Back in April of 2021, Clemson's defensive lineman, Brian Breey's 15-year-old sister, Ella, was diagnosed with medulla blasto, an aggressive form of brain cancer. After months of chemo and radiation, her scans finally came back clean. And for a moment, it felt like she had beaten it. But in June of 2022, the cancer returned. Clemson planned to honor Ella at their home opener. But the day before the game, Ella suffered a seizure and had to be airlifted to a hospital. Ryan still played in the game. Immediately after rushed home 6 days later, Ella had passed away at just 15 years old. 2 days later, Clemson had another game. And what the opposing team did left everybody's speech. Louisiana Tech punter Patrick Reya had lost his own sister to brain cancer when she was just 12 years old. He went to his head coach with an idea. He wanted to do something for Brian and his family. That night, Coach Comi told the entire team a plan and had everyone write a handwritten note. And on game day, Coach Comi even walked out with an Ella Strong shirt.
Clemson fans filled the stadium wearing gray, which was Ella's favorite color.
