High Royds Hospital, originally the West Riding Pauper Lunatic Asylum opened in 1888, was one of Britain's largest Victorian psychiatric institutions that housed thousands of patients over more than a century; its cemetery contains the graves of 2,861 patients buried between 1890 and 1969, including individuals from diverse backgrounds such as Elizabeth Merchant of Melbourne, Australia, and three infants, representing the forgotten patients of a time when mental illness was misunderstood and institutionalized rather than treated with modern compassion.

High Royds Hospital: Inside Yorkshire’s Forgotten AsylumHinzugefügt:
It's quite a somber place.
The resting place of over 2,000 patients from Manston, from High Roads, from originally the pauper's asylum.
And I guess this is all of it.
Mhm.
You can see the little tombstones.
I think this is where maybe the bodies were.
And maybe there's only a few tombstones left now.
Because the other graveyard seemed to have people younger than what they claim on here.
And here is another one.
Let's have a look.
And this belonged to Elizabeth Merchant of Melbourne, Australia. Died the 20th April, 1923.
Let the kindly fight.
In loving memory.
As you can see here.
The rest of the graveyard, I think it's just remembrance.
So, that's what I can do. Is remember the people that were buried here.
And forgotten about, unfortunately. But maybe now they're not forgotten about as you're listening to me.
So, if you'd like to see the history of this, High Roads is across the road in Manston, the hospital, which is now apartments, which are very beautiful.
Mhm. [clears throat] Not the same as when I worked there, but they don't look very different.
On this side of the road, you have the cemetery where the patients were put.
So, I'm not quite saying it's a day out, but for historic purposes, yes, it's a good day out.
Anyway, that's enough for today. Thank you.
Ciao.
