Route 66: Why This Highway Still Captivates Millions

[00:00:04]My dream is to one day travel the full extent of Route 66. Right now with my current work situation and everything I have going on, I'm not able to do that, but maybe one day I will be able to. The following video is going to show you pictures and illustrations, some from myself from my own travels in Illinois and some from Efron Lopez. And it will give you a historic uh information about what Route 66 is for people that don't know or for people that just want to brush up on their information. [00:01:12]Route 66, established in 1926 and famously dubbed the Mother Road, was a 2,400 mile highway connecting Chicago to Santa Monica. It served as a vital migration route during the 1930s, Dust Bowl, a military transport corridor during World War II, and a symbol of freedom, roadtrip culture, and westward expansion across eight states.

[00:01:39]Known as the main streets of America, it was central to American westward migration in the 1930s and later became a symbol of pop culture and the freedom of the road.

[00:01:51]And the mother road was coined by John Steinbeck in the grapes of wrath. The name represents the road as a source of hope, escape, and struggle for migrants heading west. known for its unique kitsy attractions such as the Wigwa Motel and the Blue Swallow Motel along with diners and neon signs and it connected Chicago, Illinois to Santa Monica, California, passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona.

[00:02:24]The rise of the interstate highway system led to its decommission in 1985, but many sections are now preserved as historical sites and tourist attractions, and it was popularized by Bobby Troop's song, Get Your Kicks, on Route 66. It remains an iconic American highway.

[00:02:44]While many travelers in the midentth century viewed it as a road of opportunity, it is important to note that as one user noted on history.com, it was a place where African-Ameans faced discrimination in many sundown towns during the segregation era. Many people still use this road today as a historic view of what our history has to offer. Now, there's many people still that don't know about this road because they take the main roads, but if you ever get a chance, cruise on Route 66 because you're sure to see a lot of important historical things and visually captivating sites.
