The Newcomen atmospheric engine operates through a cyclic process where steam pushes a piston upward, then cold water condenses the steam to create a vacuum that allows atmospheric pressure to push the piston downward, enabling continuous mechanical work when connected to a pump via a rocking beam.

Genius Engineering of Newcomen atmospheric engine #atmosphericAdded:
Do you know how the world's first steam engine worked? This is its most essential component, called the piston cylinder system. At the bottom of the cylinder is a steam boiler, which sends steam into the cylinder through a pipe.
Pay close attention to the valve [music] on this pipe. It is crucial. When the piston is at the very bottom of the cylinder, the valve opens, allowing steam to enter and push the piston [music] upward. Once the piston reaches the top, notice the pipe on the right and the connected water tank. At this moment, the valve on the water [music] tank opens, spraying cold water into the cylinder. The cold water causes the hot steam inside the cylinder to rapidly condense into liquid water, shrinking to only a small [music] fraction of its original volume. This causes the pressure inside the cylinder to drop sharply, creating a [music] near vacuum.
As a result, the piston is pushed downward by the external atmospheric pressure. Now, here comes the key point.
While the piston is moving downward, the steam valve immediately closes and the water [music] tank valve also shuts. The cylinder becomes a sealed chamber, allowing the pressure difference to push the piston down as effectively as possible. When the piston reaches the bottom [music] again, the steam valve reopens and hot steam once again pushes the piston [music] upward, starting the next cycle. As long as the boiler continues producing steam and the water tank [music] keeps supplying water, this mechanism can keep moving up and down continuously. If you add a rocking [music] beam with one end connected to the piston and the other to a pump, the piston's motion will make the beam swing back and forth, allowing the pump to continuously draw [music] ground water to the surface. Congratulations, you have invented the Newcomen atmospheric engine.
