[00:00:00]Ghana has a rich history [music] that began with ancient African kingdoms and trade networks. Long before European arrival, powerful [music] states such as the Ashanti Empire controlled much of the region and became wealthy through gold trading [music] and strong military organization. In the 15th century, >> [music] >> Portuguese traders arrived and named the area the Gold Coast because of its vast gold resources.

[00:00:25]>> [music] >> Soon, other Europeans, including the British, Dutch, and Danes built forts along the coast and became [music] involved in trade, including the transatlantic slave trade. By the 19th century, Britain had taken control of the territory and made it >> [music] >> the British Gold Coast Colony. During colonial rule, educated Africans began demanding self-government. Under the leadership of Kwame Nkrumah, Ghana gained independence on March 6, 1957, [music] becoming the first sub-Saharan African nation to break free from colonial rule.

[00:01:02]After independence, Ghana experienced economic difficulties and military coups, including the overthrow of Nkrumah in 1966. [music] Over time, however, the country returned to democratic rule and [music] became one of Africa's most peaceful and stable democracies. Today, Ghana is respected for its democracy, [music] rich culture, cocoa and gold production, and important role in African unity and peacekeeping.
