This educational video demonstrates how understanding animal adaptations, behaviors, and physical characteristics can help solve mysteries about animal activities. The detectives use knowledge about specific animalsβsuch as cactus spines causing injuries, chinchillas releasing fur when startled, monotremes being egg-laying mammals, and hyenas' social structuresβto identify culprits and understand animal behavior patterns.

Huh? The paw prints stop here.
>> Sam, look. A cat. And she's surrounded by empty milk bottles.
>> We can sneak up on her if we stay nice and quiet.
>> So much for nice and quiet.
Stop right there. Milk thief.
>> Milk thief.
I wish. I keep trying to steal milk from those elephant seals, but every bottle I swipe is already empty.
>> Already empty?
>> Yep. It's gotten so bad I'm packing up and moving.
I got to find a new seal colony to get milk from.
>> But if you didn't steal the milk, any idea who did?
>> Beats me. But if I were you two, I'd ask the skewer. That bird loves stealing milk. Smell you later.
>> The skewer.
>> Skewers are seabirds that live near the coast. They're known to steal milk from elephant seals, too.
>> Sounds like we have our next suspect.
Come on.
>> We got to find that skewer soon, Sam.
These seal pups are getting hungrier and hungrier.
>> Well, except for that pup. Doesn't he look a little bit bigger than he did before?
>> The skewer.
>> Hey, stop that skewer.
>> Here, Sam. Half aboard.
>> Wa!
you.
Huh? Where'd he go?
>> Love you.
>> Hey, what are you doing?
>> Not again. Sorry.
Gotcha.
We did it. We got the milk. That Bob.
Hi, Bob. What's that buzzing?
>> We've got nobody. If I didn't know any better, I'd say you were being chased by a huge swarm of angry bees.
>> Sam, I GOT TO GO OUT. LOOK OUT.
>> They're gaining on us. What do we do?
I have an idea.
They're gone.
Another close call. Ow.
>> You okay, partner?
>> I'm fine. Just a little beasting.
>> Oh, no. That great news. Look, the stinger is still stuck in my hand. But there wasn't a stinger stuck on Penelopey's rear end, so that means the bee didn't sting her.
>> Did we just crack the case? Nope. We still don't know who stung Penelope. And now we're all out of suspects.
>> Don't worry, Kit. The most important clue has probably been right in front of us all along.
>> That's what Sam would say. A I wish he were here. He's the real master detective.
>> Careful, Kit.
>> Huh?
>> You were about to sit on a jumping choya cactus. Even just brushing up against one of these makes their spines come off. See, I've seen this kind of cactus before. But where? Whiskers. That's it.
I know what stun Penelope. Come on.
>> So, here's what happened, Miss Penelope.
>> You were walking along. Good afternoon.
Howdy, Sheriff.
>> Mhm.
>> And you brushed up against this cactus.
Little did you know, a cactus spine got stuck on your pants. You sat down and >> Oh, yeah. Ouch.
>> Here's your culprit, Sheriff. Still stuck where it stung poor Penelope. It was the cactus on the bench with the prickling spine. Oh, so that's what stone me.
>> You figured it out.
>> Another creature came close.
>> Wait, that's right.
>> Thanks for all your help, Barb. You know, Clay's always looking for a few good scorpions.
>> Thanks.
But I prefer sleeping in the daytime.
>> See you.
H. And so in the end, the most important clue was right in front of me all along.
The cactus.
>> Wow. Nice work, kids.
>> How about you? How was your day?
>> Well, after I helped finish those reports, all 9,000 of them, I started this really amazing book. A bluebird was eating berries, and when she turned around, they were all gone.
>> Aha! It was a badger who dug a tunnel with a steam shovel.
>> You're right. How do you know that?
>> Well, you just happen to have a master detective for a partner, and I've read that book before.
>> The chinchillaas are down there.
>> This dust spa is not looking very dusty.
>> Hey, you two.
>> Hello. I'm Agent Sam Snow. And I'm Agent Kit Casey.
>> Sorry, but the dust bar is closed. Can't you see we have a major problem here?
>> Don't worry, ma'am. We're from Clay and we're here to get to the bottom of this.
>> And we know how important your fur is. I don't like getting mine wet either.
>> Oh, it's the shine of your fur. The perfectly angled strands of hair. The scent of lemon.
Lemon grass.
>> How fabulous.
My name's Sheila. It's nice to meet someone else who really takes care of their fur.
>> Likewise, >> Sheila, we really need to get you all out of here. Come on, we can carry you.
>> I'm not going anywhere near that water.
Miss, >> what happened?
>> It's okay. When chillas get startled, they can furs slip. That means they release a clump of fur to escape.
>> Whoa, whoa, whoa. We don't want anyone losing their fur.
>> See, he gets it.
>> Kit, I think we'd better split up. I'll stay here and make sure the chinchillaas stay dry.
>> And I'll go up there and figure out where that water is coming from.
>> Sounds like a plan. Stay in touch.
>> So soft.
>> Aha. So, this is where the water's coming from. Better fill it up.
>> Sam, I just filled in a watering hole up here. Did that stop the water down there?
>> Yeah, it stopped it. Wait, another waterfall just started.
>> Another one? But that doesn't make any sense. There must be some other water source. I'll keep looking. Good luck.
>> Do I also detect a hint of lavender in your hair gel?
>> Well, sir, I would step back. You don't want to get >> I'm wet. The water got me.
>> You may never recover from this.
>> I'm done for. I'll catch a cold or worse, I'll stay wet forever. Doomed to walk this earth with soggy fur.
>> Now, now, don't panic. It was just a little drop. Cluebot, activate haird dryer mode.
We'll have you dry in no time.
>> Look, the oasis. And it's no mirage this time.
>> We're almost there, Leonard. Leonard, >> come on. Just a little bit further, >> kids. I don't think Leonard can make it much further. He needs some water to cool off now.
>> The sar is so hot. The sand is so hot.
Even the air is so hot.
>> The air? Why didn't I think of that sooner? The air around us has invisible water in it. Some desert beetles can pull that water right out of the air.
And with a simple machine, we can too.
>> Great. But do we have a machine like that?
>> No. But I think I can make one.
>> Hope you can build it on the go. Here comes the hawk.
>> Run.
>> Just try to keep him busy while I build this thing.
>> Glue bots. Go.
>> Circle him. Now zigzag and spin.
>> I'm not sure how long they can keep this up. That hawk looks hungry. I hope he at least seasons me properly. Nothing's worse than bland lungfish.
>> And done. It just needs a moment to pull some water from the air.
>> It's hurry.
>> You can't hurry science.
>> Got it. Open up, Leonard.
>> Ha! Watering hole. Here I come.
Missed me.
Too slow.
Missed me again.
>> Leonard, here he comes.
>> Get into the water.
>> Not today, you oversized pigeon.
Leonard, you made it.
>> It ain't a mud cocoon, but it'll do.
Thanks, you two. Happy to help.
>> Hey, is that a lungfish?
>> Would you look at that?
>> Cool.
>> Nice hat. Finally, some appreciation. I could get used to this.
>> Another creature case.
All right, creature case closed. It's officially way too hot for a snow leopard.
>> Well, here is my favorite way to cool off. CANNONBALL, >> KIDS. ACTUALLY, that feels pretty nice.
Woohoo!
>> Look around. This is a town for birds.
>> Uh, but you're a mouse.
>> That's not the point. I mean, what sort of scaly thing is he anyway? Some kind of lizard?
>> Actually, touittaraas aren't lizards.
They're a special species of reptile as old as the dinosaurs.
>> Well, he's certainly old. I'll give you that.
>> Wait, Uncle Tonyy's lived in my burrow for years, and he's never eaten a single egg. He couldn't be the one who did it, >> could he?
>> I mean, look at him.
>> I don't know.
to me.
>> Well, we could. I mean, who's to say?
>> Excuse me. Could we take a look at that shell? It might give us a clue.
>> I can tell it was bitten, but there's not enough shell here to tell us by what.
>> I think it's time to talk to that Touittara.
>> Can I help you?
>> We'd like to ask you some questions about the egg that got eaten. I got nothing to do with that. AND THAT'S THE TOUITTARA TRUTH.
>> But touittaraas are known to eat bird eggs.
>> Well, maybe in my younger days, I nibbled an egg or two, but now I couldn't, even if I wanted to. Take a look at these old chompers.
These days, all I can eat are teeny little worms. I like them nice and squishy.
>> What do you think, kid? Is Tony telling the truth? I mean, truth. I don't know.
His worn out teeth would make it hard to eat an egg, but not impossible.
>> He's still the most likely suspect, but we need more evidence.
>> We better keep a close eye on Uncle Tony.
>> How does he sit under that sun all day?
>> Two Ataras are mostly nocturnal. They rest during the day, but soon the sun will go down and he'll be out hunting for food.
Here he goes. Follow that toitara.
He's looking for something like eggs.
>> Hello.
>> Hi.
>> He's not too popular.
>> Not anymore. Anyway, >> he's coming this way. Hide.
>> Is he gone?
>> Yep.
>> And is this a prickly fair bush?
>> Yep.
>> Oh no, we cracked it.
>> No, Sam, it's starting to hatch.
>> A what a cute little thing. But what is it? A bird or a reptile?
>> Neither.
I think it's some kind of mammal.
>> I thought you said mammals don't lay eggs.
>> They don't except for platypuses. And this must be an akidna.
>> A what?
>> Akidnas are a special kind of mammal.
One of the only types that lay eggs.
Once baby akidnas hatch, they live in their mother's pouch until they grow bigger.
Which means we need to find this baby's mother and get them in her pouch fast.
>> On it. Cluebots, search the area for akidnas.
Hello, akidnas.
Any akidnas around?
>> We're running out of time. Oh, where could she be?
>> Quick, kids. What else do you know about akidnas?
>> Well, they're electroceptive, which means they can sense electricity.
They're pretty shy, and sometimes they'll roll up into little spiky balls.
>> Spiky balls. Whiskers. That's it. That spiky thing we've been seeing all day, that may have been the mother Akidna.
>> I think you're right. She must have been too shy to get our attention.
>> And she's probably still close by. But where?
Wait, the clue bots. If the mother Akidner is nearby, they can send out an electrical signal in the wet sand to get her attention.
>> Huh?
>> Akidnas can sense electricity, remember?
>> Right. Cluebots, send a message.
Dear Mother Akidna, please come and pick up your super cute baby. Don't be shy.
We're agents of Clay and we are really nice.
Is it working?
>> My baby.
>> Oh, there she is.
>> Thank you so much for keeping my baby safe.
>> It was our pleasure. But what happened?
>> The egg rolled out of my nest. I was trying to get your attention before, but well, I'm awfully shy. We understand.
I'm just glad I got to meet an egg laying mammal.
>> You folks take care now.
>> Bye.
>> Well, Kit, that's another creature case closed.
>> Though we never figured out what this thing is.
>> Wait, I think I know.
Find anything?
>> Not yet. There must be some clue we missed >> or some animal fact we haven't considered.
>> Watching you two work together kind of reminds me of me and Badger. Oh, I hope she's okay.
>> Don't worry, we're going to find her.
>> Kids, what else do you know about badges?
>> Well, they're mostly active at night.
They like honey and they're okay swimmers, but they usually look for other ways to cross over water.
>> Other ways like a fallen log.
She definitely would have used a log to cross the creek.
>> Could be a clue.
>> Check it out. The log is covered in some kind of slippery moss. Whiskers. That's it.
>> What's it?
>> When the bear chased them to the creek.
The badger used the log to cross over, but she slipped on the moss >> and fell into the creek. Then the current carried her away.
But this creek flows into the ocean.
She'll be swept out to sea.
>> Not if we find her first. Come on, Sam.
>> There she is.
Here. Catch.
Can't reach. She's not going to make it.
>> Oh, yes she will. Bluebot, go.
>> Whoa, you've got little robots in your jacket.
>> Ready, Sam?
>> Keep pulling.
>> Just a little further. And You saved me.
>> And I didn't even get my fur wet.
>> Come on. I know someone who's going to be really excited to see you.
>> Food.
>> And another time, me and Coyote found a bunch of honeycomb in an old tree stump.
We ate so much we nearly There he is. Coyote. Hey, over here.
Badger. You're back. You >> a He's so excited. He doesn't know what to say.
>> I think he's trying to tell us something. Any idea what he's saying, Kit?
>> Nope. What about you, Badger?
>> Beats me. What about you, Bear?
>> The bear.
>> Follow that hyena.
Whoa, the whole clan of hyenas.
>> Maybe they can tell us what happened to Wall-E.
>> Only one way to find out. Hello there, hyenas. I wonder if any of you has seen our friend.
>> Invaders. This area belongs to our clan.
Keep away or else. Sam, hyenas don't trust outsiders like us. They'll only talk to members of their own clan.
>> Then how will we question them?
>> Maybe we have to go undercover.
>> You mean disguise ourselves as a hyena?
How?
>> I got an idea.
>> Are you sure I'm the one who should be doing this? Aren't hyenas more like foxes?
>> Actually, hyenas are more like cats.
Just go in there, show them your spots, and once they trust you, ask about Wall-E. Simple.
>> Yeah, simple.
All right, I'm ready. Let's hope I can imitate a hyena as well as I can imitate Ron.
>> Uh, right. Sam, wait. Uhhuh.
Now you're ready. I'll be listening in through our radios. I got your back, partner.
Hey there, fellow hyena. By any chance, have you seen a flying squirrel around here?
>> Where did you come from? I don't like the look of your spots.
>> Wait, let me guess. You want to join our clan?
>> Um, yes, that's right. Good guess. I can see why you're the leader.
>> Huh? Not so fast. You can join us if you pass the three tests.
>> Tests?
>> Yeah, tests.
No problem. I was the top test taker in the history of clay. I mean my old clan.
>> Careful, Sam.
For the first test, you must make a whoop. The whoop is the way we call our clan, even from far away.
>> Whoop!
>> What was that? I can't hear you.
>> Oh. Uh, that was just a warm up. Here I go.
Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!
>> That's not a whoop. What kind of hyena are you, >> kids? I'm not sure I can do this.
>> I've got an idea. Turn your radio speaker up.
>> Way up.
>> Thanks, kids.
>> No problem. Keep this up and we'll find Wall-E in no time.
>> I'm closing in.
So close.
>> I've got the thief.
>> Wait, you got the thief, but I've got the thief.
>> Polly.
>> Pey Hippie. Pulp.
>> Huh?
>> Anybody want to explain what's going on here? You did it. You found all the Pika thieves, >> including you.
>> Well, now says who? I don't have any stolen flowers, do I?
>> She's got a point, Sam. Without the stolen flowers, how can we prove that they took anything?
>> H Whiskers, that's it. If we find the flowers, we find the thief.
>> Hey, stay away from my hay.
>> I'll put it back. I just want to check something. Ha! As I suspected, dried yellow flowers and blue and pink and red flowers, too.
>> I knew it. Those are my red flowers.
>> So, Polly was the thief all along.
>> Yeah.
>> Uh, hang on. She's not the only thief.
After all, her flowers were stolen, too.
>> I reckon if we search everyone else's haststacks, we'll find all different colors of stolen flowers there, too.
Blue box, go.
Bingo. Multicolored flowers in Pety's haystack and pippies.
>> Pops, too.
>> So, all of you were stealing flowers from each other. You're all haystack thieves.
>> It's true. I took some flowers from Pony.
>> And I took some from Pippy.
>> And I took some from Pop.
All right. I took a few from Polly, too.
I'm sorry. It's just you can only eat so many red flowers before you get tired of them.
>> Last winter, I ate so many blue flowers.
My tongue turned blue. I guess we just all wanted to try something new. Well, that's easy. If you all just shared your flowers, then everyone could get a little of each. care our flowers.
>> See, that's a mighty fine plan.
>> Pikas, pick up your pitchfork.
>> Hooray.
What a sound. Thanks for your help, my squad. Another creature case closed.
Thanks, Stinkwell.
>> Come on, let's find that stinker.
>> Be looking for our first suspect, a Watson, aka a stink bird. Their stomachs break down food really slowly, which makes an awful smell.
>> It's like they're making sauerkraut in their bellies. I think I smell one now.
>> Ew.
I mean, great. There she is.
>> Hello there.
>> What just happened?
>> Quatsons are easily startled, but they aren't very good at flying, so they just kind of fall off whatever they're sitting on. You have to be gentle when you approach them.
>> Hi there. Don't mean to startle you. We just NEED OKAY, new plan. Everyone grab a swab and cover a branch.
>> HELLO.
PILL. So smelly. I mean, no big deal.
>> Let's see if the stink bird is the stink source.
>> Not a match. On to the next suspect.
>> All right, what animal are we swapping next?
>> Actually, we're looking for a plant. The stinking passion flower.
>> Oh, V loves this flower. It makes a stink when you disturb its leaves.
Sounds lovely. So, what's the plan?
>> We're going to disturb its leaves.
>> Hooray.
>> Careful, kids. That flower looks extremely stinky. Don't worry, Sam. The stinkier the better, right?
Love that flower funk.
Got it.
>> Kids, are you okay?
>> I'm fine.
Just great.
Ah, not a match, but I am living for this lemon scent.
