In the Backrooms movie, the still life counterpart Clark's violent actions toward the real Clark are driven by fear of being replaced, as evidenced by the counterpart's concern that Clark is 'changing' and 'not like me anymore,' which parallels Francisco Goya's painting 'Saturn Devouring His Children' where Saturn consumes his children out of fear they will overthrow him.

the complex relationship between the two clarks in the backrooms movie (film analysis)Added:
One of the more interesting parts of the Backrooms movie [music] is the seemingly complex, albeit [music] buried, dysfunctional relationship between Clark, the the real Clark, and [music] his still life counterpart, the pirate captain Clark.
After Clark was stranded in the Backrooms, losing both Cat [music] and Bobby in a very quick succession, he seemingly just kept walking around until he [music] bumped into, or as we kind of assume, the one that was holding the camera in that swimming [music] pool area was indeed the captain Clark counterpart. And it seems like things didn't like go horribly wrong because we see later on when >> [music] >> Phil from A Sync is sort of interviewing interviewing Mary, he does actually show a photo >> [music] >> of Clark and he seemingly is next to his still life counterpart and they seem to just be like hanging out. They, you [music] know, they he seems to not mind him coming along.
So, they seem to be on somewhat friendly [music] terms. I think what kind of happened was when the dinner scene came about, the dinner party scene, and Clark sort of came to terms with himself, >> [music] >> realized he was fine the way he was after getting that validation from Mary.
And then the still life counterpart [music] walked in and was like, "Hey, that you know, you're you're changing.
You're you know, you're not like me anymore.
>> [music] >> I'm just going to basically get you going you're going to replace me and I'm worried that I'm going to become like [music] sort of I don't know. It I feel like it was like a sort of how like a a blood cell, like a white blood cell, would fight off an infection. [music] He realizes that, "Hey, this guy isn't me."
So, he just like gets rid of him, essentially. That's my interpretation of it. Someone pointed [music] this out and I'm not sure who it was, so I apologize for not crediting you, but there is a painting by Francisco Goya, it's a very famous painting where [music] Saturn is devouring one of his children and it's very striking imagery and it's imagery that's very similar [music] to what we see in the background movie when the still of counterpart is devouring Clark pretty much.
And it in that painting it's sort of interpreted that he did it out of fear that his children would overthrow him.
So maybe ultimately that's what was happening the creature was basically [music] getting feelings that he was going to be replaced, decided to take care of it and then called it a kind of wanted to have a clean slate and go after Mary, take her out from there as well.
I would love to see [music] some sort of insight into what their relationship looked like to between the two Clarks and what exactly [music] transpired within that time jump that we didn't get to see. Hopefully Cain does expand upon that in the future.
Anyways, what do you think? Do you think I'm looking into [music] it a bit too much and it's just kind of like a mindless creature taking out it's you know, >> [music] >> getting hungry and eating its prey or do you think it's something more complex than [music] that? Let me know below.
Thank you so much for watching. Take care of yourselves. Much love, much peace and see you next time. Goodbye.
