The Dance of the Dragons was a devastating civil war between 129-131 AC that nearly destroyed the Targaryen dynasty, sparked by a succession crisis when King Viserys I named his daughter Rhaenyra as heir despite the laws of primogeniture, which led to the Greens (supporting Aegon II) and Blacks (supporting Rhaenyra) fighting for the Iron Throne, with the conflict beginning after Viserys's death when Alicent and Otto Hightower manipulated the succession by revealing Aegon's prophecy about an impending doom from the north.

The Only Recap You Need Before House Of the Dragon 3Added:
House of the Dragon carried the responsibility of being the first of many Game of Thrones spin-offs and this prequel was tasked with the huge task of depicting one of the most complex and significant events in Westerosi history, the Dance of the Dragons. Now, Game of Thrones fans know that this civil war was unspeakably destructive and decisive for the Targaryen dynasty, but it served such a major blow to the dragon riders that they never really recovered from it. Now, season 3 is set to open with this very conflict and here's an in-depth recap before returning to Westeros after a 2-year break. It's going to be a good one, so let's get into it.
>> You've come so far and yet you still don't know who you are.
>> So, the first season of House of the Dragon took an elaborate view of the conflict. Let's start with a little history lesson. The show is set roughly between the years 110 and 135 AC, but if we think about the actual story, it goes back to 101 AC, which is some 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones.
Now, that's when we would get some real context. In the prologue for House of the Dragon, we saw the Great Council of 101 AC where all the nobles of Westeros were gathered at Harrenhal. The reason?
To debate on the succession of King Jaehaerys the First. You see, Jaehaerys was a beloved ruler of Westeros, but had bad luck when it came to children, as in he couldn't keep them alive. And of course, that led to the issue of an unsettled succession. So, Jaehaerys, being the noble man he was, called upon the suggestions of the Seven Kingdoms as to who would be the best person to succeed him. Among the 14 contenders, two names rose to the top. One, his grandson, Prince Viserys Targaryen, and two, his great-grandson, Laenor Velaryon. As you might know, it was Viserys who sat on the throne particularly because Viserys came from a patrilineal Targaryen line, while Laenor came from the matrilineal side. Thus, the Westerosi nobles established this preference of choosing from the male line in matters of succession. This would play a huge role when Viserys would be choosing his heir in 110 AC.
Viserys found himself in a similar situation to his grandfather because his wife, Aemma, could only give him one daughter, Rhaenyra. And obviously, the natural line of succession fell on his brother, Daemon, but given his ill temperament and nature, let's just say he wasn't a favorite of the small council who deemed him unfit to sit on the Iron Throne. And I mean, fair. Mass violence was pretty much his hobby because the man rounded up the city's criminals and punished them while personally beheading an accused murderer with Dark Sister just as a show of force. In the meantime, Aemma goes through a risky pregnancy in the hopes of delivering a male heir, but it ends in a gruesome C-section and the son, Baelon, sadly dies after just a day.
Daemon thought it would be great to crack the joke Baelon was heir for one day in such a grim situation, which led to him being cast out of King's Landing by Viserys and him choosing Rhaenyra as his true heir, not paying heed to the laws of primogeniture. Rhaenys, who was Viserys's first cousin, was also in the line of succession, but after Rhaenyra became the named heir, she came to be known as the queen who never was, which strained her relationship with Viserys and Rhaenys. Having chosen Rhaenyra, Viserys also shared a piece of information, something which would go on to become the very basis of the civil war. Turns out Aegon the Conqueror didn't invade Westeros just because it was ripe for acquiring. Rather, he did so having experienced a vision that cold and death would one day come sliding down from the north. That would completely wipe away mankind unless there was a strong Targaryen king who could unite the continent to fight it.
This was brand new information for both Rhaenyra and GoT viewers, as well as the readers of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire. It would later be revealed that the details of Aegon's prophecy were lost to history sometime before Daenerys came to prominence, but coming to Rhaenyra, she was now under the burden of being the heir, grieving the loss of her mother, and trying to make sense of the warped romantic relationship she had with her uncle Daemon. Yep, the Targaryen empire was essentially medieval Alabama. Thankfully, she had her childhood friend Alicent Hightower, the daughter of Viserys' hand, Ser Otto Hightower, to lean on. Sadly though, their relationship had begun to crack for several reasons, and the biggest of them was Viserys marrying Alicent.
Basically, Alicent was used by Otto to win over Viserys and persuade him into remarrying. Yep, Otto wasn't that faithful after all. He wanted to establish a stronghold on the Targaryen empire and make his daughter produce the dynasty's heir. Now, while everyone else was trapped in a political drama, Daemon was starring in an action movie. Even before he was banished, Daemon was trouble incarnate. He couldn't accept defeat from Ser Criston Cole during the heir's tournament, he kept a mistress, Mysaria, while being married, and had this deep sexual tension with Rhaenyra.
Furious that Viserys had denied him the right to the Iron Throne and named Rhaenyra heir instead, Daemon left King's Landing with Mysaria on his dragon Caraxes the Blood Worm and made his way to Dragonstone. Oh, and he also killed his first wife, Lady Rhea Royce, to gain control of Runestone and claim House Royce's lands and wealth in the Vale. Why? Because eliminating Rhea made him eligible to marry Rhaenyra, which was the only strategic choice he had to keep his authority in King's Landing alive. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, ended up sleeping with Ser Criston Cole, which too would have consequences for her. More on that later, but sticking with Daemon for now, he teamed up with Corlys Velaryon, Rhaenys' husband and the Lord of Driftmark. He was the commander of the most powerful naval fleet in the world and set out to wage war in the Stepstones, an island chain located off the southeastern coast of Westeros. The excuse was that a gang of pirates, the Triarchy, were colonizing the Stepstones, which threatened trade to the Seven Kingdoms. Yes, this is the group whose leader was infamously known as the Crabfeeder. Daemon and the Velaryons defeated them, and Daemon returned to King's Landing wearing the Crabfeeder's crown, which he handed over to Viserys in an attempt to make him see him as the true king. That actually worked, and thereafter the brothers shared a much more cordial relationship.
On the other hand, Rhaenyra was coming of age and had to marry off soon to start a family, whether she wanted to or not. A reluctant Rhaenyra agreed to marry Corlys's son, Ser Laenor Velaryon, who was deemed the best fit for her due to his Valyrian blood, his father's naval strength, and his succession in the Stepstones. But for Rhaenyra, he was a great fit because he was in love with a man named Joffrey Lonmouth, which allowed her to continue her relationship with Criston. However, Criston Cole felt betrayed by this arrangement and also felt guilty for breaking his Kingsguard vow of chastity. He offered her to run away with him to Essos and get married, but when she rejected his offer, he turned against her. Now, weddings are rarely happy affairs in the world of Game of Thrones, and true to this tradition, Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding, too, turns into a bloodbath when the respective lovers of the bride and groom started a fight in which Cole killed Lonmouth. Right before the gory deaths, Alicent arrived wearing a green dress, which screamed her allegiance to House Hightower with a fresh sense of disregard for Rhaenyra, having realized how she used her as a shield to hide her illicit affairs with Cole. Now, in the first season of House of the Dragon, there were two time jumps. The first happened after Rhaenyra and Laenor's wedding, and it fast-forwarded 10 years to 124 AC, where Milly Alcock's adolescent princess was now traded for a woman in labor, played by Emma D'Arcy, and we see the birth of her third son, Joffrey Velaryon. She and Laenor had two other kids, Jacaerys and Lucerys, and Alicent, too, birthed two more children with Viserys, namely Prince Aegon and Princess Helena, while Aegon remains their eldest. But, there's a catch with Rhaenyra's children. They look nothing like Laenor. Instead, they're the spitting image of her friend Harwin Strong of House Strong. The confusion over the parentage of Rhaenyra's children further widens the divide between her and Alicent. Rhaenyra ultimately brings the Velaryons into her circle as close allies, with Rhaenys joining her side after her grandson, Prince Jacaerys Velaryon, is named Lord of Dragonstone. Alicent, on the other hand, added Harwin's brother, Larys Strong, to her ranks as Master of Whisperers. Larys later killed his brother and his father, Lyonel, by setting fire to their home at Harrenhal.
Daemon, too, settled with Laena Velaryon, Rhaenyra's sister-in-law, after he was forbidden from marrying Rhaenyra, and the two actually worked pretty well. They had two daughters, Rhaena and Baela, and the family traveled around the Free Cities of Essos, becoming the honored guests of many rich men. However, Laena died in childbirth, causing the Targaryens and Velaryons to arrive at Driftmark for her funeral, and a lot happened during that weekend. For starters, a fight between Rhaenyra's and Alicent's children ended with Aegon losing his left eye, while Aegon secretly claimed Laena's dragon, Vhagar, becoming the rider of the oldest and largest dragon in the world.
Meanwhile, Rhaenyra, Daemon, and Laenor conspired to fake Laenor's death so he could escape to the Free Cities with his lover, Qarl Correy. Just days later, amid all the chaos, Rhaenyra and Daemon finally elope and get married. Cut to the second time jump, which occurs around episode eight and takes us forward another six years. Rhaenyra and Daemon are happily married, living with their kids in Dragonstone, and they have two boys of their own, another Aegon and Viserys. But, their little bubble was burst when they had to come down to King's Landing to deal with the issue of, what else besides succession? Since Viserys, who was ill the whole season, was now visibly rotting. Jacaerys was acknowledged as Rhaenyra's direct heir and her second son Lucerys became the heir to the Valyrian homestead on Driftmark. But, with Corlys being grievously injured in battle, his brother Vaemond was now petitioning the crown to have Driftmark as his own and got his head sliced off by Daemon for insulting Rhaenyra. Viserys, however, managed to sit on the Iron Throne one last time and reaffirmed Rhaenyra as his heir. And while the whole family enjoyed a feast, tense dynamics among them became clearer than ever. And Viserys chose this to be the perfect time to take his last breath. Rhaenyra, however, wasn't there when her father died because she was in Dragonstone getting some things in order before returning to King's Landing. Her absence at the event of Viserys's death was the major push for the Dance of the Dragons. In his final moments, Viserys told Alicent and Aegon about the prophecy and their needing to be a Targaryen monarch in order to stop an impending doom. When a confused Alicent sought the suggestions of the Great Council, Otto and the conspirators made Aegon sit on the throne, blaming [music] a female ruler as unable to control the realm. Alicent, too, now believed that it was indeed her son Aegon that Viserys was talking about. And that's how Aegon was dragged unwillingly to his own coronation, where he was ultimately crowned and seated on the Iron Throne. Not even Rhaenys Targaryen bursting into the ceremony on dragonback could stop it. After suffering a devastating miscarriage, Rhaenyra resolved to reclaim what she believed was rightfully hers. At Dragonstone, Daemon, Corlys, Rhaenys, their children, and several other lords recognized her as the true queen of the Seven Kingdoms. She then sent her eldest sons as envoys. Jacaerys flew north to secure support from the Vale and Winterfell, while Luke traveled to Storm's End to win over the Baratheons.
Luke's mission was meant to be the easier one, but Team Green had sent their own envoy as well. At Storm's End, Luke and his small dragon encountered Aemond atop the massive Vhagar. After Lord Boros Baratheon refused to take a side, the two princes clashed in the skies above the Stormlands. Though Aemond appeared to only want to frighten him, Vhagar ultimately killed Luke and his dragon. That tragedy marked the end of House of the Dragon season 1 with the Dance of the Dragons finally beginning.
The realm was now even more divided on their views in matters of succession, which led to the rise of two factions within the Targaryen house, namely the blacks and the greens. The greens represented the Hightower supporters and Alicent and ruled from King's Landing with Aegon Targaryen II as their king.
In the meantime, Alicent began an affair with Ser Criston Cole, while Otto Hightower, who was once removed as the hand by Viserys, was desperately trying to consolidate his grandson's reign and gather alliances for the new king.
[music] Things were escalating in Dragonstone as well, where Rhaenyra had her own loyalists who had crowned her the rightful queen. Daemon tried to secure Harrenhal's support in her name, while Corlys and Rhaenyra created a blockade of the Gullet with the Valyrian fleet. The blockade was a strategic move to cut off food and supplies to King's Landing and cause unrest there. The second season of House of the Dragon kicks off right after the devastating ending of the first in 129 AC. Rhaenyra frantically searches the coastline for any sign of her son before discovering the remains of Luke and his dragon, Arrax. A heartbroken Rhaenyra now wanted revenge, and seeing her pain, Daemon quietly traveled to King's Landing to avenge Luke's death. Daemon pulled some strings and hired the Ratcatchers, Blood and Cheese, knowing they had access to the castle's tunnels and ordered them to kill Aemond. But, when things went awry, they ended up killing King Aegon's young son, Prince Jaehaerys, in front of his mother, Queen Helaena. The city was shook by such a gruesome murder and it descended into chaos. Sadly, the baby's assassination was turned into a political game with Otto Hightower organizing a grand funeral procession, blaming Rhaenyra, And yes, for a moment, the greens did gain the sympathy of the subjects. However, Aegon's grief quickly turned into rage and cruelty. After the rat catcher was captured trying to flee the city, [music] Aegon personally killed him. And soon afterward, he ordered every rat catcher in the Red Keep to be hung throughout King's Landing, including innocent men. When Otto would criticize [music] Aegon's move, he would again be removed from the council by Aegon. And he was replaced with Ser Criston Cole. Rhaenyra, on the other hand, was horrified [music] after learning about Jaehaerys's murder and immediately suspected Daemon's involvement. Their confrontation became explosive when Daemon [music] insisted he only ordered a son for a son and never intended for a child to die. But Rhaenyra no longer trusted him. Furious, Daemon left Dragonstone on Caraxes and headed for Harrenhal. Honestly, Daemon's time at Harrenhal was a little monotonous, but he acquired the castle without much resistance. But him being haunted by the ghosts of his past and having visions didn't really hit the spot. Anyways, Rhaenyra now understood that the realm would break into a full-scale war, tried her best to avoid it, which is where Daemon's former mistress, Mysaria, entered the picture.
With her help, Rhaenyra snuck into King's Landing disguised as a Septa to meet Alicent in the Great Sept of Baelor. During this conversation, Rhaenyra realized Alicent misunderstood King Viserys's dying words because Viserys had spoken about Aegon prophecy known as the song of ice and fire referred to Aegon the Conqueror, not Alicent's son, [music] Aegon the First.
Alicent, who slowly understood that she may have helped start a war [music] based on a misunderstanding. However, they both knew that it was already too late to stop the conflict. Daemon tried to unite the Riverlands behind Rhaenyra and authorized House Blackwood to attack House Bracken. [music] The violence quickly turned into atrocities, causing many river lords to distrust [music] Daemon instead of supporting him.
Meanwhile, Criston Cole began leading green armies across Westeros. Rather than attacking Harrenhal directly, he targeted strategic castles loyal to Rhaenyra, eventually laying siege to Rook's Rest. Princess Rhaenys volunteered to defend the castle atop her dragon, Meleys, and we knew she wasn't coming back from that. The attack was actually a trap orchestrated by Criston and Aemond, who were hidden nearby. Just as the battle began, Aegon unexpectedly arrived riding Sunfyre to prove his worth as king and warrior.
Meleys severely wounded Sunfyre, but Aemond, seeing an opportunity, blasted both Aegon and Sunfyre with dragonfire.
With Aegon falling from the sky badly burned, Rhaenys chose to turn back and fight Vagar directly. In a brutal clash, Vagar killed Meleys and Rhaenys, and the Battle of Rook's Rest became the war's first major dragon battle and a turning point in the conflict. Aegon survived but suffered permanent injuries, leaving him bedridden and barely able to speak.
Of course, Aemond was thrilled [music] that the king was incapacitated, and the Small Council appointed him as Prince Regent over Alicent. Even Criston increasingly distanced [music] himself from her and didn't support her argument. Alicent slowly realized that she had lost political influence within the very system she had helped to build, and Rhaenyra, too, struggled against sexism within her own council. At [music] this point, Mysaria became one of Rhaenyra's closest and most trusted advisers. The two women gradually developed a deeper emotional connection.
[music] Mysaria then helped turn public opinion against the Greens by secretly sending food ships into the starving [music] city under Rhaenyra's banner.
Rhaenyra then appointed Corlys as the Hand of the Queen after Rhaenys's death.
Rhaenyra [music] was now looking for more dragon riders, and Corlys's illegitimate son, Addam, became an unexpected hero who was chosen as a rider by Seasmoke. She then brought in more Targaryen bastards from King's Landing in a process known as the Red Sowing. One of them, Hugh, managed to bond with Vermithor, one of the largest dragons. Another man, Ulf, was able to ride Silverwing. With three new dragon riders, the Blacks now got a major military advantage, and Aemond realized the shift in power coming to the envoys she sent. Rhaenyra successfully secured House Stark's allegiance in the north, while Daemon understood the larger destiny of House Targaryen and the threat that would one day come from the north through prophecies and hallucinations at Harrenhal. Eventually, Daemon fully recommitted himself to Rhaenyra's cause and publicly swore loyalty. As the season neared its end, Alicent secretly traveled to Dragonstone to stop [music] the mess she had created and hoped to end the war peacefully. She finally admitted that she misunderstood Viserys' final words and offered to surrender King's Landing once Aemond left the city. Rhaenyra agreed to the proposal, but insisted there could be no lasting peace while Aegon lived. Alicent reluctantly accepted that her son had to die for the realm to recognize Rhaenyra as queen. However, they had no idea that Larys Strong had already begun helping Aegon escape King's Landing. By the season finale, armies from every corner of Westeros were marching towards war, and the Lannisters gathered their forces for Team Green, while the Starks prepared to support Team Black, and fleets across the Narrow Sea were drawn into the conflict. The season ended with the realm standing on the edge of complete destruction. Yes, the Dance of the Dragons had truly begun, leaving Westeros inches away from one of the bloodiest civil wars in its long history. Sadly though, that's all we got for you today. The third season of House of the Dragon is ready to pick up right from the end of the second, and we're guessing that the very first sequence will be of [music] this massive war.
Honestly, the second season concluded with so much tension that we can barely wait for the new season to arrive to get back into this rabbit hole. That said, let us know your [music] thoughts in the comment section down below, and if you enjoyed this video, don't forget to like and subscribe so we know to make [music] more stuff like it. We're going to be producing a ton of House of the Dragon season 3 videos, so keep [music] an eye out for those, but otherwise, thanks for watching. Stay safe out there, and we'll see you in the next one. Bye for now.
