In simple terms, how far a yacht can go before it needs to refuel. As we'll see, it's a little more nuanced than that. Range is something quite unique to yaching. We don't really think about it when we get into our car because it's rare that we're too far from a gas station. But if you drive an electric car, you'll likely be much more aware of range because charging points are less frequent and you need to plan ahead. And that is of course much closer to how range works at sea because when you're out cruising on a yacht, you need to know how long you can be on the water before coming back to port to refuel.

[00:00:50]And it's worth noting, by the way, that refueling a yacht is far more timeintensive than a car. For larger yachts, especially in peak season, you often need to call ahead and book a slot. And take it from me, it's not something you want to leave to chance.

[00:01:07]You may need a specific birth, high-capacity fuel pumps, or even fuel delivered by a truck. And by the way, Tristan Mortlock of the Superyacht Captain Channel first came on my radar with an amazing video on how to fuel a superyacht. Now, that video got 3/4 of a million views, and it's such an interesting video. I'll put a link in the description below. As a general rule, speed is the enemy of range. The faster you go, the more fuel you burn.

[00:01:39]And that's why long range yachts tend to cruise at around 8 to 12 knots. So, let's say 15 to 22 km per hour or 9 to 14 miles per hour. Now, I know that may sound slow, but that efficiency is exactly what allows them to travel thousands of miles across the planets.

[00:02:00]Hole design plays a huge role in the range of the yacht as well. Full displacement holes are the clear winners when it comes to range because they move through the water, therefore requiring less fuel to get a big heavy yacht up onto the plane. And in fact, naval architects such as Vanosan have developed what they call a fast displacement hull form, which we'll get into in another video because it's super interesting topic. But in simple terms, it allows you to have good fuel efficiency and pretty good performance, too. Now, fuel capacity, basically how big your fuel tanks are, matters a lot.

[00:02:41]In fact, you might think it's the most important thing of all, but it's actually only part of the equation. You can increase the size of the fuel tank, but if the yacht's not efficient, that fuel is guzzled away quickly. The real balance is between fuel capacity, hull efficiency, and of course, engine optimization.

[00:04:25]Before we get into the largest yachts with the highest range, it's worth looking at pocket explorers because this is one of the fastest growing areas of the market. And in recent years, the demand for smaller capable explorer yachts has surged. I've honestly never had more people calling me and my colleagues asking me about smaller expedition ready superyachts. Shipyards that traditionally didn't focus on long range yachts have started to gain ground in this space. For example, yacht builders like San Lorenzo with its EXP range and Benetti with the Beyond series are good examples of that shift. At the same time, there are shipyards that have built their entire reputation around long range capability. I think Nord Haraven is probably one of the best known. The yachts are designed to cross oceans safely and efficiently. Often capable of ranges between 3,000 and 5,000 nautical miles, often even more on the newer models. And just to give you a bit of perspective on nautical miles, by the way, an Atlantic crossing is usually considered about 3,000 nautical miles or or sometimes a little bit more. Other specialists in this long range space include Canier Lam and New Marine, both of which produce highly capable oceangoing yachts. Two builders that we recently made vlogs about are Lea and Grand Banks. And while LeFay is probably on the larger end of what we would consider a pocket explorer, both of these builders really think about how to make yachts that go the distance. Now, it's worth saying that range is often used as a headline figure when marketing yachts, and it's an important metric if you're planning serious travel, but it can also be a little misleading if taken at face value. A yacht may technically have the range to reach places like Antarctica or the South Pacific, but as I said earlier, fuel is only one part of the equation. You also need to think about the other things that you need on a long distance trip, fresh water capacity, food storage, refrigeration, maintenance, servicing, spare parts, and redundancy of critical systems are equally important. You don't want to be cruising Antarctica when a fuel valve goes faulty. You can only imagine the nightmare that would be. Even things like waste management can become a limiting factor over very long distances. So, it's worth remembering that true long range capability is about the entire ecosystem on board, not just how much fuel you can carry.

[00:07:22]When you step up into the largest explorer yachts, that's where you start to see the most extreme range figures.

[00:07:30]Now, Katu and I were brainstorming before we started filming about which yachts we think have the most impressive range, and this is the list that we came up with. In fact, though, we're only able to find reliable range data for a few of these yachts because it's not information that always is given out by the builder. So these are the ones that we were able to find conclusive data on.

[00:07:56]Starting with the yacht that absolutely dominates. It's the 1980built Blur Denim. A yacht conversion which started life as a naval vessel and she has a maximum range of 20,000 nautical miles which is just incredible.

[00:08:16]You could leave Monaco, head up the fjords of Norway, cross the Atlantic and hit the Caribbean, then transit around South America's Cape Horn and up to Nicaragua and still have some fuel left over. That is next level. Another conversion that almost rivals Blood Nim is the Germanbuilt 88 meter explorer Arctic. And she has a range between 16,000 and 18,000 uh nautical miles, but some sources say she can also hit that 20,000 range in ideal conditions. Next up is Octopus with a range of 12,000 nautical miles. Another impressive figure, which if we put in real world terms, means she could easily cross the Pacific Ocean from Panama to Australia and still have plenty of fuel left over.

[00:09:13]Then we have a few yachts sitting around the 12,000 nautical mile range, such as Nansen Explorer, Enigma XK, Yen, and Force Blue. And again, all of those except Yin are conversions. So there's really something to be said for building on the bones of a commercial ship. Some true superyachts worth mentioning include Luna at 9 12,000 nautical miles.

[00:09:45]And finally, Andromeda with an 8 12,000 nautical mile range, which is easily enough to take you wherever you want to go. But as I said, when we talk about range, we're not just talking about a single number. We're really talking about a system. Endurance is just as critical, especially since you move into genuine expedition cruising. So rather than asking what's the maximum range, the more useful question is how long can this yacht operate independently and under what conditions? Personally, when I dream of exploring the world, I dream of doing it on a very small boat, to have the satisfaction of navigating the ocean and putting myself to the test a little.
