Three things that control the visibility of AHE on x-ray. One, collimation, the most [clears throat] important one, which also affects patient dose, IR exposure, and contrast.
We should be using collimation as the number one way to reduce PT dose.
Open or decreased collimation, aka creating a larger field of view, will spread the light out more, making AHE less prevalent.
Two, SID. Increasing SID will decrease AHE visibility.
Think of a flashlight. As you increase SID, the ability to see the brightest area, umbra, versus the not as bright area, penumbra, decreased. Same thing applies to AHE.
More distance will make it less apparent. Yay!
Three, anode angle.
In diagnostic radiography, our anode angle can be 7 to 20 degrees, with 12 degrees being the most common.
Cool.
Technically, if we could somehow break into the vacuum tube and swap the 12-degree anode out for a different angled anode, we could change the AHE.
But, we can't. So, this one is dumb.
