In December 2004, a magnetar 50,000 light-years away experienced a starquake that released more energy in 0.2 seconds than the Sun produces in 250,000 years; despite this immense energy, Earth's atmosphere shielded us from sterilization, though if the magnetar had been only 10 light-years away, Earth would have been destroyed.

đ A Dead Star 50,000 Light-Years Away Just Touched Earth #shortsAjoutĂ© :
In December 2004, a dead star on the other side of our galaxy had a star quake. In 2/10 of a second, it released more energy than the sun produces in 250,000 years. We were 50,000 light years away, the entire galaxy between us and it. It still ionized Earth's upper atmosphere. Satellites shielded by the planet itself still detected the signal.
If that star had been 10 light years away instead of 50,000, Earth would have been sterilized. Nothing with a nervous system survives. The closest magnetar to Earth is 9,000 light years away. That's probably fine.
