The project shows that a successful "simple life" requires sophisticated technical planning and the humility to fix structural mistakes. It is a masterclass in prioritizing long-term air quality and engineering integrity over quick aesthetic results.

We Have to Tear Out a Wall On Our Cabin Build..Ajouté :
What is going on everybody? Today is uh going to be a good day. I'm going to try to give you guys a good update of what has been going on and uh how everything's been going with the AC install and uh where we're at today. I'm going to just say it right now. I am thoroughly happy with these AC guys that installed everything. They have done an amazing job. However, they know just as much as I do down here in the basement was a little chaotic. All right. So, I'm going to take you guys through a little bit with it. Didn't really film a whole lot. I did film a little bit, but it was it was a lot. You guys basically do a lot of show and tell. So, get ready. Get some popcorn. Let's show you guys what's what.
Sorry to interrupt y'all's video, but I got to say this has been one of those simple things that actually makes a huge difference in my life. I know it sounds crazy, right? But for real, this is the Lys reusable vacuum mag safe phone mount, and it's made for the car, but I don't just use it in the car. I use it all over the house, all over the build.
You never know. I'm probably using it for some of the angles in this video that you're watching today. The thing that I love about it is that it actually stays put. There's no shaking, no falling off, and it comes off clean with no residue. They have a ton of different color styles and this one is the manual version, but they make an automatic one, too. I got both and they're both fantastic. If you want to check it out, it's linked down in the description below. I also pinned it to the top of the comment section and I show a lot more of it over on our side channel, Real Life with SLR. Shameless plug going in the top corner right there. You're going to want to grab one and you can get yours today. Again, the link is in the description and also pinned to the top of the comment section. But that's it. Let's get back to work.
>> All right, you guys. So, in here we've got one vent. All right. We got another vent over here on this side. Now, right here where the lights are or the fans are, I've got a chase that is like perfectly lined up with those side vents that are on the side gable end where we didn't, you know, side or anything else like that because I basically was planning on this situation and it worked out perfectly today. So, I'm going to try to bring you guys along a little bit with it, show you everything and all that fun stuff. But the first thing is is all this paper up here. And uh yeah, so this is like uh roofing roofing paper. Um but I needed to control my condensation situation that we had going on down here. Uh when we moved into the basement, we tried to put all the rockwool insulation all the way up to the floor itself. And because we didn't have the cabin up above, it was just literally the floor in the winter months. Uh some of y'all remember that.
All right. If you don't, go back and watch some. It was some interesting times. I'm not going to lie. Um we we had inches of ice up there. And we were living down here. There was there was a lot to it. Um that goes back to the white floor, you know, versus uh this normal looking floor for the Advantec, right? We put all was white because we had a rubber m uh membrane basically adhered to the the top of it because I needed to make it waterproof enough to where we can actually live down here in the process of building a lot of chaos. All right, you guys. In that meantime, I found out the condensation, you know, heat rises and uh that creates condensation where it's colder and everything else and it just, you know, it was it was raining from from the ceiling down and we were like, what in the world is going on that uh that shouldn't be happening and yeah, it it was it was a whole whole mess. Anyh who, I put this paper up to control that water vapor and everything else like that.
And I knew I needed to do something, but I didn't want to put up drywall or anything because we needed to rip down everything, which is what happened with this AC. All right, we literally ripped down all of this paper or a good chunk of it and a lot of that insulation, everything. I literally bagged up some insulation and put it in the horse trailer and was it was a mess of insulation and just paper everywhere and just Yeah, it's it's clean. All right, you can see where I cut a good line to where I can get in here. Now, it wasn't just in here. It was throughout the whole basement. All right, you guys. So, this whole this whole ceiling in the hallway I took out just because I was like, well, I want them to be able to access anything and everything that I want to. And here I've got a vent for our seller slash uh room for email and whatnot. And yeah, I had to rip down quite a bit because over here in this corner.
Yeah, there's something else up there on the roof that we had to tie down cuz you know, we have AC in the basement and the AC's upstairs. So, we had to get down here someway somehow and it sort of ended up bringing us somewhere in this area and I needed we needed to, you know, have access to it. So, all that stuff came out, you know, coming into the bathroom.
Sorry for the glare of the lights. We have another vent up in here. And I closed it all off again. Like I said, I I went around and I I moved and grooved and did all sorts of stuff. Got Ooh, that light is bright. We got a vent in the laundry room. And then, whoa, we got a chaos mess in my maintenance room. So, this is where the dehumidifier is going to go. Yes, I said that's where it's going to go. Uh they did not get to install that one that was on back order and uh I actually got call confirmation today that they're going to be coming out this week and actually installing it. So, I'm glad that I left that open.
That pipe goes all the way through. And you can see that chase basically.
And uh for those that you know remember when we were doing the wiring for the basement. Hey, I left enough room for them to be able to snake through and do what they needed to do and get all the way around. So that's amazing. I like that. I'm glad I did that. It came out pretty good. So yeah, this whole downstairs was a bomb, you guys.
Originally, we were thinking about putting the dehumidifier and the ERV or something right in this area.
didn't need it cuz we had access to those little holes like I said and uh I try to have some pre-thought planning too and you'll you'll see that a little bit coming up these stairs and you can see that box again. Okay, SO LET'S see here. Can you see through?
Oh, there we go. Hey, I don't know how I got it to brighten up a little bit, but you can see we've got the ducting going through and this is the chase that goes all the way through to the maintenance room where you can see some light back there. So, there's that. Okay, I still have to close in all those holes, but sort of waiting for the AC to completely be done. And then, of course, my plumbing.
I want to wait for that to be done. But now we're up in the cabin, which there's piping everywhere.
It is so beautiful. To be quite honest, I'm a I'm a little bit of a nerd when it comes down to like the beauty and simplicity of what this is.
Like, I mean, I guess it's it's not that simple, but all the boots and ducks are all connected.
Everybody gets AC in their rooms, which that's a must.
We've got big old fresh air makeup air.
I'm pretty sure is what that is. I mean, I want to say it is.
We've got big old air duct air duct everywhere, you guys.
All the bathrooms, they're in there, you know.
And then even in our mud room, our mudroom's going to have nice AC and whatnot, which is amazing. It's not going to be its own zone in there. It's just going to be, you know, connected to the house, whatever it is around the house or whatever. It's going to be in there as well. And uh I can turn off that vent or whatnot whenever if Mel wants to open up the windows in there or whatever it is, you know, but she'll have my wife will have options in there and we'll have nice AC and heat um in there as well. But this is uh this is the uh the crazy part, you guys. I got to get up here and show you guys more.
But there's the ERV. She's all hooked up.
Our air handler is on that uh on that box up there or on that staging floor up there.
But that thing that thing's awesome. I'm going to have to make myself a floor or walking area to be able to come up here and service all that stuff.
I don't know what a lot of this stuff is. I'm going to definitely have to get a demonstration and tell me exactly what's what, but I'm pretty sure that's the makeup air that's going to have a filter. And then there's another filter over there. And of course, all the units have filters inside of it as well. Those guys over there definitely know what they're doing. So, I'm super super happy that I was able to get such an amazing uh crew out here to be able to do what they needed to do. And uh yeah, it's this is going to be a game changer, you guys. I'm so excited to be able to get this thing going and done. Look at that.
Look at that big old pipe coming in and down.
We're going into the the pantry here.
And uh that is the air that's going down to the basement. So, we had to go down below and then be able to go through the floor trusses and everything. Now, in doing so, like I said, I for I foresee this happening. All right. All right, I changed something. This bathroom isn't going to be set up this way. It's got it's got to get flipped, which means I got to cut out this wall here and flip it.
I had a feeling.
I had a feeling. Okay. Now, sucks because they do have the thermostat switch here, but I'm just going to have to detach it. We'll move her on down over here. Okay. I'm hoping that I can unhook this guy and have it go onto the other end real easily. And I can take this wall apart and literally just go flip it.
Now, the reason why I'm saying that is because right here where the toilet is and right there where the shower drain would be, there's a big old duck right there.
Right in that way. It's literally a duck that size. All right. There's there is no way I'm going to be able to put any sort of pipe in there. All of the ducting that you see that they put in is solid ducting. It isn't flex. Not a single piece is flex. I literally watched them make every single one of these.
I was like, "Okay, I'm not getting any flex or anything." They're like, "I don't believe in flex. That's not something we like to mess with. Which means later on if you know I need to service the duct work and clean them out or anything, I can actually clean them out and not have uh to replace the whole ducting system itself and pull all this insul. They can stay exactly where they're at and they should be able to easily be serviced um throughout the whole life of the house. So, that is just like amazing and I'm so happy for.
And that brings me down to the next thing. A lot of you guys kept on getting on me about the uh the gable lens and why aren't you finishing it?
Well, I had to get 10in pipe, 8 in pipe. Like, there's some big old pipes that had to get through this floor system here. And uh I'll grab I'll grab a flashlight so you can see it a little bit better when uh when said comes to it. However, um I've already started closing up some holes. But as you guys can see right here, it's closed in. I have this thing completely closed off. Now I can get my furring strips in and I can finish off the siding. It's coming together. We're getting so close. All right. So, this is what I had in the hole. Okay.
You see I still have this one here. And it's mainly because that is where uh my pipings is basically. Okay. I've got some pipe over here. I've got some pipe over on this other side. So, I'm probably going to have to access this.
Now, this is also where that square chase is in my floor system. And I didn't just have it on one side of the the floor system. I had it on both sides of the floor system. So I already pulled this one out so they could access this side as well. And when I pulled it out and everything else like that, I had to cut it a little bit bigger just because their opening was, you know, a little bit bigger. So I was like, "Okay, well, let me just make it about 11 in and you guys should be able to shove whatever you need in there."
I was able to get all that done and situated and it was a lot of moving, grooving, and getting everything done and whatnot. Now, I still have some other vents. I have one uh vent pipe coming out on the side and I put it there mainly because I wanted it all the way up there.
And I'm at that point now to where I'm going to have to get that to be all the way up in the attic. and I'm going to have to start working on all of the piping. Now, the correct order of operations when you're doing something in the sense of like a house. So, you do the biggest piping first, which is the AC. Okay? So, the AC guys are pretty much done. They got the dehumidifier to put in like we were talking about, and uh they're going to be coming back later on this week and that's going to be installed. Now, they don't have any of like the wiring set up because I'm going to be wiring everything to the units and everything like that. And then they're going to hook everything up to their uh shut offs and all that fun stuff. But I need to get it from the panel over to that area so they can do their part. But also, they've got to be able to do that in a sense of the finishing to turn everything on. So, nothing is turned on.
Nothing's going or anything else like that because we still need to do the sophets. Okay. I need to get those sophets situated and done. As well as I need to put in the drywall. I do not want to uh run the AC at all until all the drywall is uh sanded, mudded, and done in. Um, I know me and Mel can probably get uh all that done in a pretty good, you know, at least hung, I would think, in a couple of days and then maybe started mudding and all that stuff in a another couple of days and then it'll probably be done in like a 3 week process.
Hopefully not, but that's probably what it's going to end up being. I'm just trying to be realistic there, you know, and I can't do any of that until all the electrical is done and all the plumbing is done.
So, I'm I'm sort of stuck at this point of like I got to get everything situated and done, but so plumbing is going to be the next thing that I'm going to end up doing. And uh I'm going to have to move this bathroom completely around and get it situated so I can do plumbing.
Cuz as you can see, I got all my tools in here and all that craziness. Um so now I'm going to have to move all this stuff, reorganize my house a little bit so that way I can uh continue working on what I need to do. So, yep, that's going to end up being uh being what I end up tackling next. I can box in that AC uh pipe coming down and I can move Mel's uh dedicated outlet over here, which I'm so happy that they were able to uh keep it so small and everything. But I can put that there and I can finish off everything right there. Mel won't lose a dedicated area and she's only going to be losing maybe, you know, a foot a foot of space if that. Um, so I'm really really happy that that was able to to fit there so tightly and so nicely and uh I'm going to be able to get some things uh moving and grooving. So, oh, this is a this is a bit nutty and a bit crazy to say the least that we were able to get this 10-in pipe all the way through and down. But it worked.
It worked. It's I'm so glad that they knew what the heck they were doing cuz I wouldn't I wouldn't know what the heck I'm doing at all in that sense. That would have took me forever to figure out. But I'm so happy that that stuff is situated, you guys. And like I said, they are going to be coming back and they're going to be working on that dehumidifier um later on uh this week itself. So, I'll try to get some uh footage for you guys on that. It's been such a chaotic mess every which way and such a chaotic uh one way or another pulling that Mel's been trying to do a lot of uh the back end and she does all the editing and all that other stuff and she's trying to get out as many videos as she can for you guys and she's trying to film all this stuff but at the same time there's certain things where she's like well this is tight like trying to get into certain spots up here and up there. It was so tight that it was like, oh my goodness, trying to not be in their way, you know, and uh we're paying these guys to do their job. And I'm not gonna try to make it any worse for them. You if that makes any sense. Um if you were paying somebody, you'd want them to be able to do their job and do it how they needed to, and you don't want to be the one to to distract them and make it to where one thing goes to another and whatever else, right? So you guys understand that. I know that. But before I end this, I was looking for this ladder so I can bring you guys on up.
Before I end this, we're going to go on up to the attic so you guys can see what all they've been up to and what they've been doing. I'm going to have my attic access in my bedroom.
It's warm up here, that's for sure.
All right, let's see here.
Woo doggy.
So, they've got quite a bit quite a bit of Everton.
I don't know what that is, but I'm assuming that that's my zone for uh the air handler for downstairs.
I'm just assuming. And then I'm assuming that that's the upstairs zone area.
Let's see here, you guys. Here's some stats for you for those that are curious of what kind of air handler I got. I got half horsepower motor.
Uh, I'm trying to see. R454B is my refrigerant on it.
I don't know what any of all that stuff means, but there it is right there. All right. See, I don't know what any of that stuff means. I do like it, though.
Now, this this is what I'm truly excited about.
All right.
It goes in one of those. It goes in and then exchanges the air from inside to outside and then it goes back out and whatnot and gives you fresh air. That's my ERV right there. I highly suggest an ERV for anybody that has allergies. Um for anybody that's looking for like fresher uh higher quality air inside your house and everything, I would definitely definitely suggest an ERV.
It's an energy recovery vent is what that is. If you're up north and uh you live in like the colder climates, they have an HRV, which is like a heating recovery vent itself. Um, but a lot of ERVs now end up doing both from what I was researching and uh do really well in the northern climate.
So definitely suggest hiring a professional to doing that cuz I got no idea what the heck it is. I just know it's a really really good system and I have allergies. My kids have allergies and this pollen out here is no joke. So I really want to make sure that the air that's inside of our house is going to be perfectly fine and healthy for everybody years to come and uh limit the amount of us times that we get sick. Better air quality for your house. I don't know. I don't see why not to do it. And then the dehumidifier. Why not when we're out here in the the humid air all the time? We're we're constantly fighting the humidity. So, that's a no-brainer to me on that to be quite honest. Uh regardless of anything else, the dehumidifier definitely needs to be done out here in this uh climate zone and everything else. But that is uh where we're at. And I can't wait for them to get the uh dehumidifier in and uh tie that in as well.
I don't know how that one's going to go.
We'll uh we'll figure it out together cuz uh I have no idea. Like I said, this is the first time we're building. I do know that I've learned a lot with this AC system in a in a sense of I should have went with two foot uh twoft ceiling joists.
That would have made things a little bit easier. Um but yeah, that was that's been interesting up there. I'm not going to lie.
We'll uh we'll see how everything rolls out and pans out. But it's up. It's in.
And I can't wait to get this AC going, which means I'm going to be putting footto butt on on the plumbing. I'm be putting foot to butt to the electrical.
I'm going to get all of that stuff situated so that way I can start drywalling as well as in the meantime of drywalling, I'm going to be doing the sophets and all that other stuff because we've got to hang all the drywall. We got to mud everything and then I got to wait for it to dry to where I can actually sand it. And once it's sanded, then I got to go back and mud it. Then I got to wait for it to dry again. So, in those dry times, I might as well be doing like the sophets and getting it to where it's fully fully closed off and I can close in everything to a point where once that's done, I can actually insulate up there and we can run this AC cuz that that would be awesome right now. I'm not going to lie. Especially before the summer. Uh that's going to be uh that's going to be our goal. The month of May is going to be a month that we uh all will never forget and will always remember. So, Anyho, that's going to be your guys's update for our AC system. So, stay tuned for another video. Like I said, they're coming out this week and I'm going to be doing a lot of other stuff. So, I got to get off this video. Go keep on working and doing other stuff around and then uh we'll catch you guys on another video.
So, I hope you guys enjoyed this update of where we're at and what's going on and what you guys are going to see in the upcoming future. plumbing stuff over here and swapping that floor system around and more HVAC. So, if you guys have any suggestions, now's the time to put it down in the comments section so that way we can actually see it before we start getting to work. But, I wanted to get this out there to you guys, get you guys an update and keep you guys posted of what's going on over here at Simple Life Reclaimed. If you guys want to have more updates and know what's going on on a day-to-day basis, we do have a Second Side channel itself. It's called Real Life with SLR, okay? And uh we do a lot of updates over there, you guys. We uh give you guys a lot of the family vlogs. We show you guys what's going on on the backside. We've got all sorts of stuff working on over on the property. And if you want to see a lot of what's been going on, it's spring and spring has sprung. Definitely go on over there and check what's going on you guys. There's a lot going on. But till then, I really hope you guys have a good one. And uh I guess I'm going to be chopping out this uh wall. So I guess you'll see that on the next video, y'all. So until then, later.
