NFL teams use a phased OTA (Organized Team Activities) structure where Phase 1 focuses on strength and conditioning, Phase 2 introduces the first round of scheme installation, and Phase 3 provides additional installation opportunities before training camp, allowing players multiple chances to deeply understand the team's offensive and defensive systems.

Aaron Glenn OTA Press Conference (5/28) | New York Jets追加:
Good morning.
I'm going to start off uh with a couple of things before we get into questions.
Uh yesterday we signed a Younghoe uh kicker. Uh he'll be part of the uh kicking competition.
Um two other things of injuries. Uh Cade, all right, he's a Cade York. Uh he has a little groin and um he won't be practicing this week, but he'll be working stuff back in uh next week. Um and then Saquon Barkley Saquon Barkley had a minor procedure, so he won't be out of practice today. He had a minor procedure. Uh something that he dealt with and we knew about, right, going into his last year of college and he dealt with it during rookie mini camp.
And we want to make sure we get it done right after rookie mini camp. So he'll be ready to go during training camp.
Um other than that, it was good to back get back on the field yesterday. Uh special teams seem like they just um they got right back at it on how they operate at the end of the season. Uh so I was happy about that. And obviously offense and defense uh two um we're working on our two different schemes. All right, so uh the guys are diligently working through that. Uh they're doing a good job. Still have a ways to go. Um but man, we're looking forward to every time we get a chance to get on the grass keep continuing to working on that. So any questions?
>> What um can you tell us the body part with Saquon Barkley?
>> Uh groin.
>> Groin?
>> Yeah.
Well, hernia.
>> Hernia, okay.
>> Is there um is there anyone who failed to clear injured who still isn't ready to to practice this spring at all?
>> You know what? I don't think so. I think so. We've um we had a 100% participation yesterday, which is good. Um so it's been good. It's been good through all through our phases.
>> How's the How's attendance for uh for OTAs?
>> Uh been good. Like I said, we had 100% um yeah yesterday. And I would say phase two, we averaged around 95% that in phase one around 90%. So, the guys have been in it. Um and it's been really good.
>> How important was it to get that contract done with Bruce?
>> Uh extremely important. Um cuz some guy that that somebody we wanted to be here.
Um I've talked about it for a while how good of a player he is.
Um so, to get that done and just get that out of his mind so he can just go play. Um that's always a good thing.
>> It seems like Bruce is really excited to play with Geno. I know it's stay tuned with OTAs, but what have you What are you making of that dynamic?
>> Well, those guys worked out together in in Florida uh quite a bit. So, there was already uh a relationship there.
Um so, those guys getting a chance to talk. Um obviously not talking through scheme because, you know, the guys are just now getting it, but um just getting a chance to know each other. I think that had a lot to do with it. So, um again, looking forward to those guys continuing to work together.
>> What have you observed on about Geno in regard to like leadership and the way he's acclimating with other players?
>> Yeah, if you watch him in the huddle when you watch him in the huddle today, man, you will see he's very um he commands the huddle uh very well. Um he makes sure that everybody knows exactly what's going on when it comes to the play call. Um and then once he breaks the huddle, man, he makes sure everybody explodes out of the huddle and gets them lined up. And then his ability to see exactly what's going on and try to make the play calls with his protection calls and things like that, identifying the mic. Um uh he's very commanding and you'll see that uh when it comes to that. So, that what shows up like from yesterday like really well.
>> Did you know him before that? I mean, I know you knew Did you have any type of relationship with him before that?
>> Yeah. Yeah, actually um when we drafted I was scouting here.
He wasn't in my area, but um Like that was my first time actually getting a chance to really talk with him.
And just the fact of how he's grown from that time to now, man, is outstanding.
So, and he's still he's still growing, you know, even being in the league as long as he has. And he'll tell you that. But I think that's for anybody, but that was my only time having that that like conversation with him with that with that time.
>> How has he grown?
>> Um his ability one to command the huddle, his his real like true understanding of protections, and how to make sure he protect himself in that aspect.
And also his leadership ability also.
Uh Listen, just just just by the way that I operate, just let my influence show leadership other than like really trying to talk it through with everybody.
>> How has Garrett looked?
>> Garrett looks good. He looks really good. I mean, he's he's typical Garrett, so that doesn't surprise me how he's going out there operating.
>> Was he full go right away? I mean, he had you know, last year last year >> He's getting all of his reps. Yep, he's getting all of his reps.
>> Did you sense a relief with him even after going through the knee issues last year only playing seven games? Could you Could you just sense a relief?
>> Yeah, I think that's with any player. Um I mean, obviously no one wants to be hurt, but when you are hurt, it just seems like you're distant from the team for the most part because you're in the lock you're in the the training room getting treatment while everybody else is doing things to get ready for a game. So, mentally that can mess you a little bit, you know, um But I think he's done a good job of making sure he got himself ready to play.
Um he's been doing a good job out there.
>> The team has made a lot of changes on defense and especially the secondary.
What made you bring Cisco back?
>> Um well, obviously he had the injury last year also.
And we thought highly of him, you know, when we we signed him last year.
Um I mean, we listen, we think he's a guy that can come in and compete, you know, and and play for us. So, obviously he has good range, has good ball skills.
Um I know in Jacksonville things didn't go the way that he wanted, you know, so um we still believe in him and we're looking forward to him going to compete and and and try to earn a starting job.
>> How important is the third phase considering the new installations on both sides of the ball and how many new faces you have there?
>> Yeah, well well critical. Man, let me explain a little bit um just because you asked about the installation. Let me explain a little bit how that goes with us.
Um So, we start off first round of installations in phase two. Um I'm a huge believer in phase one. Uh the players come in and I just want them thinking on man, just strength and conditioning training. That's it. So, it's almost like, you know, how some guys be away from the facility and they do that. I want them to think in that aspect and I think that what gives us a chance to draw, you know, many guys here because man, that's all I want them thinking about phase one strength and conditioning. Going into phase two, we're still thinking about strength and conditioning, but that's when the installation comes in and that's the first round of installation. And we throw a lot of those guys. It was three weeks of everything that we doing when it comes to the system. And then phase three, we actually start right back over again with the installation. So, what the players they get phase two the installation, phase three the installation, then we'll come back with training camp, they get the installation again. So, that'll be three times they get a chance to really dig deep in what the scheme is.
>> All right, so since we talked to you last, New York's become a bit of a basketball town. Um have you noticed any of that and is there any >> Yeah. Yeah, it's hard not to notice it and >> What do you glean from it for your team?
>> I I tell you what, um that is a gritty gritty team and it's hard to be a gritty team without gritty players.
And it all starts with the point guard.
And I mean, you could tell that the leadership, um the fight, um everybody follows that. And it's easy to follow that. And he's a guy, and I continue to say this, that that leadership really comes down to one word, and that's influence. And you, like, you really see the influence that he has, and it's not always verbal.
There's a lot of just what he do and how he operates, so um man, pulling for those guys. I really am. Um cuz they play their ass off, you know, and it it it it's it's it's fun to watch, and it's good to see.
>> So, we talked about the players and just kind of where they at, but where um how how do you feel like you've grown in coming into your second OTA?
>> Man, in in a in a number of ways, um from a head coach perspective. And obviously decision-making when it comes to uh surrounding yourself um with the right people. Um man, of making sure like everything is detailed out. You know, it's not that that we didn't that I didn't do it last year, but man, I've just been like meticulous on those things. Um making sure that every practice that we have, there's a reason behind it, and then explaining that not only to coaching staff, but also to the players of what we're trying to do. Um obviously there's rules going into phase three, but um I want those guys to know exactly why we're on the field and how we're going to operate on the field and what we want to come away with, and that's in every every practice going into phase three.
So, I've grown in that manner.
>> What do you want to see this week uh and in the coming days and weeks in order to feel like everything's on the right track?
>> Um well, I would say this, that we have a ways to go.
I know that. Um I just want to see improvement every day.
That's basically it. If we're doing that, we're on the right track.
>> With Pons, I know you said he played inside and outside.
What's the game plan in terms of getting him there? Is he going to do both right away, or are you going to break him in at once?
>> Yeah. Yeah, here's what we found out in phase two going through the installations.
When you start to ask him questions about the responsibilities inside and outside, he's quick to give you answers. That number one tells you that mentally he can pick those things up. So now, how does he do that you know in live action?
So now, we start him out at nickel, see how he operates. Then we'll put him on outside maybe today and see how he operates there. Let's just see if he can continue to handle that because it sometimes is different than doing it in the classroom than doing it on the field. So, we'll be able to see that as we go through these practices.
>> Hey, last one. At quarterback, is there an open competition for the backup job or or between those three guys or do you have like a a packing order?
>> It is an open competition. Um I mean obviously Geno's our our one. Um Bailey, he was our he was our two, you know, so but that that that can change as we go through uh these uh practices.
So, um but that's how we started out yesterday.
>> Thanks everybody.
>> All good?
Thanks y'all.
