Lenovo legion 5 coming On with no picture - How to force Vcore on RT3664, how to program IT8227EAdded:
Hello. So, we are back and this time we have a nice laptop to repair. This is a Lenovo Legion Ryzen 7 and Radon graphics. The problem with this one pressing the power button and the laptop is coming on but no picture on the screen basically dead. With uh most of the gaming laptops, there are only two faults.
one it's actually main power being shorted by a faulty MOSFET or a shorted capacitor then the second fault is actually the leptocoming you know picture from this category you have a bunch with I will say most of them the CPU and you have the rest of them uh with BIOS issues so this job is coming from um local repair shop and um I told them you know all what I can do is to try a BIOS. If it's working is mean it was a BIOS. If it's not working, it's a dead CPU.
Now, let's uh quickly open the laptop and uh let's have a look inside.
And the laptop it's open. Yeah, it's nothing to check if you ask me. No, it's nothing what I can check. Maybe I will check the 5 volts, but when you have a 45 volts, you have some weird issues like coming on or rebooting and stuff like that.
So, let me take out the heat sink. So we can access the BIOS chip I made on the past videos with same Lenovo Legion writing the BIOS. The laptop worked fine.
Uh if I remember that was a job where actually the customer made a Windows update and the laptop died here and it's kind of obvious on that case you do have a BIOS issue. We have a BIOS battery here. Let's unplug the BIOS battery.
main battery and the heat sink. It's out.
Yeah, definitely someone uh check here before.
And now we have access to the BIOS. But before that, let me inspect the motherboard a little bit just to be sure, you know, no one cause some damage here.
And when I'm inspecting motherboard, I'm looking for this uh driver which is the CPU power supply drivers.
Then I'm looking for the MOSFETs because if you have like a shorted MOSFET then definitely you'll have a dead CPU.
Then you have the CPU. We are looking for sign of liquid metal.
and it's looking good.
Then the GPU, same thing.
Then the CPU uh power supplies and the VRAM power supplies more important.
And they look like no one work here actually.
So yeah, everything is looking fine.
Uh the biochip looks like no one uh use clamps or resolder the biochip you know just quickly let's check the coils so the CPU coils you have like 12 ohms 6 ohms 6 ohms they all are six so all these power supplies are on the parallel this is the second V core and it has to be like double So we have like 13 ohms.
Then you have the 5 volts. Then you have the 3.3 and the RAM memory.
And this one is fine. The VRAM 39 is looking good. The GPU, the GPU, you have like 0.4 ohms. No, you have 0.4, right? But the probes are 0.3. So the GPU has 0.1 ohms. And that's how a good GPU is looking like. Yeah, it's looking like it's shorted, but it's not. Then this coil is fine. This one is fine. And this one is fine. Yeah.
Then you have a tiny coil here.
And this one has like 15 ohms.
Okay. Overall, it's looking good. RAM memory can be a RAM issue. Can be.
So, I'm going to take out the customer RAM and I'm going to use my one my RAM. The BIOS battery reset the BIOS.
Let's test it one more time.
Pressing the power button, the laptop is coming on.
But the CPU is cold.
Wait, actually nothing is coming on. One second. Definitely this is not a dead CPU key. So the left of it is on.
We have no V core, right? Yeah. So we have no V core. No. 5 volts present.
3.3 present.
This coil is not on.
This coil is not on.
Chip says 0.7.
Um this is the charging coil. Then here we have 1.8 and of course the GPU is off.
Okay. So the question is why do we have no VR?
If it will be a Intel I will say it's a Emmy region issue but this is AMD can be a bias issue.
Yeah, can be uh what we are checking on this ship.
We're checking the 5 volts if it's present. So here we have five 5.1. You can see on the screen. Yeah. So this ship has power. In this case, we are moving straight to the bias. Let me grab the programmer. So here you have the programmer.
Great. Let's find a bias file. on the bias file. I just I put the you know the left model number and I can see it.
Yeah, clearly this is the board and here we have BIOS.
So actually we have more than that.
We have the GPU BIOS and we have the main BIOS laptop turning only without picture.
Okay. Okay.
Let's try to find another one.
Then someone request a bios for this one.
Then we have a main guy we dealing with bios and stuff and he posted here the bin.
Uh I will get this one and I'm going to write this one.
Great.
Fantastic. So, let's open the rebel frog.
Let's detect the chip.
And the chip is detected. I'm not going to read the whole bias. No.
And this is the bias, right? Open.
And let's write the bias.
Great. Let's wait. Let's wait and see.
Our Discord is the perfect place for uh you know people repairing laptops and not only not only finishing erasing and now it's programming.
Finishing programming. Hopefully I I don't get the error here.
Oh yeah, we got an error.
Well, it is what it is. Let's check.
Yeah, for some reason the bias cannot be verified.
Plug in the battery. All we need that we need a hot CPU. Pressing the power button.
You know the CPU is not hot.
The CPU is not hot. So we have to write that bias to be sure it's right properly. So what I'm going to do, I'm going to plug the battery and write the bias one more time.
Let's try one more time. Uh, custom voltage 1.9 actually 2 volts. Yeah, let's do it one more time.
programming nearly finished. I'm curious about verifying it's working. Yeah. Rising the voltage, it will always do the trick. Yeah.
And it's all done. Perfect. So, what do you think it will work or not? That's my question.
Let's see.
Unplugging the battery.
Plugging back the battery.
Good.
Pressing the power button. And the laptop is coming on.
Now it's a cool CPU.
Why we have a cold CPU?
Yeah, the CPU is cold.
Okay, let's focus on the CPU driver.
So, the CPU driver, it's RT3664.
And this is the chip.
Yeah. 4.2 phases.
Let's save it.
Open. And yeah, now we have So what what this ship is doing, this chip is providing power to the CPU to different uh two different um Vores.
We're calling Vores, two different power supplies, but the power delivered is depending on the frequency. Yeah.
And this is the chip.
We are looking for the enable pin.
Enable pin is not enough because this chip is speaking with a chipset.
But that's that's what I we can check.
So this is the internal schematic.
Possible this shim need to be programmed. I don't know. And we have enable check here. Ean. Then we have some power. Good stuff here. Then we have this. We have to check VCC. DVD.
VCC.
Okay.
and DVD external driver power supply input voltage detection pin.
So pin 46 46 40 41 42 43 44 45 46 here and here we have 3.6 volts.
I'm not sure if I'm happy with this voltage.
So, I'm assuming here it's a divider.
Here is the input and the input is 16 volts.
Okay. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Let's see.
I think it's fine.
Uh DVD.
Yeah, DVD. Check here. Yeah. Yeah, we have a we have a divider. It's fine.
There you have VCC. But if I remember, we check the VCC. But let's check one more time.
Pin number 28.
27 28. This one and this one has 5.1.
Yeah, it's fine.
Then we have the enable pin. Pin number 37 39 8 7 which is this one, right?
And here we have zero volts from some reason.
Why we have zero volts here? 37. Yeah.
So this chip is not enabled.
Uh so what I'm going to do I'm going to enable the the chip. Of course.
Of course that's what I'm going to do.
3.3 a little bit of current. So coming with 3.3 here here and it's taking like 20 milliamps but not sure if we have any output voltage just because you you are missing like a enable uh signal that doesn't mean that's the only problem and on the check that on the CPU we have 0.7 so I'm checking on the CPU So that's how you enable the CPU voltage. You can see. So I'm checking exactly here. Where where here I'm checking exactly here.
So I'm happy with what I'm seeing.
But that doesn't mean it will work. It will work only if it's a enable issue.
Uh and that's the only problem. If you have like a firmware issue and nothing is getting enabled, nothing then it's a different pool. So, what I will do, I'm going to solder a wire. Enable this ship manually.
But we don't have to, right? No.
Let's uh try a trick. Yeah, let's try a trick.
So, powering on the laptop. The laptop it's on. And what I will do? Yeah, this is dodgy. You're right.
This is dodgy.
What I will do?
I said here we have 3.8. Yeah, who cares? 3.8 3.3 about the same, right?
Connecting this here and we have zero.
No, it's it's it's pulling down.
is pulling down my my power rail. This one. So 3.8 touching here and we have zero. No, we can't do it.
That sucks. Okay, let's solder a wire there. So from what I see here, actually that pin is holded down by the AC chip.
Most likely the AC chip. So that's how you check if uh you know if you have a problem with this chip or with anything related to the power to the CPU you enable manually the chip. If that's the only problem let's say okay that pin it's dead on the AC chip and that's the only problem you can bring this enabled signal from let's say a power supply from like big 3.3 power supply. I'm getting that signal and I'm enabling this uh uh this chip. So you can do it. You can go around if that's the only problem.
Yeah. Okay. So the wire is solder. Now let's see. So what we need?
We need 3.3 from the power supply.
We need ground from like here or from here.
Yeah, that's good.
We need plus and check that it's taking some taking some current.
Plug in the battery.
pressing the power button and now the CPU is not getting hot. That mean doesn't have clock.
So you see the problem is not only the enabled signal. No, it's a chain.
It's a chain. When everything is fine, I'm going to start this power supply.
This one, this one, this one. I'm going to bring the enable signal here. Enable signal on the Yeah. Yeah, I can feel it like warm.
Yeah, it is warm because voltage is present. The GB is called the GB is not enabled. That's a different story with the GPU.
So if we are checking now, yeah, if we are checking now the voltage on the on the CPU, yeah, the voltage on the CPU is 0.8. Check there you can see it.
The second V core is present 0.8.
So we do have voltage on the CPU. The GPU GP is not enabled. Probably the RAM is not enabled.
Let's check here. You have zero.
You have zero.
Now the RAM is not in 0.3 volts on the RAM.
Wait one second.
0.3 on the RAM.
Here we have 0.3.
I mean, I'm not sure if I'm happy with this 0.3 because we enable the CPU, right?
Because if we are deleting the CPU power then we have no voltage on the RAM. No nothing no voltage.
So this 0.7 is coming back through the memory controller back to the RAM memory. Yeah. So we don't have RAM voltage.
We don't have the CPU enable pin.
If I will be to place a bet, it will be the AC chip. And if I will have time, probably I will uh replace and reprogram the AC chip.
So not sure what should I do. I'm going to remove this wire because obviously this is not the problem here.
The enable signal is missing because the other signals are missing also.
Let me speak with the computer business here and I will come back. If I'm not coming back, you still learn something. You learn how to check and enable the CPU power supplies.
See you soon.
Let's take the board out.
So, this can be a waste of time.
can be if it's a faulty chipset and the chipset is not sending the okay back to the EC chip the AC chip it will not start the the other things on the board so it is possible to be a waste of time but we cannot check if the ECG is speaking with the chipset and that's something we can't check so all what we can do and the chipset is part of the CPU and all what we can do is to replace the the EC chip or replace and reprogram or even taking the EC chip out and reprogram the EC chip. I prefer to replace it.
And the board it's out.
And yeah, we do have the AC chip there.
Let's inspect the board quickly.
So the AC chip is looking fine. And I can't see any issue. Here we have the BQ chip.
Here we have some kind of keyboard controller for the RGBs.
Here we have a fuse. I can't believe what that fuse is doing here. No, I mean I don't remember to see this fuse before. Oh, the backlight fuse, right?
Yeah. Yeah, the back fuse is good.
We have the first MOS for second MOSFET and you of course they are good.
No liquid damage, power button.
Everything is looking fine.
Uh, I will say let's take the chip out.
Let me use some captain tape and the AC chip. It's out.
Yeah, number one there.
Let's quickly apply some solder.
Looking good, right? Yeah. Uh cleaning nicely. So, we have nothing there.
This board is ready for a new chip.
Let's try to find another chip then.
This one it's 8227 E 100 256.
Okay.
I have 192, but it's not the same, right? No, it's not.
Okay, it's not this one.
Check here. I can't believe how lucky we are. I have like a brand new here. Brand new chip. Check that 256.
Brand new. Definitely is brand new.
We're going to charge money for like a brand new chip. Yeah, it will be our secret, right?
Yeah.
You know what they're saying?
Some doors should stay shut. Yeah. So, it will be our secret. But looks like a brand new one, huh?
But one more time, the AC chip we took it out is not shorted. Yeah, it's just not working. Can be good. Yeah, we have a bridge there.
Here we have a bridge.
And I can't take the bridge out. Of course not.
Okay, the bridge is gone.
The chip is clean. I think we can put the chip onto the programmer and program the chip.
Yeah, let's do it.
Great. Let me grab the programmer pin number one here. And that's fine.
Great.
Unless we put a chip here with a pin number one here.
like that.
Great. Now, let's program this chip.
I got the the the EC firmware from our Discord. Yeah. If you search here on the search bar and it's not there, you just ask you ask for the firmware. We're like 25,000 people there. So, someone has the firmware. As you can see here, we got a firmware for Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9. More than we ask. Yeah. So, I downloaded the firmware. Let's open the program. So, we are fine. We have to open the the firmware.
And now we can write the firmware.
Yeah.
Yeah. Everything is fine. So now we have to we have to wait.
It is working.
But the question is it will work the board. It will work.
We're going to find out together.
Is finishing writing then it will be verifying.
And yeah it is verifying. Check there.
Perfect. So everything is fine. Huh?
Let's see. Let's see.
Now is the moment. So we have the chip and now we have to solder the chip back.
Lenovo.
Let's go under the microscope.
You know what? I'm going to tell you what I never did. I never solder this easy chips with solder iron.
So what about if we are soldering the chip? solder iron and usually I'm using like hot air but the people said no sir in solder with solder iron it can be interesting right so the people gave me this soldering would like a challenge something like okay s you can't do it with a solder let's see I can't do it because it's too long it's taking too long with the solder you have to solder each pin I mean, I got it. Indeed, it's more precision when you're solder pin by pin.
No freaking way. We screw it up.
Okay, so that one is fine. Let's solder here a pin here.
Yeah, now the chip is solid. Now we can solder every pin like that.
And then you have bridges. Yeah.
And the chip is kind of solder. We have bridges.
Who said to solder with solder iron, huh?
Who said that?
Yeah, that's why I don't like the solder iron.
You end up with bridges.
I mean yeah it is safe here not sure what should I say so everything pin is solder I think every pin is solder let's check yeah Perfect.
Yeah, perfect. So, no pin. What is that?
That's a bridge.
Okay. Now, the thing with this, you have to pay attention because you can have a bridge here down or you can have a bridge here up.
And the one up it will be ignored by your eye.
Yeah, it looks fine.
So, it will work or not? That's my question.
What do we have to plug in? We need a power. No, the power button is on the board. We need a battery. So, if the battery is plugged in Yeah.
And we are pressing the power button.
The CPU is getting hot.
The board is coming on.
No.
No freaking way.
He said that chief said, right?
Ah, I'm such an idiot.
I mean, I do have like some pot I'm taking when I'm repairing something.
Okay, let's uh let's do it. I try like few more biases and stuff, but yeah. So, pressing the power and it is coming on.
And now it's working every time. No freaking way. Yeah, now it's getting hot. What I did, I bend the board. I bend the board and I press the power button and now it's getting hot.
Can't believe. Can't believe. Can't believe why I didn't try that from the beginning.
Why? Why? When I know exactly they have this kind of problem.
Just tell me why. That's that's all what you have to do. Tell me why.
Why didn't push the CPU down from the beginning? Okay. For some reason, my OBS go on the pose mode and I didn't record what I did, but I did what I'm doing usually. Liquid rosing under the CPU and coming with a hotel around the CPU. So, I replace the thermal paste.
Let's put it all back together.
It's not necessary to be like bad things on the CPU.
Can be like a crack solder. Can be a crack solder ball. Can be a solder which is out from the CPU. can be a small particle between two pins of the chipset or the CPU can be some internal thingy on the CPU can be a lot of things but that's the reason why we are giving warranty giving warranty it's working fine it's not working then you see after okay all good let's uh test it one more time because I tested radio on the video, but was post.
Uh, the laptop should start straight away because we have the BIOS battery plugged in and we have pictures. H, what do you think about that?
Huh, it's working.
Fans are spinning.
Yeah, we have the same message because we don't have a empty drive.
No, it was no empty drive here. No, let me power off the laptop.
And we have normal startup.
And yeah, it's not in the Windows. Strange, right?
Because it replaced the BIOS AC chip.
It's not asking for the bit local key.
