On December 29, 1890, U.S. Army troops opened fire on a surrendered Lakota Sioux camp at Wounded Knee Creek, South Dakota, killing between 250 and 300 unarmed men, women, and children during a forced disarmament; this massacre, which resulted in 20 soldiers receiving the Congressional Medal of Honor, remains a controversial event that Native nations, historians, and members of Congress have called for the medals to be revoked, as it was not a battle but a massacre of civilians.

Massacre of wounded KneeAñadido:
December 29th, 1890, Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. A band of Lakota Sue men, women, children, and elders led by Chief Bigfoot had surrendered and camped near Wounded Knee Creek. They were cold, sick, and unarmed. The US 7th Cavalry surrounded them. Nearly 500 soldiers, four H Hotchkus mountain guns pointed at the camp. During a forced disarmament, a single shot rang out. What followed was a massacre. Soldiers opened fire indiscriminately.
People fled across snow-covered ground.
Women and children were shot in the back. Between 250 and 300 Lakota people were killed. Afterward, 20 soldiers received the Congressional Medal of Honor, the nation's highest military award, for their actions that day. To this day, Native nations, historians, and members of Congress have called for those medals to be revoked. Wounded Knee was not a battle. It was a massacre. And that distinction still matters.
