Canal infrastructure is vulnerable to catastrophic structural failures that can cause widespread environmental damage, as demonstrated by the Bridgewater Canal breach on January 1, 2025, which caused the canal to collapse into a 30-foot deep hole, disrupting local water treatment facilities and creating hazardous conditions that require years of repair work.

You must see this..My narrowboat journey continues to the end of the Bridgewater canal..#945Added:
Hello and welcome to the beautiful Bridgewater Canal. I've been pottering and bimbling along this canal for the past few weeks and my exartner Suie has joined me uh and we take a trip down to Bolington which is as far as we can go on this se on this side this section of the Bridgewater Canal because there was a big massive breach and I want to show you on foot the devastating results of that breach.
In the last vlog, I made Sooie walk all the way into Sale and she really loved it. She also loved the uh the churches and all the decor on this canal.
Beautiful place. Come along. Let's get stuck in.
That's just a perfect little dinner at night, isn't it? So sweet. Thank you.
>> Mhm.
>> We uh previously explored sale. It's got some nice charity shops.
If you like charity shops and getting your phone repaired and getting your haircut, the high street is perfect.
Apart from that, doesn't seem to be much else. Unless it's really an expensive area, then you get a variety of shops.
Boy, I love charity shops. becoming more expensive uh in my view.
>> Noodle stir fry tonight. All right.
>> Yeah. Noodle stir fry. Lovely.
>> Nice. Just >> How would you like to eat?
One, two, three.
>> Yeah. Three left. Four each.
>> Four each.
>> Now it's raining now. Look. So it's uh to wait for a minute. It's very dark out there. So, I'm gonna wait.
I don't get I keep waiting for the rain.
It's black as anything. I don't just get going. I never get going. It's warm.
It's warm, but it's um Hello. You hear that zip is quite high here. Quite windy.
So, as soon as I get going, I'm going to be flying high on this boat. Okay.
being morowed here.
It's quite high up from the bloody. You got really jump down, you know.
Really think about that then. My knees are hurting from cycling. That's one out. There we go.
Okay. All right. There. Me and Sue went to um get a breakfast at um what's that pub called? pub chain. Oh, not slug and lettuce. Weather spoons.
Just been to Weather Spoons and you got smudge on that.
And it's always the same there. Great.
Great breakfast. We mosied around all the uh charity shops because John's Mrs. is from Thailand. She uh loves flowery little cups and sauces. So I Are you Are you there? Yeah.
So, I just bought a a little set for Lily because John's always doing stuff. He's always taking me to golf. You know what I mean?
It cost a fortune. I can't I literally cannot afford golf now. Not till I get paid end of the month. Then I might have a game. It's it's that thin now on the ground. So many people doing this thing now. It's earnings for me anyway.
All the people that I started with have all exploded.
My channel hasn't.
And I wake up in the middle of the night some nights thinking, "Oh my god, I'm going to not survive with worry. It's mad."
Sometimes just wish you didn't have to worry about this stuff, you know? I really do.
I have to get a part-time job. Who knows? Anyway, nice little area. Let's not go all about me.
Let's pull you in a bit.
Little bit smudgy there, aren't you?
It's a nice little area for moing up.
Safe. Not a problem. That car park on the left there is only two pound a night. And the rain started to come in.
See that? Bit creaky.
Just on the left here. You've got the uh boat higher. Take a little canoe out for the day. Yesterday we had a load of kids. Had a load of kids coming past us, banging into the boat, having some fun.
Didn't do any damage.
>> I got the broly here, love. It's raining. It's going to be raining heavy, I reckon.
>> I was dead inside it.
>> We're passing Springfield Primary School.
It's absolutely throwing it down.
This is what you call tick over land.
There's a boat there called Outrageous.
There's one called More to Life with a double O R as in mooring up.
There's one there called Quartz.
Fascinating. And perhaps when I get a bit older and a bit too frail, I probably get a moing.
There's one there called Atlanta.
Uh, Invictus.
Sure seen that name before.
You might get a boat with two or three names at the same Sorry, two two or three boats with the same name.
One boat there called Jambo. Emma Maisy 2.
>> You top it up with the legs.
>> There you are. Microphone.
>> Yeah. I see. You top it up with with the legs.
>> Yeah. I've got to put those extra >> put those extra magnetic bits on the bottom.
>> Well, that's a good feat.
>> Yeah. Otherwise, it blows over in the wind on the top. I was talking about my um tripod now. I don't know if I've shown you or not. There we are. Look, I just put those magnetic things on the bottom with some zippy ties and tape or whatever.
That's my tripod. And it's these bendy bits, the knobbybly ones, which are good. Those knobbybly ones, >> yeah, >> are good, but >> they keep getting loose. They come loose after a bit. So much bending. So, >> that's working well. Good.
>> Yeah, they are. Catch some sunshine, sir. Now, sun's coming out.
>> Uh, not quite.
There we are. I'll put you back in there. You stay there, you lot.
>> Yeah.
>> Hey, >> your face been cut off.
>> You got your war apron on. Where'd you get these aprons from, Zoe?
>> Taiwan.
>> From Taiwan?
>> Yeah.
>> Is it normal over there?
>> Yeah, it's normal. Got many different type.
>> Different types.
>> Get a jacket. Are you warm enough?
>> Men one, you got women's one.
>> You warm enough?
>> Well, no. We do this one. It's okay.
>> Oh, you're warm now cuz it's windy.
>> Yeah. Are you warm now?
>> Not cold.
>> Not cold.
>> You can't say warm. You can't be warm outside.
>> No.
>> Can you >> can be?
>> Right. Off we go.
>> You want to go? Do you want to go there?
Then you >> got the rowing club on the right here.
Walton Park Sport Center. But just beyond this wide beam, beyond this wide beam, there's a gorgeous little model railway. You sit on the little engines, >> steam engines.
>> Yeah.
>> And then come in and and they get them fired up and all that. Oh, it's fascinating to see.
>> Yeah.
Fascinating to see though again.
>> Yeah, it can spot it in raining and it's like April showers but in May, isn't it?
>> Well, probably April shower come late.
>> April showers in May. Sausage.
Sail cruising club here.
>> I've just mowled up under this bridge.
>> Under the bridge.
Get out of the rain.
>> Just absolutely throwing it down out there. Just m up here doing some washing while I'm hanging around.
>> Lovely English summers. They're wonderful, aren't they?
We're This is This is Aling. Is it Ultingham? This place?
>> Uh I think it's Alingo or something like that.
>> Yeah, round about there. only getting towards the end.
As the rain stopped and we sailed on down the Bridgewater Canal, we passed these beautiful uh in my mind they look like great humongous ships or liners overlooking the water.
Great design, great little area as we uh travel on. The end. Another cracking building that I'm glad they've kept it.
They could have got rid of all these, knocked them all down.
That is superb. 1897.
Wow. We're hoping to reach on that chim.
Look at that chimney. Suie the remnants of it there. Look, Suie.
>> Where's the chimney?
>> That chimney there with a just in front of you.
>> This here. Look, Suie. That's a chimney there. Yeah, it >> is.
>> It's been knocked down a bit, but it's what a beautiful structure.
>> Are you sure?
>> I just hope we can get where we're going before that turns up.
Lord. You can imagine make it to a flat.
>> That is amazing.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh lord.
>> Make it to a flat or a house.
>> Look at this old must been all warehouses in their day and all that.
>> They are listed. If they are not listed, maybe you can alter it.
>> Yeah.
Absolutely pouring it down.
The wind comes in with it.
just smashed my microphone socket.
That's over now. That microphone finished.
The bit that goes in the bottom of your phone, it's just snapped. I knew it would. It's crap design.
So, so annoyed.
So annoyed.
Dear, there's always something in there.
Never smooth, is it? something always just to trip you up, push you over, stab you in the back, hit you around the face. That's just so we get up in the morning, isn't it?
So, I've got no microphone now. That's it. Until I can get another one, I suppose. I'll try and get some spares.
That one.
Different sound, isn't it? But still talk next to the phone. It's still all right.
It's very very upset and disappointed though. You know what I mean?
Trying to film, hold the broly, steer the boat.
The magnet got caught on the broly and it and the phone dropped down there and it caught on the step. Snapped it. Boom.
Oh, this canal is just stunning.
The more is just fantastic.
I'm all the way down there. Look, they're lovely. Really is.
Lovely little heist there.
And I think this rain's gone now till tonight apparently. Hopefully.
>> There may be a bit of wind.
>> Just walking down to uh down to the brereech. Have a quick look and see what's happening. I can't fly the drone.
It's too windy today. It's tomorrow's 40 mph winds.
So, we're just going to walk down.
>> Pretty canal. Really is. There's no paths here, though. So, once you go once you stop up there, the paths end becomes a bit rougher and rougher as you further you go down. You could reverse down here, couldn't you? And just spend your time in the wilderness. There comes the rain.
to we can't believe thousands of tadpoles.
>> Subie, a little gandalf with a staff.
>> Wow, look at all those.
>> Wow. A lot of turtles.
Lots of them.
>> Yeah, I know.
>> Hundreds of them.
>> Amazing.
>> Just show Just shows this canal's full of frogs, doesn't it?
>> It must be collapsed from here.
>> It's collapsed. Yeah.
>> From this point to that point. See?
>> Yes. I can see that.
>> Probably trying to do something with it.
>> Well, obviously not doing anything by the looks of it.
>> Not at the moment.
>> Right in here.
>> What on earth is that doing there? We've walked miles. We're in the middle of nowhere. out of nowhere. You see that tourist bit looks new.
>> Looks really newish. Must be a shop shopping center around here somewhere then.
>> No way.
>> Absolutely ridiculous. Really? Just push that down here. So, what it requires a lot of effort, doesn't it?
>> Yeah.
>> I can hear a road, but >> Oh, lord.
Pushing a shopping trolley on this path.
>> It's hard enough around a supermarket.
These people need Oh, where's the briti?
Here's the breach. Oh, >> you got this one.
>> These people need like a shopping trolley medal. Need they need to work in superto. They can push trolley around on this path.
>> They can push it around in superto.
There's a road goes underneath. Sooie, that's where it breachs. Probably this Wow.
>> Oh my god. Don't face it. And then you got all this men.
>> This where this must must be where it's breach. Suie.
Oh goodness gracious. Wow.
Well, you got all this handy stuff in there. You can want to take it home with you.
What a sh it's grown up.
>> Can't get round it here apparently.
Let's have a look.
Come on. Sooie sausage.
This is a beautiful canal as well. It really is.
It is a beautiful canal.
It'd be a crime to lose this canal.
Not supposed to walk past this bar.
Look.
>> Come on. You're not supposed to be here.
Let's hurry up. Not supposed to be here, sausage. We're in the We're in the fallout zone where nobody goes.
Just shows you how deep. Look how deep it is.
>> Yeah, it's very thick canal.
>> It's hard to tell. It's I put it 8 foot deep, 10 foot deep.
>> Yeah, very decent.
>> It's lovely though, is it? It really is.
Lovely area.
>> Very decent.
>> Hope it doesn't rain again.
>> Oh my god, look at that sooie.
Wow, it's collapsed in on itself.
The canal has collapsed in on itself.
Decent uh decent fridge there. So we to get it out use that >> fridge there. Look at that >> the fridge.
>> Fridge. Oh no.
>> Still got decent milk in it. Maybe.
>> Yeah.
>> Wow. It's high up.
>> Oh my lord. Look at this.
Wow.
>> Wow.
Oh, that is just it's not amazing, but it's a sight to see, isn't it? How deep it is. Suie ruin now. See, it's all you know kind of >> all the grounds collapsed underneath.
>> Yeah. Come, you know, comes together.
>> Wow, that's deep. It's about 20 foot deep.
Oh, wow. Look at that.
There's no uh >> criy.
This devastating breach happened on January the 1st, 2025, and it was New Year's Day. It caused major disruption to a local water treatment works, completely swamping it. There was a breach back in 1971 in this in the same area in fact and um they say that the breach will be repaired by 2026 but at the moment I can't see that happening.
>> Wow.
>> Just going to walk along. Be careful.
sausage.
God, that's about it's about 30 foot deep.
It's just completely collapsed in on itself. Oh, blime me. Look at this.
Bit nerve-wracking really cuz you're high up here. High up. You're not sure whether it's going to hold you or not.
Oh wow.
That's going to take a lot of work.
Must have be gone into that field there.
Wow. It's still a big lake down there.
Sie still. Wow.
I think me and Suie are standing right here looking at this brereech.
This is crazy.
I mean, seen it on camera, but then seeing it firsthand.
Bit worried about Sooie. She's not st steady on her feet these days. Oh, >> heartbreaking though.
>> So, this is heartbreaking, isn't it?
Said it's heartbreaking. It is. So, all the must be the remnants of the canal there. Maybe you know, >> it went all down into this section here.
Look.
>> Oh my goodness.
>> So, be careful. So, this is slippy now.
>> I'm not going down there.
>> You can just let me just run down there.
I'll come back in a minute.
>> Yeah. You stay there, S.
>> Yeah, I will be right. It must have come down into that field there.
Quick run run run up here and have a look.
I think the tailor have covered this quite extensively. This brereech criy trees falling in probably can't see it on camera but it is bloody monumental. This is this is serious amount of work.
You've literally got a B. There's the other side of the brereech just up there. Look.
See that?
I'm not going to walk up there. I might come back and bring a drone with me to get some drone footage, but wow.
Is a beautiful area though, man.
Breathtaking.
This takes me all back to my childhood.
It really is deep for me. This kind of environment exploring the countryside as kids and stuff. It's takes you right back.
This is a no started. It's a monumental task, isn't it? Suie.
Wow.
>> Yeah. And then eventually this will come over.
>> Steel's all rotten. Yeah.
>> It's all collapsed in on itself. Yeah.
>> And they did it collapse underneath. So, and then this one >> they collapsed underneath and down.
>> And then this one on top >> this one falls on top of it. Yeah. So, whole the earth underneath collapsed and then this all fell in on itself.
>> Yeah.
>> See where it's collapsed here? Can't you look? It's all falling on itself there.
Suie.
>> Yeah. So, is that any anywhere navigated there or it's all collapsed?
>> See this? See this bridge here?
>> They normally breach on these bridges.
>> See, this is the bridge.
>> Mhm. Underneath goes the road and the and the rivers.
>> River follow.
>> So this is a river ballin underneath.
>> Yeah, >> they usually go on these rivers.
>> This aqueduct.
>> It's a river ballin underneath. This is called an aqueduct. It's water over >> you know when you pass by another basically this is underneath.
>> Yeah. Wow.
>> That looks just beautiful, doesn't it?
If that come out at Waga mom is like that or some posh restaurant, I'd be absolutely over the moon.
>> And I always love I always love using chopsticks.
>> So my favorite is chopsticks. See that lot? See that there?
>> They don't do.
>> Oh. Oh. Put these off.
>> Yeah. Nice.
>> Every time I cook it. Yeah.
>> You've outdone yourself. Fluffy thumbs up. You're happy to cook for me, aren't you?
>> You're happy to cook for us.
>> It's a pleasure, is it, for you to cook for me? I don't blame you. I'm famous and all that.
>> Oh, I want to do Do you need >> this parking over here? Look, this is the other side of the canal. Just having a look at the estate.
Big farm there. Look, this is a nice area.
Just up from the canal. Then you got those shops handy, isn't it? On the very quite peaceful canal, but you got the shops near it as well. So, >> well, you pass the shop. Okay. You didn't feel the shop, did you?
>> Yeah, I did.
>> The shop is near absolutely the red shop is absolutely the red.
>> That chap there, it just says, "How you doing? What? How do you get rid of all your effluent? How do you get your water? Where'd you get your power from?
Well, you've been cruising for I've been cruising all the way up and down here for years. Nice. Such a nice bloke. Just interested in how you live on a narrow boat. People don't understand how you get rid of everything or how you get water, what you pay. People are just interested. No microphone now. I've ruin my microphone. It's finished. It's over.
Unless somebody's got a lock C1 receiver, then you can you can send to me. That'd be great. I've got my email on my channel. So, click on that and send me an email if you got one. I'd be grateful.
Why you got your hazmat suit on? What you doing? There's no chemical. There's no chemical spills around here, Suie.
>> Yeah. Just keep the wind out.
>> Keep the wind out. All right.
>> Go to the toilet before you go.
>> We're heading now.
>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Go to toilet.
>> I don't want to go to toilet. I don't need the toilet. Suie, >> I don't need it.
>> No, thank you. Thank you for your concern.
>> I had a very good >> My bladder is empty at the moment.
>> Yes. But no doubt it be full up all of a sudden.
>> I'm just showing Suie how to reverse and she looks really interested.
>> So the back end's going to swing out though. So we got to get more space at the back. Turn. See the back end.
>> See this?
>> Yeah.
>> See that side?
>> Well, that makes sense. You got to, you know, like a house over here just makes >> Yeah.
>> Perfect, isn't it?
>> See that sausage for young family?
>> Don't go all the way to there either.
You go about halfway to the middle, then you start reversing.
>> Yeah.
Reverse back in there. You never get out of it.
Reverse the middle.
You're still turning. Still turning reversing. Turn back into the middle.
Then you go forward. They're forward now. Look.
>> Yeah.
>> They gone all the way around there.
They're in the trees now.
>> Yeah.
>> There's an arch to it, Suie.
>> Yeah.
>> Back to sail.
>> There we go. Perfect. You did a great job, S didn't you? Yeah. Great job instruing me. You told me well. You told me well. Silly. Is it all by yourself?
She's inspecting the uh she's inspecting the canal.
She'll write a report later. Probably perfect moorings. These are down here because you got you got the trams over there. Takes you straight into Manchester. Such a great area.
treelined beautiful place. Got a coffee boat just there, calf boat and they're open today.
If anybody's got one of these um >> what?
>> One of these.
>> What is these?
>> So, I'm talking to the vlog. Suie.
>> Yeah.
>> If anybody's got one of these they can give me, that'd be great.
It's a Holland C1 receiver.
Right. Thank you.
