of its power, whether this is going to unduly affect voters, whether this is going this something that will perhaps place an undue burden on voters.
All of these questions had been raised.
In addition, questions about the documentation that had been put as the request as the reason for FIRs.
In addition, the question of urgency with which the Bihar FIR was done just before the election, whether the kind of timeline that was followed would affect voters.
All of those questions had been raised.
They had also raised the question of what kind of scrutiny was needed, whether the 2003 baseline FIR baseline was valid or not, but why the summary revision of 2025 was not taken into account.
