These Bees Were So Mean We Had To Do This At NightAdded:
Good evening, my fellow bee nerds. I am all suited up, ready to party. It's the end of the day today. I just am finished up with one out of a meter box. Those ones are kind of boring, so I didn't think you'd want to see that one, but you're going to want to see it. This one we've got. There's a reason I'm showing up in my beuit with gloves on because these bees are spicy. So far that we know, level 10. I was out there to check it out and I tried to sneak around and look and they were already chasing me down, not even doing anything.
Thankfully, uh, I had my veil on when I went to scope it out. But the workers at this park, they have been chased by the bees and stung and it's getting out of control. It's in this big tree hollow.
What else is new? I've got my chainsaw and I'm going to do this one at night.
That way, nobody's around. It's at a historical site where there's lots of tours and stuff. So, it's shut down at night and the bees won't have such a big radius to attack. Not that anybody will be around, but just taking all the precautions that we can think of to make sure it's safe. But enough talking.
Let's go ahead and show you guys what this thing looks like. Zipper check. Is my veil closed? Okay, it's closed.
Zippers. Yes. No holes in the suit.
Okay, good to go. Now, the first thing I want to do is approach with some smoke.
I don't even want to walk up on these ladies without smoke because I have noticed the last time I was here and I did that, they were already coming after me. So, smoke first. This thing is gassed up, oiled up. I've got my smoke going. Okay. Okay. Ready? Ready. Three, two, one.
Where are they? Over here.
Oh my gosh, they're crazy.
No, I'm just kidding. I got the jump on them, suckers. Of course, they're not crazy. You can see where they've tried to kind of stuff the hole shut. That ain't going to work. It's foam. They'll just chew right through that. All right.
I think there were a couple different entrances if I recall correctly. Let's look around the backside here. What is this? Like an old box spring or something. You can see some expansion foam there, too. So interesting. They've definitely been battling this one for a while. But is this it? I thought there were two entrances when I was out here.
Maybe this is it. It just kind of looked like this was an entrance over there. Or is it? Let's see. Yeah, it is. Okay, so we've got an entrance here. Pretty hard to notice, but it's there. Okay, got the smoke going. Got the chainsaw ready. So, let's get to cutting. I'm going to try and do as little damage as possible, but I still got to do some damage. But these trees are pretty resilient, so they don't seem too concerned. The key with these is just figuring out where to cut it open. Obviously, this is a big gnarled part of the tree that's going to be hard to cut into. So, I've got to look and think where might the cavity be that they're living in. Uh, it's usually going to be kind of in the center mass.
So, we'll have to look at maybe cutting here, maybe cutting over there, but taking a look with the flashlight will help. That does not look like the closest doorway to the main cavity. So maybe it's more over here. I finally got an agitated bee, the first one so far, which is so funny cuz they were angry when I was out here the first time. All right, still not readily apparent where the actual cavity is that they are living in. That is not a straight shot into that cavity. Neither is that entrance. So look at this uh tree, too.
I mean, we're talking about a sizable trunk here. Where do I open it up? Do I start where there's evidence of somebody trying to seal it up before? Or do I come around the backside? Start here?
Where is this thing? And uh look, it's still big all the way up here. Could even go up there. Wowzer. Okay, you know what might be fun? I say fun. Is cutting right here just to make a slit inside and see if there's a channel right there. if there's a hollow little skinny channel and if bees come out of there cuz that's what happens is queens like to run up that hollow section into the tight little channel as far as they can go and I end up usually having to cut some kind of slit anyway. So, let me start there.
Why is this thing already cooking?
Holy smokes. Let's get some more water.
Chain does look a little Oh, yeah. It's loose. I tightened it, but maybe it's not tight enough. BRB. Well, guys, that thing's cooked. Really didn't want to have to do this, but I do have to go to the Homie Depot right now and get a new bar. I might as well get a new chain while I'm at it. I just sharpened that one, but whatever. Out of all the jobs that I don't need time adders on, this is definitely at the top of the list, but oh well. So, at Home Depot, I grabbed a brand new bar and even a new chain. And wouldn't you know it, as soon as I got back to the property, I was locked out with nobody around. Well, guys, I've tried everything. I tried tripping whatever the sensor I can't even tell where the sensor is, but I have to squeeze through.
Yeah, I got to squeeze through. I've tried everything. I've got some heavy duty steel tools that I was dragging across this area trying to trip the sensor, but no luck. I tried calling all my people. I tried calling whatever number was listed over there. I don't know even know if it's part of the same thing. There was a button on the back side of that. I tried that. Now I'm resorting to walking all the way down to see if the one lady that might still be here is here. If not, I think I either leave. My stuff's down there, by the way. Or I grab one of their golf carts.
I bring it up here. I load up my equipment and then drive the golf cart down there. I've already got most of the equipment down there. So, that's what I'm gonna do. If I see a free golf cart, I'm taking it. And I'm heading back up to the truck and I'm getting my stuff down there. I hope they're not mad at me for hopping through the fence. They can't care, right? Okay, let's find a golf cart. Luckily, the on-site residence caretakers are over there.
And there was an uphill shortcut.
There's my truck. And thank goodness.
Nice guy. He's going to come trip the gate for me.
Yes. Okay, cool. I didn't have to steal anything.
Our bee rescues take us all over the county every single day. Since we're constantly on the move, we're often hopping on public Wi-Fi just to keep the business running. But those open networks are a huge risk. Anyone else on that same connection could potentially see our private data or passwords.
That's why I always have Surf SharkVPN running. It's a cyber security tool that effortlessly secures your online life.
It masks your IP address and encrypts your activity. So whether I'm in the north end of the county or down by the border, our business information stays private and much harder to track. It's not just for the road either. Surf Shark protects our entire household. It blocks trackers and helps us avoid those annoying discount scams. And because one account covers unlimited devices, every phone and laptop we own is protected under the plan. Keep your data secure no matter where the job takes you. Go to surf shark.com/mrsb or use code Mr. Mrs.B at checkout to get four extra months of Surf SharkVPN. They have a 30-day money back guarantee, so give it a try. Secure your digital beehive today.
Oh yeah, I got a cavity there. I felt the chainsaw dip right into it. We'll keep our eyes peeled if bees come out of that.
I think it's ready. Whoa.
I hear the peacocks freaking out.
They're I'm just kidding. They're not close, by the way. But they are on the property.
Lots of peacocks.
Oh, that was my mistake. I cut down where it should have got like that. Now we got a wedge, reverse wedge going on.
I know you guys are mad at me, but Oh yes. Check it out.
Bingo and banana peel.
They're so mad right now. Look at this.
Oo.
But yes, perfect.
The beehive is right there and it goes that direction. So, it's good that I made a cut over there. I'll open that one up, too. I'd rather have them calm cuz they're really mad right now. This is why I'm doing it at night when nobody's around on a Monday cuz no events on a Monday.
Oh my gosh, guys. It's been a while since I had bees this aggressive.
Wow. Okay, that was a struggle, by the way. I've got the second doorway open and it was a struggle to get it out finally though. And I hit the motherload. So, thank goodness I did get it out. It is officially time now that I've got such good access to start pulling the comb out and tracking down the queen. Let me tell you, when they're like this, you're pretty careful with how you bend and touch. That way, they're not pressing up against your beesuit. When you get the beesuit tight up against your skin, yada yada yada.
Let's see some beehive. Yeah. Come on.
One big piece, baby. Come off in one big piece. Whoa. Yeah. All right. They are mad. And that is why I'm doing it at night. I hate doing bee rescues at night. Absolutely hate it. But this is when it is warranted. You might ask, Jeffrey, why do you hate doing bee rescues at night? And I would say because the bees have a hard time navigating. They cling to me instead of grouping up with the rest of the bees cuz I'm warm and it generally is just hard to do everything when you're just using a flashlight. Oh, wo wo wo wo. Ah, don't fall off. Don't fall off. Maybe the queen's here. That would be so amazing. My gosh, I'd be so happy. Wo! I don't see her. Big group of bees, though. Big chunk of honey at the top, too. Got to be careful. That one feels like it wants to fall apart. Get the box a little closer. Come on, ladies. Flick them away. I want to say they're settling down a little bit. Just a little bit. Not a lot. This is good cut placement, if I do say so myself. I'm glad that I cut where I did, cuz this is giving me the best access. Oh, lots of bees on this one. Can we catch the queen? Is she here? No. Just so you guys know, the queen is going to go because uh her offspring is too spicy.
We're going to introduce a nice friendly offspring queen so that once they get set up at the new spot, they're going to be much more chill. Okay, let's speed this up.
Look at that chunk of honey back there.
Whoa. That is a serious chunk of honey.
Wow. Oh my goodness. That's going to be sticky. And then let's see over here.
Yep. You can see them kind of congregating up at the top there. I imagine the queen might be there. It's a little tricky to get to cuz you can see it hangs down. But what are you guys thinking? You liking the uh nighttime bee rescue?
Pretty cool. Or is it kind of hard to grasp what's going on? I feel like I'm doing a decent job of showing you guys.
So, let me know what you think. I kind of want to get the bees out before I pull that big old chunk of honey. That way, they're not getting all sticky. But this looks really soft, too. So, okay, let's try at least.
Guess who I found?
Big M E.
Never mind. It's a cockroach.
Okay, you can see. Sorry. Joking aside, um I've got most of the comb out. And what do we got here? Yep. Bees back there. Uh yeah, I got to get them. I think I can reach from this hole. Kind of reach and bend my elbow, grab some bees, start getting them in the box. This is what we've got so Oh gosh. Ah, I hate when the box gets sticky. We can see that's what we've got so far in the box. I don't think I've got the queen in there.
That'd be pretty lucky. But could have accidentally caught her without knowing.
Let's get back to it, shall we? Spicy stick bee kebab. Ooh, I feel a good handful right here. Ooh, yes. Bueno.
Yeah, there we go. That's a good handful. Into the box. Ooh, another good handful.
Hello, Mr. Drone. By the way, they were starting to make queen cells. So, this colony was actually planning on splitting in half soon, but they weren't filling them up yet. So, the queen wasn't laying eggs into those queen cells. Oo, another bee kebab. Just hoping to catch the queen randomly.
Here's a decent scoop.
into the box. I will say, what a big cavity, too. It's a large section of tree hollow for them to build their hive in. They could have filled that thing up, too. Would have taken them a while.
I see bees hiding way back in there.
Probably what used to be the old entrance on the other side down there.
See if I can get my hand back there, cuz there's a big ball of them. Can't quite get them. Another stick.
Spicy. Okay, here we go. Good scoop.
Good scoop.
I see a drone and bunch of workers, but no queen yet. I've got them moving around in there. So, I'm trying to see if I can spot the queen. See if I can get you guys a shot. See, I've got them moving around. Keeping my eyes peeled.
Maybe I'll just catch a glimpse of her.
That'd be nice. Okay, let's keep going.
Okay, guys. I actually want to make a cut right there because I can feel when I curl my hand all the way back up, I can feel that there's a thin spot right here and there's a bunch of bees that have crawled up there. So, not saying that's exactly where the queen is, but it's a really good spot to find her.
Oh, yeah. Yep. Some bees hiding in that little nook. Check out what else we've got going on. Got a big group over here at the entrance number two. Entrance number one. Yep. Plenty of bees over here, too. So, this is good. What I don't want is for bees to just suddenly be disappearing to never Neverland cuz then I'm like, "Oh, grudg. Where are they?" We have those ones back in there.
And I'm hoping that I can smoke them out and that they'll come out because they're just a little too difficult to get to at this point. Let's look around inside. See what we can see. There's a group there. And are they going up?
Not really. So, this is good. Okay.
Let's try to start driving them out and into areas where I can actually grab them. Like right here.
Okay, guys. Let's give you an update.
That seems really cleared out. I mean, I don't think the queen is in there anymore, unless she's kind of sneakily tucked into the entrance of this one, but I've got them pretty much all the way from the entrance. And over by entrance, too. I checked and the queen's not there. So, there is actually a pretty good chance that she is in the box. Bees have actually been walking up into the box. So, that's a good sign.
So, maybe I already have her in the box.
Now, we're looking for the queen.
Remember that. So, all these other bees, ignore them. We're just interested in finding the queen.
And it's a little crowded. So, maybe I'll give it a bump. But first, let's actually just kind of splat the corner there. Queen bees like corners. Now, I will say with these tree hollow jobs, the queen is often the very last bee to come out of the tree hollow. So having her already in the box would be amazing.
Not unheard of, but it's uncommon and it would be amazing. Okay, she wasn't in that corner. Let me go ahead and just bump them. These have been bumped. All right, use your fast eyeballs, people.
Try to find her.
if she's in here.
I haven't seen her. Not yet. I was really hoping she was in here. I kind of starting to think she is in here, but no, I'm not so sure. All right. Well, I don't see her, so we shall continue.
Kind of our last hope is over by entrance number one. So, there's a group here.
Do we see her? Guys, by the way, the bees are happily going into the box.
They keep walking over to the box, too.
So, I don't even need the queen on this one. Now that I've got all the bees cleared out of there, I'm perfectly happy with getting the bees without the queen and taking them away because we would just end up killing this queen and introducing a new one or just letting these guys merge with another colony.
But I cannot stand to lose the queen.
So, the search continues. We do have some just kind of scattered. I think this is our our last hope of finding her. It be in this group right here.
Unless Let's look around. Is there something I'm missing? Like over here?
No. No. Nope. I mean, you you definitely see a group of bees.
Oh, who's that? Who is that? Gotcha.
It's just a drone. By the way, if you're wondering, it's close to 10:00. It's not quite. And I'm still on it. But like I said, we do have the bees going into the box. So that's the important thing. And over by entrance number two, some happy bees, but the queen was not amongst them. So there's basically no bees in there now.
You guys, I'm kind of getting my hopes up a little bit because I peeled away some of the old bark inside here. And look, I see some bees. But I don't quite know how to get to that spot other than to cut a hole right there. I got to move the box, but I'm going to go ahead and do it. Hope people don't get mad at me for using a chainsaw at 10 o'clock at night, but actually houses are really far away from this spot. And I've got important things to do, like saving the queen.
Oh yeah. Oh, there's a sneaky group in here, guys. Come here. Check this out, guys. Do I find the queen after all?
After all of that. Can I please find the queen? Oh my gosh, they're crawling out of there fast.
Oh my gosh, is the queen going to come out of there? What a sneaky little spot.
Thank goodness those pieces of bark or wood inside there were rotted and peeled back easily cuz that made it a lot easier to expose. What a job this one was.
She's going to be the last one out.
Watch.
Just like I said, these tree hollow ones, the queen is often the last one out. Well, guys, I was really hoping with that last cut I made that I was on to something that the queen was just going to run out of there. But alas, no.
Unless unless she snuck right by me and went in the box, in which case, awesome.
But I'm not going to worry about it. You know why? Cuz it's 10:55 p.m. And I will say that because we saw queen cups in this colony, there's actually a chance that there was no queen right now. She could have actually vamooseed. Sometimes they'll take off when they know that their usurpion is imminent. Is that a word? Anyway, and I'm going to leave this wide open like that because it's less appealing than if I tried to close it up and the bees figured out a way in.
They'd love that. I was really holding out hope that I would catch the queen right at the end. But alas, here I am with a box full of bees and no queen.
Hold up, guys. Wait a second. I just got a call that there are more bees than normal hanging around this tree hollow.
So maybe the queen and a group of bees found a place to escape to. And now that it's broad daylight, they're moving around. So let's go check and see.
Can we find the queen? I hope so. Let's see what the commotion is all about.
Now, what do we got? Do we have Okay, those are the stragglers.
Definitely some stragglers.
You're wondering what's going on. Hold on. This guy made it sound like there were tons of bees hanging around.
This looks normal.
Yeah, this is this is definitely normal.
I got some of the cut up wood pieces.
Oh, hold on. There's a group over here.
Oh, let me squeeze down in there.
That is one of the pieces where the hive was attached to. Smells like the beehive. Oh, look. There's even a even a chunk of honey over here. Those are bees from the colony. Those are not robber bees. Actually, I know that I looked at this piece right before I left. I was like, is she here? And she was not here.
But that's not to say that she's not here. Oh gosh, they're not. They're really mad now.
There's a bee fully attacking the camera. Oh gosh.
What do we got?
Is the queen here?
Oh, these guys are still very mean. Look at that dangle.
Just gave it shake down onto the ground here.
There's still some over there, too. But let's see. Is the queen here? I'm going to guess she's not.
And if the queen is nowhere to be found, that is just going to reaffirm my theory that they were in between queens. Pile of bees number one going in. We've got pile number two over there. Pile number three over there. See, they're just they're just running into the box. No queen in there, mind you.
That tells me they don't know where the queen is. They're just congregating together.
And they have uh decided that that is not where they want to hang out. That's nice cuz makes this easier. And in case you guys were wondering, there is zero action inside of here. By the way, that thing right there, that yellow thing is what the last bee guy used to kill this beehive, the previous one. That's like a pesticide thing. But oh my gosh, guys, I'm such an idiot. I'm so dumb. Okay, so a week ago, I came out here. I gave them a quote on that. And I did a meter box or sorry, a valve box situation right over there on the same property. And when I was doing it, I was like doing it suitless. They were a few day few days old. And I was like, they're still a little mean. And I got stung by one. And I was thinking, I bet they came from this tree hollow. And for some reason, I totally forgot that that was the case.
Or could be the case. I guess cuz it was a week ago. I totally forgot that colony was just a few days old.
Probably split from this one cuz they were aggressive. Got the queen from there. So, uh, duh. I think that's what was going on is they split in half. That queen moved into that meter box over there. I mean, this is speculation, right? I don't know 100%. But that's what I'm thinking happened. And they were just in between queens. They built a few brand new queen cells. They hadn't filled them up yet. Oh my goodness, guys. I think I may have solved the mystery. If you think I'm wrong, let me know. But I want to say thank you so much for watching. Don't forget to click like and subscribe. We'll catch you on the next one.
