I Tried Some Japan’s Weirdest Chip Flavors
Added:[snorts and clears throat] >> What is up, ladies and gentlemen?
Welcome back. This is Zack Smith, aka the one and only 7-ft Jack Talos. And this is another Eating with Giants. And this week again, we are going to be focusing on Japanese snack foods. And I figured last week we did Kit Kats, this week we would do chips.
So, I got three unique selections for us. Some you guys might be familiar with, some I'm sure you've never heard of.
But the first one is the Calbee Ume chips. So, in case you were unfamiliar unfamiliar with what Ume is, this is a pickled plum.
Um they normally put this in drinks, but they put this stuff on everything. It comes in sushi, rice balls, like I mean, like I think I had I think I had a women's hour two at one point in time. So, that's one. This one's going to be really really unique cuz if you've never had it, it's very like I don't know, it's sour and like it has this sweetness to it, but it's not like sugary.
The next I think I'm going to say this name right or wrong, but it's Tochigi Wagyu beef chips. So, this type of Wagyu, again, I think it's Tochigi. I'm not 100%. Again, to my Japanese friends, I'm so sorry.
But I actually have really high hopes for this, guys. The Wagyu the beef over here is without question, to me at the very least, some of the very best in the world, if not the very best in the world. Those cows are loved. Um and you can tell in every bite.
So, And finally, guys, one I think you guys will be familiar with, and not the flavor. We're going to try some crunchy Cheetos. These are honey and cheese flavored. Don't be fooled by the pizza, that's just the cheese. So, it's honey and cheese. And I'm actually anxious to give these a shot.
Um to be honest with you, man, I think first is going to compete between these two, with this one being a little bit, you know, not not so far, not so much of my alley. I'm not a big ume guy anyways. I like it in my drink, like I said, but otherwise I'm not super big into eating it. It's just kind of intense. But, we will start with one of the favorites. We will start with the Wagyu chips.
So, if you guys know anything about Wagyu guys, you know it's an expensive cut of meat there in the States. Like here though, Okay.
I want to pop it down there. Here it goes.
Do they smell good?
Check them out.
There it is. It kind of reminds me of like a Ruffles and a Lay's had a baby cuz it's thin, but it's still got ridges. So, it smells like fatty, meaty, like salty.
So, here goes nothing. The Chichikki Wagyu chip.
So, it's a lot more subtle than I thought it was going to be. Like it's not near as heavy of a flavor.
It's almost like someone deep fried a chip in steak fat, you know, like the stuff that comes off a steak.
It's not near as salty as I thought it was going to be.
They're good.
I could sit and eat a bag of these.
Yeah.
But, I guess I just kind of expected a more intense flavor out of it.
So, boom, there's number one in the list.
I'm a fan. I like it, guys. I'm trying a little bit of water here and trying to get my palate cleansed.
All right.
On to number two.
So, we'll try the next unique one. These are the ume chips. Like I said, this >> [snorts] >> I'm expecting this one to be a little sour here, so.
It smell like So, it's not awful. It's just pungent, but it burns the nostrils a little bit. I suspect that's from like the pickling of it.
But, there it is.
It's got the little red ume flakes on it. I'm supposing that's what that is, but here goes nothing, guys.
I'm not I'm not going to hate it.
But, this isn't something I just go into somewhere and get for myself. No.
So, like I said, it's kind of like the sour cream I didn't with the sour part, the vinegar flavor.
But, it has that sweetness from the ume on the front end.
Um I'm definitely digging the Wagyu over these.
But, if you like ume, but not like the heaviness of like just trying to eat like it like just whole or by itself or something.
But, you just like a light flavor of it.
These are good.
These are actually I would like I said, I wouldn't get them for myself, but if these were at a party, I I would have one or two.
All right.
Now for the one I personally been waiting for, the honey and cheese crunchy Cheetos. I don't get that puffy stuff, guys. I don't eat puffy Cheetos, so don't ask. I mean, maybe if you ask, but I would just never do it for myself.
Crunchy all day. You guys just know what field I'm in, what team I play for.
Okay, we got it. Don't Don't ask how I learned that trick. I'm actually not very proud of it. I didn't want to rip it open and have them go everywhere.
That was the big reason.
Anyways, man, this does not smell cheesy.
It does It doesn't smell like either of the things it's supposed to be.
It's got almost again that vinegary smell to it. Like a little bit, just a hint, but it's definitely like not near as orange as a Cheeto as I'm used to. This is definitely more yellow.
So, okay.
Yeah.
Oh, yeah. 1 2 3 that's right. I was just genuinely curious.
This one has been so hard.
I can't decide if I like this or not.
You can really taste the honey.
That comes through a lot.
It almost reminds me of like that like honey that's sweet like what is it called? That like the honey and barbecue, like the sweet honey, spicy honey.
But, sweet heat, that was it. Like that that that freaking KFC sweet heat sauce.
Where like I can really taste the honey and there's a little bit of a kick on it.
And I that's supposed to be the cheese.
Like it's not spicy.
But um yeah, if I if I had to rate it though, I I would say like, you know, on a scale like again six out of five I mean six out of 10, all right? Something I'd eat like if it was there.
Um but again, not something I'd probably give for myself.
All right.
Time to choose a winner.
So it kind of worked out a little bit how I thought thought it happening.
The Wagyu definitely gets number one. I was going to sit and eat a chip. It's going to be this chip. No doubt.
Number two the honey and cheese Cheetos.
The texture is great on these, by the way. Got to say, they're not too hard, but they're not they're just crunchy enough. With number three being the ume plum.
Surprisingly not bad though. I I liked them more than I thought I was going to like them. So But anyways, guys Mhm.
