[00:00:00]At first, this looks like a problem made for toy boats. Here is one canal carrying ships across Germany from the west. Here is another canal leading east toward Berlin. And between them is the Elbe River flowing at a different level.

[00:00:15]For a ship, that gap used to mean a slow detour down through locks into the river along the Elbe, then back up through more locks to reach the other canal. So, engineers near Magdeburg built something that sounds impossible. A bridge full of water. This is the Magdeburg Water Bridge, a navigable aqueduct. Instead of cars driving across it, boats float across it. The bridge carries the Mittelland Canal over the Elbe River and connects it directly to the Elbe-Havel Canal. Inside this huge steel trough, the water forms a calm, elevated channel. Boats glide through the sky while the natural river keeps moving far below. The structure has to hold not just the boats, but thousands of tons of water supported by steel and concrete piers planted across the landscape. The clever part is that a boat floating in water displaces its own weight. So, the load on the bridge does not suddenly become heavier when a vessel enters. It is a shortcut, a fuel saver, and a piece of engineering that turns a river crossing into a quiet voyage above another river.
