[00:00:08]Lightning begins inside a thundercloud.

[00:00:11]Strong winds cause water droplets, ice crystals, and hailstones to collide with each other.

[00:00:16]These collisions separate electrical charges with positive charges gathering near the top of the cloud and negative charges near the bottom.

[00:00:25]As the charge difference grows, a strong electric field forms. When it becomes powerful enough to overcome the air's resistance, a sudden discharge of electricity occurs between the cloud and the ground, or within the cloud itself.
