This simulation effectively demonstrates that superior damage control and gunnery systems are more decisive in naval combat than raw firepower alone. It provides a nuanced perspective on how operational resilience often outweighs sheer numerical advantage.

Richelieu vs Alsace — The Biggest Battleship France never built, gets stolen? | War on the SeaAjouté :
Hello value viewers. I hope you're all doing very well and welcome back to our latest what if World War II one versus one battle. So the signal arrives at Admiral T0547 a Germans marine commando unit. The same men who seized the Norwegian coastal batteries at Narvik in a single night has taken the Alsace. She has been sitting at Tulon southern France home of the French Navy. She is 94% complete, awaiting final fitting out. The yard workers thought the war was over. They were wrong. Under the cover of a December storm and coordinated diversionary raid on Breast, a 200man Cre's marine assault team boarded her at midnight. By 0500, her skeleton crew had her engines turning. By 0600, she was in the Rua Eststerie. By the time the free French garrison realized what had happened, Alice was doing 28 knots northwest into the Bay of Bisque. Not yet fully armed, not fully crewed, but moving. And Rishilu, the ship our was designed to replace, has been detached from the eastern fleet on emergency orders and is making 32 knots northwest to intercept. Her captain knows this ship. He helped design her. He knows every advantage she has over his command. He also knows she is not yet complete. The question is whether he can bring her to action before she reaches breast and whether if he does eight guns are enough to stop 12. This is not the battle France planned. This is the battle France never imagined. Rishilu versus Alsace the stolen battleship. So guys we have Chief today stealing the Alsace. We have dirty in Rishiu coming to stop him. Let's very quickly buzz over the stats because we've never seen this ship before. It's very exciting.
Alce 870 ft long, 116 ft in the beam, 51,000 tons. Naon 2,000 men 32 knots.
Number in class would have been four.
Weapons there are 12 15 in 33 quad turrets by 45 long caliber 45,000 range. Reload time 30 seconds. Secondary guns 9 6 in 55 long 29,000 yd range 10-second reload time. Tertiary guns 24 3.9 in 55 long 23,000 yd range 3 second reload time. Unbelievable. This is nasty stuff. Visible horizon 11 mi. Surface radar an excellent 22 nautical miles.
Armor belt 14 1/2 in. Deck 9 in. Mag 17 1/2 in. Turret bridge 17 in.
Superructure 1 in. I would not want to be the guy going against this. Speaking of which, Michelu, a quick reminder, 813 ft long, 109 ft in the beam, 47,000 tons, 32 knots, naon, 2,000 men.
Weapons, eight, only eight in two core turrets, 15 in x 45 long caliber, 45,000 yd range, 30 second reload time.
Secondary guns, 12, 3.9 in x 45 long, 17,000 yd range, 6second reload time.
Tertiary guns only nine. 6 in 55 long, 29,000 yard and 10 second reload time.
Finally, 11 nautical mile visible horizon, a measly 16 mile radar belt 14 in deck 7 in mag turret 17 in bridge superructure 16in. Initial orders please. Rishelu captain >> straight ahead AP blue spot >> the stolen the nordly stolen alsace orders please >> 45° to starboard >> AP full spot smoke on >> and we're off can you get away first time we've seen Alace and it looks absolutely legendary before we get into the absolute thick of the battle can we have a description of what she is why she wasn't built what she was planned to be she is one of three designs uh that were meant to follow on the rishu much like We got line and H39 and Montana.
Actually, more Iowa thinking more about it. There are three designs. One with 9 15-in guns, 12 15-in guns, or 96in guns.
I do have the 915in gun variant as well if you want to do that. Basically, the a follow on battleship from Rishloo expanded. And what we have is a postwar fit with those 100 mil guns and those anti-aircraft guns. I think they're 37 mil or 50 mil, something like that. But we're not going to be using them today.
It's just the 100 ms and the five in the 6-in gun. Sorry, they're actually the same amount of 6-in guns.
>> The really nice thing about her 6-in guns, they're all in the midline, so they can fire unlike the all scoop or the Rishelu who put our her guns.
>> So, your ambesided, they can go starboard and port. Wow, this thing can lay down stupid amounts of firepower.
And Rishelu is a brilliant ship. She was only beaten by Iowa, let's not forget, when we did the actual, you know, the real ship competition. So, she's one of the best in the world.
I remember. I remember.
>> Check my rear arc.
>> I know. Um, Chief, uh, rear arc is just in. So, >> put me on narrow, spot off, smoke off.
>> Narrow, spot off, fire, smoke off. I I got to remember Rishlu was, of course, a treaty battleship limited to 35,000 tons. Elsas is a post treaty where it didn't really matter anymore, but she wasn't built purely because France was invaded. Pretty much the only reason.
>> Can you spot her off dirty?
>> Yeah. Hard left.
>> Hard left. I eye.
>> If you want a fun fact about Alsace, her in in this guys, her funnel can actually turn.
>> Why?
>> It actually turn it turns to um apparently not obscure the fire directors. So it would actually angle away from the gun. So point this way towards us.
>> Brilliant. Brilliant. Brilliant. Yeah, really good stuff. What a ship. Rishel you here checking your gunnery you're just in uh you're just in but you're borderline is turning and turning fairly fast >> and how far after Dunkerk was the all sauce made or the rishu made >> I mean Rishlu wasn't even finished um by Dunk by this point you got to remember Rishidu was finished in the United States I believe she was refitted in 1944 >> yeah so so She never even finished towards the end of the war. Jean Rael sister of course for the 50 >> right mid.
What about you spotter?
>> Keep it on for two more salvos.
>> I on loose as well. Also you happy.
>> Uh put it on full please.
>> Stand by. Uh AP full fire for effect.
Go. All right. 25,000 y. Wow. 3 minutes in. Michelle, you hit twice. Well, there you go. There are 50%. No, there are more than 50% more guns firing. There are 60 or 70% more guns firing, aren't there, guys?
>> Loose spot off.
>> So, that is AP loose, no spot. You've got a good solution. You can do it. Just not enough guns firing. I'll say hit and it bounced off right off. Not you're going to see that a lot today, I imagine, with that armor thickness.
>> It was all I >> uh armor.
>> Full spot.
>> Full spot. I confirmed. Michelle, you hit again. Ow.
>> H Yeah. Yeah. I can see this happening a lot.
>> I mean, they both have the same guns.
>> It's a Yeah, it's an Iowa Montana thing.
He's basically a Montana is an Iowa and a half >> and has a lot more armor as well on top of that starboard.
>> 15° to starboard. I just hit and hit bad. That's great work. Uh starboard is right and that's done. So, good work dirty blue.
>> Not bad. That's lucky. So, okay, I'll count my blessings there.
narrow >> uh AP narrow and no spot and fire low footprint. Alsace, you're struggling for solutions cuz are you turning? You are turning, aren't you? Doesn't matter. You spot on, by the way. That's why.
>> Wow. Please.
>> God, what a hit. What a hit. Lucky Bard.
That's the best hit you can get. You can get a hit in the game. Viewers, you take the bridge out, you you you nuke the vessel. It can't fire. It can't do anything.
>> Efficiency 79 already just one bridge hit.
>> Yeah, it will get better, but the ship will get better. But great great start.
Great start. Right.
>> Last uh straight west.
>> Straight west. I making a run for that S. Where are you running to by the way?
America.
>> No, Germany. Germans. Cremary. My bad.
>> Yep. Trying to get to the North Sea.
>> North Sea. Roger. Yeah, they do that, don't they? Rishloo spot on 10° right you are narrow fire 10 degrees right I s light that well it started off as a good battle viewers I like it we are 5 minutes in >> and it's all freaking action >> of course the one thing else has contend with if she escapes the RAF >> yeah I should worry about that then >> so if you're enjoying these what if matches folks hit the subscribe ring the bell please we're dropping three battles a week and if you want early access to battle ratics the weekly chat about battle team become a YouTube member join us on discord patre links in the description right back to it >> roger okay I'll say uh pretty much G west west she overturns for some reason but anyway whatever um solution is bad but it'll work its way back up >> we have sust that they they're slow to turn and quick not to turn because there's so much momentum in that turn >> roger 50,000 tunner and all that >> yep >> right let's have a look damage is mediocre damage. That's still a classic here, but it is going to get better shortly. Yeah, really good. I I personally love these What If Battles viewers, you guys obviously like them, too, but not as much as I thought. I thought they were going to get massive viewing figures. Is it simply because viewers that a lot of you don't are not interested in what if ships? They're just kind of a bit fanboy or is it is it just me that's a bit out of touch? I suspect that's probably what it is. There is one more gap which is a ship known as I'm going to butcher the pronunciation. Is it going to be gap? I call it the gas dome gas can for water warships. Um, essentially it's originally with a 4 and a half turrets.
>> So that I' I've saw some comments about it. People might want it, but it's designed so that where it can actually fire.
>> Yeah, fair enough.
>> And then all you do after that is you add another turret onto and then you make out SAS. We rarely do rear firing though because it's gen because of our aggression that we do in our battles. We rarely see rear firing.
>> Elsa, um, take my spot off. Put me on loose.
>> Loose, spot off. Fire confirmed.
>> Real AP full.
>> Rishelu AP full spot off. Fire and confirmed. That will slow down a bit.
Relu hit. Relu hit. But nothing at any level that's going to worry Rishelu. We are 8 minutes in.
JS has not made stamped. She started really well obviously, but she's not uh thus far.
>> So, the big gamble for both of these big battleships is getting one of those turrets hit.
>> Yeah, it's four guns out.
>> Especially this guy. That's a 50% down.
>> Both 15-in guns, right?
>> Mhm.
>> And they're 15-in guns trying to fire at basically 25,000 yards broadside. So, it it's really dependent on who has the better round and gets that lucky shot, right?
>> Mhm. That went through the belt. Look, that they're really high velocity guns.
Really high velocity guns. These French ones on uh full >> I uh AP full fire. Okay.
>> Smoke off.
>> Smoke of II.
>> So, let me know if you enjoyed the little intro there, folks. Uh I missed a trick actually. We should have had to escape from this >> solution on reach.
>> Perfect.
Can't do any better.
>> AP narrow.
>> AP narrow. So why is he so good? And why is he so Oh no. 99. There you go.
>> Go ahead and put me on narrow too.
>> Oh yeah. Vicu actually escaped from breast with a bunch of gold on her back in June 1940 and uh got to the North Africa coast with a bunch of gold on her. She hadn't even got a tow operation at that point. So been a bit less interesting match perhaps.
>> 94% 97%. Well, here we go.
>> How say hit you hit 6 in nothing.
>> Weirdly that we both got hit by this 6 in at the same time.
>> 5° to port AI. It's all modeled. All the armor's modeled, isn't it? So it's must just be luck. Must just be luck.
>> It is all luck. I've built them by myself.
>> Yeah, Longo's put a lot of time into these models now.
Als is a great ship as well. I've did a bit of practice with it. Get it right range and it's really strong.
>> Well, Jisha Lou is always punched above her weight though. As I said, the only ship that could beat her was um >> AP Loose.
>> AP Loose spot on. Yeah. And fire. The only ship that ever beat her was Iowa.
And she's got full cheat mode. So, you know, AP Loose spot. She's just the best balance. Best balance.
>> AP full spot.
>> AP full spot. I I AP full spot fire confirmed. Done. Belt hit pen.
>> Uh wish built hit pen. Rich built hit pen. Always lucky not to take out an engineering space. Continue as we mean to go. We are 20. Uh we're just going along at 25,000 y.
>> So the last one battle we put up was su versus bismok or bismok versus whichever way you want to say. Uh we had a lot of rather skeptical uh technical interest in that battle has to be said on whether So would actually get out of the mat without blowing something uh and then be able to battle what she did.
>> So they've actually requested that we replay it maybe against Yamato or Montana which look you pronouncing it right as well. Amazing.
>> Uh right so that is you and you are on full spotter off and fire and check this dude. He is. Do you want your spot or off? Dirty off.
>> Loose spot. Fire. Off they go. Right, we're closing now. So, something's going to change. We don't know what's going to change, but something's going to change.
>> I'm going to make the obligatory. We don't own these mods, folks. We cannot release them. Statement.
>> Yeah, they're all available, but you Yeah, not our version is not available.
>> Yeah, you'll need to go source them yourself. Uh, Boo is the best place to go on Discord. uh we don't have access to we can give away as it were.
>> Yeah. I mean yeah all of them found them all.
>> I'll say AP narrow AP narrow. I'll say >> it's really interesting the design difference between uh the French and like say the rest of the world and how they design battleships.
>> They they they just the rest of the world does you know four turrets of how many guns and the French are like no we'll put them all in the front.
>> The aviation's the same. They always do their own thing. They've never they never cop anyone to be fair to >> armor vehicles. Again, you got the same when everyone else was going big heavy tanks. They made AMX30 >> an AMX13 with that weird revolving drum which everyone seems to me.
>> Yeah, they innovate. They're innovators.
>> To do their own thing, and I love them for it as a Brit. That's very weird for me to say, but I do love them for it.
>> Yes, it is.
>> Their battleships do look good, though.
They look menacing.
>> Mhm. They're good. These are really good ships. Uh 24,000 yard range, and that's it. We are closing. Closing. closing.
>> Thank you.
>> Um, we're as I said, we're in the south of France here. We got the whole world in this in this thing, which is great in this game. That's that's the south of France, isn't it? It's too long.
>> That is too long.
>> Yeah, we've literally just gone out the harbor, swung on to the uh sea, and there's literally trying to block the way out.
>> Oh, hit by a quad. A quad 15.
>> Have we ever seen a quad 15?
>> I think I think it was more than a quad.
I think I saw two more on top. Very good hit. I'll say smoke on.
>> Jesus Christ.
>> Rudder to port.
>> I think you're smoking enough ch >> AP loose spot.
>> I did not see that coming. She luck of the freaking Irish. That was luck of the Norwegians.
>> She's getting absolutely pounded by 6 in as well.
>> Jesus. Right.
>> They both have radar, right?
>> Oh yeah. This one's got a better radar.
This one's got a bigger radar. It's amazing. There's something about that [ __ ] Als gets if Alsas gets a couple of thousand yards closer and she's repaired things might change a bit.
>> 100 mil opening up on Alsas.
>> Uh it is the side ones.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Visual. Okay. That's going to help.
>> Damage on region.
>> Not a lot. Standby. Uh right. Done. And I've given you everything you want.
Rishalu. You wanted I pressed something by accident. Never mind. Uh no nothing.
No nothing really. A little bit of built but nothing you can't handle.
>> Um >> weather is starboard. The next Wednesday recording we do is Turpitz versus H39.
Somebody's got to explain that one. Uh, and then Hood versus G3. And that's going to be another one. Somebody's got to explain basically.
>> I just wanted to see my solution.
>> Yeah, we're good.
>> Just going to say the H39 turbine fight is basically going to be this but German and um the G3 is this but British battle cruisers cuz we were following on. Rear up check for C for chief camp.
>> Yeah, I'm doing it.
>> Yep. Rudder midship.
>> Smoke off AP narrow spiral.
>> And if you're wondering why we're playing >> same nation ships against people uh each other, it's because we chose to. Uh it's actually a generational leap in many cases between a an older battleship and a newer battleship. And it's usually the new battleship that never gets made because people realized that aircraft carriers were going to be the um the future. We also don't play planes in the game because we know what happens if you put planes against ships.
>> Yeah. And that gets boring pretty quick.
>> AP narrow.
>> Uh AP narrow. All right. They're both in their killing phase right now.
>> 10° to giving you everything you can. Check at 91%. Brish Leu 93%.
>> Engine hit. Engine hit for what it's worth.
>> I don't care.
>> He don't care, G. He don't care.
>> He will shortly.
>> 22 and a half thousand yard range. It's 93 93. They're equal. A recall. Here we go. Someone is going to get a big quadruple 10 million quad twin pull hit.
Who's it going to be?
>> Yeah, I think those going to get nagged.
>> Mhm. Those shells are about 8 rounds each to use a French metric. 1,700 lb.
O, there's no 16 in. It's pretty heavy.
They're on tight spread. So, next time someone gets a hit, it's going to be a big hit with lots of bullets in. Bang.
91%.
85%. Oh. Oh, gun out. Uh, what is the right >> hard seen that one? Yep.
>> B turret.
>> Yeah, that's that that's that issue.
Full barrel straight out.
>> Yeah, it's a big turret. It's easy to hit and is very valuable. How long? Oh, fire. God damn it. Gutters. All right.
Well, it swings. It swings. It swings.
Of course, historical context, these guns have split into twins in their turret. So, >> hang on.
>> How can I still fire?
>> I think we've Yeah, I think the I think BNA turret on the swapped. Yeah, >> doesn't matter.
>> We'll fix next next time we use her.
>> How's the 10° to >> 10° sport. I I >> also full AP full spot and goal.
>> Uh idle spanner. Put that on that engine fire.
>> Yeah. Give me a sec. You want your engine as well? Yeah, you do. Don't you I know you do. Don't even need to ask.
Done. All right. Uh let's go. Let's have a look at this. Right. You'll get that.
No. No. You won't get that back soon.
Construct. What's your Okay, that's pointless. Do you want your spot on?
>> Yes.
>> Check. 21,000 y. Check our safe space.
>> My a turret is not working. B tur it is.
>> Whatever works, right? You got need some hit accuracy. So, let's work that solution up.
>> Auto ship. Okay. 2 minutes. 2 minutes.
You're back in it. I spann on it.
>> Stop healing [ __ ] that doesn't need doing.
>> Step away for one minute and it all changes.
>> Yep. 2 minutes.
Yeah, you really got to take your eyes off those sails for two minutes and they'll go back to >> off. Who said that?
>> You sound different today, chief. You sick.
>> I've got a little bit of a head.
>> There we go. I I know you sounded different. AP narrow. I know where my boys are sick. Uh, done.
>> We did have a value viewer ask us to use >> one tick left rudder.
>> One tick left rudder. AI, >> which Cap and I used to use back in the Armor 3 days, but we haven't used it since. I have no idea how to use it, though.
>> No, I really wouldn't know. Okay, let's check time.
>> Just over a minute.
>> Oh, we are working on our team as well.
>> Okay. Uh yeah, it is what it is.
That is >> that's that range I was talking about with >> very hard to recover from.
>> So, damage passes in this game, folks.
those little 10° starboard.
>> In my head, a little parties of probably 20 sailors or so just uh with wood and sheets of metal and big sledgehammers and maybe welding gear on that >> half a minute. He's got a turn though, >> so he's got more engine.
>> He's not too bothered about engine now.
I don't think he wants that gun back and he wants it back now. He needs that back and then he can fight again.
>> Right rudder. Was that two ticks right?
>> Yes.
>> All right. Perfect. Don't need anything.
Nothing I can give you. Ralu.
What can I give you? What can I give you?
You don't need your spotter on technically. Guns turning. Guns turning.
Fire for effect. Spotter off. Look at that baby turn. Come on. Come on. Got to support the underdog. Viewers got to support the underdog.
>> So dirty's done a really catchy thing there. He's turned while he's had his gun out. So, uh, he's freshened up that belt on that side. Uh, his damage parties are dealing with fire, flooding, and damage itself. So, they've got to put out fire, pump the compartment out, and then deal with any damage.
>> I'll say solution, please.
>> Spot on.
>> Confirmed.
Put a check for repair on that flooding on the bow. 2 minutes.
>> That's fanned out again.
>> Come on.
>> All right. Well, there flooding in the back.
>> Probably not getting that back.
>> Gutted. Really gutted.
Double on our ass.
>> So that's a double time on that.
>> Yeah, that's >> good shot. Good shot. Predator loose.
>> Smoke on AP loose. AP loose. Smoke on.
Done.
>> Doing the math here. Vishu should be doing two of the damage.
>> So again, you are watching Davos. Rishu is now in the range where she she basically lost the front 50% fire down for the majority of the kill bot zone which is where we are now. Yeah, >> too late to maneuver. It's too late for this. Is >> likely to go any one way now, isn't it?
Unless uh unless Mag Buster lives up to his name.
>> The main thing was that hit on that turret on >> every time a turret goes down.
>> He's going to try it.
>> Hold on.
>> He's going to try it. But I'll bump him out. Bump him out.
>> Time on that uh flight.
>> Uh uh 8 minute and a half bit.
>> Engine fire.
>> Yeah. Uh, engine fire minute.
>> That was my bridge.
>> Bridge gone. Bridge gone.
>> Ah, sugar. You're all good.
Oh my god. Yeah.
>> Yep. There it is.
>> Oh, that went quick.
>> You don't often see this ship uh dying.
Question. Has any So, we try and match them up with the the what if ship, the thing they sort of replaced. That's very rough, but sort of why we've done it.
Has any of the real ships beat their what if partner? Do you know?
Yes. Um, one of the American ship, I believe.
>> Was it Constellation?
>> Yeah, Constellation.
>> No, Constellation B Colorado, guys.
Constellation >> spot.
>> It was the hybrid carrier that loose.
>> Yeah, the Vanguard's about to do it, too.
>> Awkward. Yeah, Nebraska had 1650 guns over the machine. So, >> no, Nebraska has 1645. Still >> 45s. They're huge versus was it I can't remember who he is in that one. I think the same guns.
>> Uh, but I seem to remember I just got a lucky hit. So, >> yeah, he let you close too much.
>> Yeah. And then it just becomes the dice roll as soon as these guns get within range and start doing damage. It's literally just, you know, roll the D20, see what happens. 6 in accord.
>> What a violent battle.
>> 27 minutes. Well done, guys. That was interesting because initially Alace was winning. Then Rishu to everyone's surprise, God, that was loud. And then Rich to everyone's surprise started winning and everyone was like, "What the hell?" Uh, and then out of did a charge, got fed up, put a smoke on, did a charge, got within 20,000 or whatever it was, I can't remember now. And all of a sudden, she just started tearing Rish apart. Especially once one of those and that it seems to be only Achilles heal.
You take out AB turret, you win the game. What do you mean?
>> My damage wasn't that bad.
>> Yeah. Can I tell Can I get back to your damage?
>> No, you can't. And I think part of it is it's because of the bridge and just the overwhelming amount. I mean, I've seen ships sink with a uh like 48% efficiency.
>> Yeah.
>> I don't think I don't think it was the flooding. I think it was just the fires and the amount of destroyed >> was basically just the bow >> at that point. Wasn't a matter at the end of the day. It was going to >> Well, like I said, when we started this battle out, I realized I was still outside my killing range and and he was taking those plunging fire uh hits to me. And once I closed that range, I just overwhelmed him with those secondaries.
>> Yeah, >> those six inches were just distracting a lot of damage control parties, >> causing fires.
>> But it was a good fight, Dirty. You had me worried.
>> Yeah, well done. Well tried, but yeah, not today. All right, another what if ship win. Really good one. I enjoyed that, viewers. And it was good to see Dirty coming back and almost doing it, but against against he did the same with Iowa. He didn't quite manage it. So, it's nice to see a good try. That's it, viewers. We'll see you for the next What If.
