A compelling look at "conservative innovation" where the Amish use modern soil science to protect their traditional way of life. It proves that sustainability is less about rejecting technology and more about choosing it wisely.

Amish Country...Haying Has Started Fast and Furiously...Lancaster County, Pennsylvania本站添加:
For over 200 years, Amish farming was characterized by turning the soil with horses and mules, a practice among many that helped establish their traditional identity.
While noill farming became more and more popular among the English in the 70s and 80s, Amish farmers were still holding on to the more traditional plow on their farms.
Slowly but surely though, more and more Amish farmers accepted the practice after years of observation and studying on the matter.
There are still some farmers, Amish and English alike, that still plow and disc their fields as farmers have for hundreds of years.
Cover cropping was a natural extension of no till farming. No till farming methods in conjunction with covercropping yield many benefits.
No till disrupts the soil much less than plowing. While cover crops improve the soil structure, increase organic matter and manage moisture and often decrease or eliminate yield gaps.
Together they protect against erosion, sequester carbon, and provide excellent weed control.
In the past, fields were often left as is after harvest in the fall.
Today, with cover cropping, valuable crops are started in the fall and harvested in spring.
Here, we watch as cover crops such as winter rye or trite are cut, tatted, raked, and bailed for animal feed, likely dairy cows. Very often cover crops will be bailed and bagged to encile. Some farmers will harvest the grain and straw from their cover crops all depending on need. I hope you enjoy the video.
