And they thought the loose, steep slope of Sunset Crater would be perfect. Their plan was simple. Plant huge amounts of dynamite on the side of this thousand-year-old volcano and blow it up.
That's an act of such unbelievable arrogance, it's almost funny.
The local outcry was immediate and furious. Newspaper editorials were outraged. Citizens organized. The public pressure was so intense, it reached Washington, D.C.
Two years later, on May 26th, 1930, President Herbert Hoover, trying to protect the site from movie crews, miners, and any other crazy ideas, declared Sunset Crater a national monument. So, a Hollywood publicity stunt accidentally saved it.
But the geology it represents can't be put inside a monument. The threat it poses can't be fenced off with a park boundary. The force that created it is still there, deep underground, waiting.
And the earthquakes are the only warning we have that it's stirring. Which brings us back to now.

But the truth is, the ground in the American Southwest is under enormous stress.
On April 19th, 2026, a swarm of 32 earthquakes, the biggest at a magnitude 3.6, rattled the area around Kanosh, Utah, right on the edge of the Black Rock Desert volcanic field, just north of the Arizona border.
Geologists at the Utah Geological Survey were watching it closely. On May 12th, 2026, a much bigger swarm hit Imperial County, California, right across the border from Southwestern Arizona. Nearly 300 earthquakes in a massive burst of seismic energy, peaking with a magnitude 4.7 that put the whole region on high alert.
Two swarms on two different sides of the state in 2 months. Then on July 10, the shaking started inside Arizona itself. A persistent ongoing swarm near the little community of Littlefield in the very northwest corner of the state where it meets Nevada and Utah.
Small quakes, but lots of them.
Unsettling. Las Vegas news outlets reported on it. Confirming the seismic activity was real and happening. These aren't ghost earthquakes from a decade-old study. These are happening right now.
They are the measured documented reality of a region stretching and groaning.
They're happening along the huge Basin and Range province, a landscape defined by faults and fractures where the continent is literally being torn apart.
This is the bigger tectonic picture that Arizona is a part of. The viral videos got the timeline wrong. They got the location wrong.
They mixed up a study from 2012 with a swarm from Yellowstone in 2021 to create a story about Arizona in 2026.
