The common krait (Bungarus caeruleus) is a highly neurotoxic snake found in Kerala, India, that can be identified by its distinctive cross bands that become more visible toward the middle and rear of the body; despite its small size, it can be over 3 years old and emerges from burrows during rainy seasons when water levels rise. Its venom affects the nervous system, causing paralysis and breathing failure, requiring immediate hospital treatment with polyvalent antivenom. While the snake may appear aggressive, it is not typically dangerous to humans and can be safely released back to its natural habitat.

EP 256 | What happens if a deadly common krait bites? | Vava Suresh | Snakemaster追加:
Namaskar. Welcome to this episode of Snake Master.
>> [music] >> Now I am standing in front of a well. At the end of the fourth ring, there is a small snake. At a quick glance from here, it appears to be a common krait.
However, the head does not seem typical of a common krait. It looks like a snake similar to a krait. I can see corresponding markings on its body. Dear viewers, now take a look at the snake resting on the ring.
>> [music] [music] >> Let me quickly get down into the well and pick it up. However, the rings are slippery.
>> [music] [music] [music] [music] >> I initially thought it was a wolf snake, but I now presume it is a common krait.
It is a wriggling in the water. Its head is slightly different from that of a typical common krait. It appears a bit flat.
>> [music] >> Anyway, let me pick it up without wasting time.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Since this is a small well, our job has been made easier.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> This is not an uncommon snake in Kerala during the rains when [music] the water level in wells and other places rises and enters holes and burrows where snakes reside, they come out. That is what has happened here. This is a female common krait that has laid eggs this season. Although it is small in size, it is not a young snake. It is more than 3 years old. We may mistake it for a 5 or 6-month-old snake, but it is actually over 3 years old. Also note the cross bands on the common krait. They may be faint or indistinct near the head, but become more visible towards the middle and rear of the body. Its venom is highly neurotoxic, affecting the nervous system and leading to paralysis and breathing failure. If a bite occurs, polyvalent antivenom is available in hospitals in Kerala, but the victim must be taken to hospital immediately. So, this is the Indian common krait. Now, let me place the snake in the bottle. We have secured the common krait in the bottle. Our mission here is complete.
>> [music] >> Now I shall bid farewell to the people here and move on to the next rescue location, responding to the next call.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> We were able to reach here as soon as possible after receiving the call. They said that they saw a snake coiled around that wooden roof frame at around 6:00 p.m. But now we don't see it. After that, it was seen moving from one frame to another. They also said the snake had caught a rat. Let us check the situation.
>> [music] >> They mentioned hearing tapping and banging noises, but a snake's movement cannot create such sounds. It was most likely rats running through the wooden frames.
>> [music] [music] >> Anyway, we could not find it anywhere inside.
According to the family members, the snake was seen at 6:00 p.m. and now it is 8:00 p.m. It may have moved from that spot. There are three branches hanging over the roof, so snakes can escape through them.
>> [music] >> Still, I shall check.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Let me climb up and check, although there is little chance of finding it.
>> [music] >> We have checked everywhere inside the house. Only this side remains. Let me check whether it is on this sunshade.
>> [music] >> Yes, finally, it is here. It is in an air hole under a wooden sheet. They had said it was a very large snake, but it is actually a small one. It is a trinket snake, locally known as Katupam bar. Our viewers can now have a close look at the snake. This species is already familiar to our viewers. [music] Let me now bring it down.
>> [music] >> In the Snake Master episodes, we have introduced this species [music] many times. We always tell people not to be afraid of this snake. This is the trinket snake locally known as Kattu Pambu. This snake can bite. It opens [music] its mouth wide and then bites.
It is nearly 2 years old and is a female. They said it had caught a large rat, but it has neither caught nor swallowed one. The snake must have chased the rat and it likely escaped. It is more than 1 m long and can deliver a strong bite.
>> [music] [music] >> I can show you how it bites. I don't think it is in the mood to bite. Let me try once more. No luck.
It is not biting and seems to be trying to escape from this situation, trying to get out of my hands. Now it is time for us to conclude the mission here. I would like to tell the people here that if they see such snakes, they need not be afraid. You can let it go on its own.
Even if it bites, there is no need to worry. Now let us bottle it. Could you get me a bottle?
>> [music] [music] >> The rain seems imminent and it is time to say goodbye and good night to the people here. Now, we are heading to the next location guided by the next call.
