The 10 News Weather Authority from the JEES Weather Center.
>> Good afternoon everybody. I'm meteorologist Edward Shaw. Looking outside right now, pretty rainy at Virginia Tech. Relatively calm though given classes are out Memorial Day weekend. Overall though, a very overcast and rainy day for most of the state as we're dealing with that low pressure system that's brought in this rainfall, but we're also dealing with the cold air wedge in place that's keeping it here within our area. As we go throughout the week, we could see a few showers and thunderstorms here by the middle of the week with the warmer conditions coming in. But as we get later on, we could briefly clear up here Thursday and Friday, making for a little bit of a calmer and drier end to the week for chances of rain return later on for the weekend and possibly thereafter. As for right now though, again, very overcast.
You see that rainfall moving, starting to move into the Ron Oak Valley. Few other showers further out to the west and some further up to the north as well. Very scattered within the area.
And this is going to be the trend here for the next several days as well.
Although we could factor in a few thunderstorms as well given the fact that we'll have temperatures run a little bit warmer here in the coming days. Later on tonight, we're going to start seeing that rainfall be limited further to southside. It fizzles out by early tomorrow morning and then we start becoming a little bit more isolated in nature in terms of rainfall going into Tuesday. 76° by noon. But that isolated nature for some of these cells means we're going to increase the chance for thunderstorms as they'll have a little bit more energy to themselves. And any area that ends up seeing some sunshine, be more susceptible to thunderstorm development in the next few days with that daytime heating aspect. Wednesday morning, 70° overall, still pretty isolated in terms of rainfall development. But as we get throughout the day on Wednesday, we're going to have temperatures get into the 80s, but we'll end up seeing more thunderstorms develop once again for your Wednesday before possibly clearing out Thursday and Friday. Rainfall over the fa past 5 days has certainly been needed within the area. And we've seen a few areas get isolated amounts that are much greater than these numbers just based on some thunderstorm development. Most of the region towards parts of Lynchburg, Bedford, down into Alta Vista, and even parts of Danville likely have a little bit higher totals in some areas just given the overall factor of some of those thunderstorms that popped up a few days ago and dropped heavier rainfall totals within the region. As for what this is going to mean for the drought monitor, it should very well mean that we have a little bit of an improvement here once the new monitor comes out by Thursday. But we're not quite done with the rainfall yet. Still looking at some rainfall coming in for the next few days and that will certainly help out these drought conditions within our area.
Highs today, Rona getting up to 77, Danville 79, South Boston about 80 and Lynchburg at 77 as well. We look ahead to the next seven days with temperatures getting to pretty seasonable numbers here for this time of year as we'll be in the low 70s getting up into the low 80s here by the middle of the week.
Again, isolated shower chance Thursday and Friday, but otherwise mostly dry.
And then we go into the weekend with a few more shower and thunderstorm chances and temperatures in the 70s.
