When we fight against internal urges, they often become louder and more persistent; instead of viewing these urges as enemies to defeat, we should approach them with compassion and curiosity to understand what they are trying to help us cope with, as they are often attempting to soothe, escape, or help us feel better in the best way they know how.

The harder I fought the urge to drink… the louder it gotAdded:
I used to think something was wrong with me.
I decided not to drink, and then a little voice would show up telling me, "One won't hurt. You deserve it. It would make you feel so good."
I called my little drinking voice.
I used to fight it, try to push it away, ignore it, doing everything I could to get rid of that little voice.
But the harder I fought, the louder it got.
What I didn't understand back then was that little voice wasn't trying to hurt me. It was trying to help me in the best way it knew how.
And everything started to change when I stopped fighting it, and started to turn towards it with compassion and curiosity.
