The Atoll That Disappears and ReappearsAdded:
There's a tiny island in the western Pacific [music] that vanishes and reappears every 6,000 years. Pingelap Atoll, part of Micronesia, isn't just fighting rising seas, [music] it's caught in a natural cycle with the ocean. It started as a volcanic island, born from underwater eruptions. Over thousands of years, the volcano cools and collapses beneath the waves.
>> [music] >> Coral reefs then take over, building a ring of limestone around the sinking core. Eventually, the whole atoll slips below sea level, disappearing [music] from maps and satellite images. But, coral doesn't stop growing. Layer by layer, it rebuilds the island from the ocean floor. Centuries later, the land breaks the surface again. Archaeological cores reveal Pingelap has drowned and resurfaced at least three times since the last ice age, about 11,000 years ago. Today, it sits just a few meters above the waves. The next full submersion is predicted around the year 8,000. For the 250 people living there, every sunrise is a reminder. Their home is ancient, but always temporary.
