Films that prioritize genuine emotional release over convenient forgiveness create more powerful catharsis, as demonstrated by Aleshea Harris's directorial debut 'Is God Is,' which refuses to make the room comfortable or ask characters to forgive quickly for others' convenience.

Is God Is Review Not Polite CatharsisAdded:
His God is is not a movie about revenge.
It's a movie about release. And it's not polite about it either. It's release from pain. Release from abuse. Release from the version of you that's been suffering so long that you forget what peace is. And the reason it hits for me is because this movie refuses to do something that movies love to ask black women to do. Make the room comfortable.
Forgive fast. Be comforting enough that it's convenient for everybody else. But this movie says no. That no is the catharsis, not the neat kind. the kind that rips it out of your chest and finally calls it what it is. Also, this is Miss Harris's first movie, which is insane because this movie doesn't move like a debut. It moves like somebody who knows exactly what they want to say and they're not asking for permission. Cara Young and Mallerie Johnson are ridiculous in this movie. They don't feel like movie sisters. They play like they have this history that started before the movie even did. You can feel their love, their resentment, the jokes, everything all at once. Yeah, the story is simple. It's revenge. They can go mythic one second and switch to intimate in the next. Somehow it manages to hold the emotional thread the entire movie.
Tell me if I'm wrong. Do we push forgiveness in movies because it's healing or because it's better to let everyone feel less guilty?
