GFCI (Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter) outlets provide critical safety protection in bathrooms by detecting ground faults and cutting power before shock occurs, preventing entire breaker panels from tripping; proper installation requires identifying the correct power source (line) versus the load side, as reversed connections cause the GFCI to trip and fail to reset, and the standard electrical color coding uses black wires for hot (connected to brass terminals) and white wires for neutral (connected to silver terminals).

When the Drywall guy is also A MASTER ELECTRICIANAdded:
Hey there. Good morning. Thursday morning as I begin this. Just dropping my son off and it's going to be probably my third day in a row.
Missing the gym.
Second or third day in a row. Uh yesterday I did some push-ups and I worked pretty hard yesterday.
I didn't film I didn't film ha I didn't film anything from the work that I did yesterday. So I ended up going and getting some wood to do some hardwood floor repairs in my house. I did two different repair areas with that. Skimcoated the children's room ceiling and fixed a window sill that had a lot of paint chips coming on it. I had to scrape, caulk, prime, bondo, all of that.
Uh so yeah, that was yesterday in a nutshell. Did a bunch of work around the house. Today we've got another picker list. A lot of things on this list to try to get done. All of it is really remedial.
Problem is, this job is about an hour away with traffic and I've already looked at the map and there is traffic. So, I've already been starting to get the van loaded up and I'm going to get right on the road as soon as I get back to the house. So, we're going to go straight out to this job and then it's my hope to do a quick workout from the job.
maybe five sets of burpees real quick in between doing some work and getting set up. Uh it's pretty extreme, almost a bit ridiculous, but it's just to keep the dedication level at the utmost high where it has to be because if you start to slack, you'll just continue to do so. And I can't do that. I don't want to do that. I got on the scale this morning. I was uh sick to death to see 244 on the scale. 244.4.
I feel like I ate a lot yesterday, but that could also be from high sodium because I know yesterday I had a good amount of sodium. So, it could be some water retention there. But again, weight loss is not linear. So hopefully the next time I see a a good little drop down, you know, we're hitting 241. I didn't set a goal for this week for next Monday, but I'm going to go ahead and set that goal right now. It's Thursday.
I would like to see 240 by Monday.
And I think that I'm around 243 right now. two I I've seen 241 on the scale and then this morning I saw 244. So we're right in that wheelhouse. And here's the crazy thing. If my goal for Monday is 240, my goal for the entire month of May was 240. So, I'm I'm if I don't hit my goal by Monday, by the end of the month, which I don't think is far off from Monday, maybe another week, I'll certainly hit 240 and then some.
Uh June should be the the month that I really get where I want to be at. At least I hope I do. Um I'd like to see 23 five by the end of June. Maybe 233. I don't want to put a 10 lb weight uh loss goal for the month of June because with every month that goes by, losing more and more weight becomes harder and harder to do. So, we'll see.
Anyways, uh my hope is that today is super productive and I I got most of what I need. I should be able to run through a lot of this relatively quickly, but I'm sure there's going to be some things that hold me up.
Won't know till we get out here. There's also some additional items on the list that I didn't sign up for. I I'll take a look at some of those and see if it's possible that I could tack on some of those as well because I know I shared yesterday. I I probably made the statement where between this job and the job for the realtor and the last job that I just completed, all of my bills are paid. That was an inaccurate statement after crunching the numbers.
I'm still shy by a little bit.
So, anything extra that I can be bringing in, I need it. All right.
We got a long ride ahead of us. We're going to get loaded up in the van.
Hopefully, I got enough gas in the van.
With gas being 459 a gallon, you would figure gas would be going down by this point. All it's doing is going up. All it's doing is going up. Long ride ahead of us. Let's get loaded up and get to this job.
Man, what a long ass ride that ended up being. All right, just getting out here to the job site. I've taken a look at a couple of things. I thought that there were three bathrooms in this house. I thought it was three GFCIs that needed to be replaced or three bathrooms that needed GFCIS. I'm only seeing two so far.
Well, I'm only seeing two. I've gone through the entire house. All right.
Can I I got a corner post that's beat to [ __ ] from a weed eater.
I'm going to show you how I'm about to fix this with some spray foam and bondo.
Couple of doors that need to get sanded, painted, cocked up. Some mud work inside.
GFCI's outlet plate covers and something else. Can't remember. All right.
Gutter down spouts. There's one of my doors right there. We'll get on that in just a second.
All right. Grass needs to be cut over here big time.
when you don't have a cameraman.
I'm supposed to be doing burpees, too.
Burpees are going to have to hold up.
Let me get a little caught up out here real quick because it is supposed to be super hot today.
All right, let's go ahead and start.
All right, good deal with that.
Oh, this is not a save a tip situation.
All right, we'll let that set up.
That's the first thing to do.
That'll take a while to set up.
All right. Next, let's go ahead and get on our sander real quick.
Couple of loose boards here.
right there.
Nice.
Okay.
Okay.
Garage door got some loose brick molding around it right in that area.
This area over here probably can be addressed, too.
We need a weather stripping in there.
New weather stripping for the garage door is needed. I might do that. I might do that cuz I I think I may have to run the Lowe's. That was not on my list of [ __ ] to do. We'll take a look at that in just a moment. Let's go ahead and address this guy first, though.
Go. And so I'm moving through this list pretty quickly. I've already done a couple of things. Down spouts are done. Um garage door is prepped and getting there.
I'm out of coke. Just that fast. I am out of coke.
Heat up here.
All right.
All right. Looking good over here for the time being. I think everything's cocked in as much as I'm going to [ __ ] it in right yet. Now, this needs to be addressed in here, too. But I ain't going to mess with that until we get that leather stripping in there. And we'll look at that. Maybe I add that or maybe I don't, but it needs to be done. All right, moving on.
Hey there. Welcome to the bathroom. And we got a little spot right there we got to address. Looks like maybe one right over there, too. And then I don't know about around here. I mean, obviously I would like to coaul that in. But here's my concern.
Oh man, I don't know what that is.
And I don't want to paint the whole bathroom. Now, I did bring paint with me just in case. I brought some stuff called silver drop, which would probably be close to what this is, but it probably wouldn't be. And this is kind of a a [ __ ] because the whole house is painted in this. So, that is a fun a fun one. Yeah, it is. Come on down here with me. I'm right down. I'm right down here, y'all. Yeah. Let me go ahead and put you up this a little bit.
We're right there. All right. Well, while I'm in here and real quick. Oh, I don't even have a screwdriver. So, here's one of my outlets that I need to replace with a GFCI. So, we'll get that taken care of. Let me go whip up some mud, bring my knife and stuff up here, and we'll get that taken care of. Matter of fact, while we do that, what am I talking about? There's two areas that need to get done up here.
And in here is the other one. Is that a Thought that was a panel box. I saw the panel box. It's down in the garage.
Smells like straight cigarettes in here.
If this was freshly painted, they should have used an additive in the paint, which they didn't. And if this was freshly painted, where the freak is the light switch in here? Right here.
That's crazy.
And if this was freshly painted, damn, they didn't even take care of any. And it was. It had to be because all this shit's off. Look at that big old holiday right there. Yeah, man. Freshly painted.
And whoever your painter was, you know, he was the cheapest cuz he certainly didn't take care of no repair work. All right, cool. We're going to bust out these repairs real quick. Take care of these GFCIs as well. Here's a quick little troubleshooting situation. So, here's a bathroom that has two outlets.
Which one do I GFCI protect? Where would the power really be running up from? I would assume power is running up from right here and feeding. We'll figure it out once we open it up. Let's go mix up mud and get to it.
I found a Sheron Williams bag downstairs.
I tried to hunt through the house one one time.
Found a Sherman Wayne's bag downstairs with more outlet plate covers in it. Um some little out uh a can of spray primer, but no leftover paint.
And what's crazy is none of the baseboards got painted in here. It doesn't look like they did. Maybe they did. I would assume they did. They're just dirty as [ __ ] I'm sure this was a real cheap paint job, but even with a cheap paint job, you'd at least leave, you know, a sign of what the paint was.
Help the next guy out.
But no, ain't going to do that. Not at all. All right, quick little shot of five. Pretty tight.
mix as well. Try to one coat razledazzle here.
All right, that's a relatively thick coat of mud right there. Let's go over to the next bathroom. Take care of that spot real quick. And then we'll run these receptacles.
Oops. Hey, I'm right here, y'all. Right here. I ain't go nowhere. Nope. I'm still here. Still here working on this wild [ __ ] Okay.
You know, they might talk trash about apartment guys. And again, for a long time, I was that. But what the apartment world will teach you is speed. How to get in and get [ __ ] done and get it done quick.
Yeah.
All right.
Thank God I got my small knife. Yes, indeed.
Okay, there you go. There.
Okay, that's pretty good.
Then right here, you got another spot.
Hopefully you guys can see that right there. Look at that. Yeah, man. Hey, just leave it right. That's what them cheap painters were thinking. [ __ ] me. I don't know what that is, but I don't want to mess with it. Nah, Joe will though. Joe don't mind. I like this kind of [ __ ] It's not a challenge really. It's just skill kind of. Okay.
Go. Right there.
We want to really bury that mud in there.
Mixed up a little too much actually.
But that right there won't do you.
It's going to do you every time.
I'm just finger effing it right now.
Okay.
Good with that. Cool. GFCI time.
All righty.
What we got going on in here?
So, looks like these have been sprayed over.
That's always fun.
Okay, go and get this first guy out.
What kind of room do we got to maneuver? Got plenty of room to maneuver.
All right, so what I like to do here and there there is still going to be power.
No [ __ ] this thing wasn't on.
There we go. Oh yeah, you're hot.
You're hot.
You're hot.
That sucks cuz we didn't turn off the main power. Okay. So, what I do when I do electrical is literally go one for one. That's all I do. One outlet for one outlet.
And you think it's going to fit in that box, right? We surely hope you will. We surely hope you will.
All right, now we should be good. All right.
Nothing hot.
Cool. So, we go first guy right here. This is a hot.
So, go ahead and get you off right there.
All right. Here we are doing the electrical. Replacing outlets in bathrooms with GFCIs where they need to have GFCIs. That way if any water gets into your plug, uh the GFCI will pop and not pop the entire breaker downstairs. I believe that's what the point of a GFCI in a bathroom is. Hey, remind me to tell you the story of Flip 2 with the electrical debacle I had over there. You know, it's actually from flipping houses where I learned how to do so much electrical work and I kind of enjoy it.
Yeah.
Right there.
All right. Now, let's go turn the power back on and test it. All right. I didn't hear anything blow up. So, that seems like a good sign.
That's not a good Oh [ __ ] dumbass. I turned off all the outlets.
See, this is why I need a helper for all this running back and forth [ __ ] Oh my god.
So maybe it's popped. I think that's what it is. I think it's popped. So, huh.
It won't reset.
I know exactly what it is. The line and the load.
All right. How about that? Now, I just got it working. had two lights on it. I was very concerned about that. So, the line and load were backwards, which is crazy because like I said, I just took it out of the I went one for one on this, but this was not right. So, that guy's good. We popped it. She pops, resets, and she is now GFCI protected. Good deal. All right, that's one. All right, this will be the fun one. Which one would you choose if you had to choose one? So, thinking about where the electrical comes up from, the garage is basically right beneath us. Panel box is probably right beneath us. So, maybe it's this guy. We're going to open both of these up and see which one looks more promising. Um, could be a telltale if we've got many wires here and only one wire over there or vice versa. Or this might be challenge.
Just going to pop the top and see what it is. You know, I said I was going to do burpees when I got over here, but I've been sweating the entire time and well, burpees just ain't what it is. All right.
Not too sure just yet with this guy. I'm going to open up this guy cuz I do see more wires. But if I see wires coming from down, that would be another telltale.
I want to catch where the power comes in at.
And this looks like this is where the power comes down from.
And I believe I can't honestly tell.
I think the alarm at this house is about to go off, too. Every time I reset the the breaker.
All right.
Just judging by things. I'm going to take an educated guess. I'm going try my hand. [ __ ] Where did I say? I was thinking it was going to be this side.
This side looks like it has three wires coming in. This side looks like it doesn't. I'm thinking this is the side.
And the way that we'll know is once we replace the one that we get, if we get it right, if we get this right, then once we trip the GFCI, the other outlet won't work.
Oh, yeah. This has got to be it. All right. I got a bunch of wire coming in.
Yep.
Okay.
I got a bunch of wire coming in.
I don't know, man. What if they both need a GFCI? What if they're on two totally separate freaking things?
And the only way I would know that is if I put GFCIS on both of them. And if I trip one, it doesn't trip the other. And that would be crazy.
I mean, there's no way to tell. They got to be on two totally separate things.
All right, let's try to troubleshoot this. And I'm thinking we may need two GFCIs in here. It would be crazy if these were on two totally separate circuits.
Your all your wires come from down below. There's nothing going up on either side.
[ __ ] All right, let's see what happens.
All right, line and load must be backwards again.
So, just keep in mind that every one of these the line and load is backwards.
Yeah, I didn't need the burpees today.
all this back and forth on these stairs.
That's enough for me.
Switch this guy around. Now, I'm only halfhazardly putting these lines in and we will get them in completely once we know what we got.
Okay, that's in there, right?
Everything's tight.
Tight. Tight. All right. Should be good to go now. Cut the power on. That guy should come right on.
Bro, just having a helper who could run back and forth to cut the power on and off is worth its weight and gold because all this running around is killing me.
All right, she should be good now.
And of course she's not.
Son of a [ __ ] Why won't you reset?
Huh?
All right. We had power prior.
Okay.
Think I got it figured out. I don't think a GFCI needs to go here. GFCI needs to go here. So, what I think is going on is we have two legs coming in here. Okay. So, that's going to be power coming to this switch. Power going to the lights, I'm thinking. Well, it can't be that. It can't be that at all. All right, let's get ready to test. That one's back on. That one's working correctly. Let's get this one in and see. Or turn the power on. See if this work.
I'm gassed on this part of this. I mean, this is really whooping my butt here.
Well, I see a red light now. So, that's a good sign. Wired up correctly. So, check that out. All right, that guy is on. And that works.
Boy, look at that belly. I'm really not that fat.
[ __ ] Sweating my ass off in here. Maybe I am that fat. All right, so that works.
And let's go over here.
That guy works.
So, let's test.
It worked. Oh my god, that's beautiful.
Okay, so this was the side that needed it and that's the side that didn't need it. And that's why we had those issues.
When we reset, we're back on. Everything works correctly. Oh my god. Thank God for that. That was a real son of a [ __ ] Cool. GFCIS are on. They work the way that they're supposed to be. Let's go ahead and move on. It looks like we got some rain getting ready to come in. Uh, and I know that we do. I need to grab the paint. I need to grab I need to prime outside and I need to get these drywall spots dried up. So, a lot of [ __ ] to do. Let's get to it.
Oh, that alarm is so freaking annoying.
Okay, it's after 2 o'clock in the afternoon. I'm just getting back. I had to run to Sharon Williams, get the paint match. I got that phenomenal ProMar 400.
Yeah, I did. Got my vacuum up here, ready to rock and roll. And let's go ahead and start sanding these repaired areas. Pretty sure these are good to go.
Yeah, they look like they should be.
All right. Hopefully, they are. We'll find out in just a second. This one looks like it might still be a little wet. We'll see.
All right. Pretty much good deal. A little sand at the bottom right there.
We'll go and caulk all around here real quick and then we'll be ready to paint this guy. So, let's go ahead and caulk it in.
Little too much.
There you go. Right there.
Yeah, buddy.
That's nice.
I don't know how I missed it, but literally right through the front door, there was another damn bathroom. Son of a [ __ ] Wired up correctly. Good deal. Uh, another bathroom means another GFCI.
But at least there's only one plug in this bathroom, so this got to be easy.
This guy will be easy. I say that.
Yeah, it should be easy. All right, good deal. Cut the power. All right, so welcome to the dark. Um, do I want to wire this one backwards?
I ain't too for certain.
I can't remember if that was for all of them or not.
Did I have that same issue with the second one? I can't remember.
So, we got a chance to sit here and shoot the [ __ ] a little bit.
Uh, for this particular job, which I'm getting close to being done with, not too much, not too much more.
I charged uh 8.75 for this to include materials. These GFCI are $20 a piece.
So, you know, just in materials alone, I've already spent $100 in materials and I still got to go back to Lowe's. Oh, you son of a gun. I knew that was going to happen. I still got to go back to Lowe's and probably spend another 50.
Easily another 50, but fair price. I also got to go to Sheron Williams, get some paint. Um, ain't going to lie, man. I've been having some back problems. Bad.
Back is killing me.
So, yeah. 875 figure probably I don't know 600 575 of its profit if I had a helper well again that would be cut short and you got to ask yourself or think about it man let me tell you I I would have taken the short today I definitely would have all this running up and down these stairs thank god this bathroom's on the first floor.
But man, what a pain in the ass it's been just doing that.
But you make good money, it's all worth it in the end.
Okay, so quick rule of thumb when it comes to electrical. Here's just one little electrical lesson. Uh Joe, master electrician today.
Uh, your hot is your black wires. Black equals death. If you touch it when it's live, it will kill you. Not really, but that's kind of a good principle to use.
And then white is your your your neutral. And when you're plugging [ __ ] in trying to figure out where your wires go, this isn't going to solve all of your problems. But your black wires, your hot wires go on the brass and your white wires go on the silver. That's kind of helpful because the brass is kind of like kind of like um close to the same color as black, whereas the silver is close to the same color as the white wire.
Now, I'm going to use a totally different analogy, but that would have gotten me cancelled like Chud the Builder. I was going to say black and gold kind of go together like well black folks and gold do. Black folks are sort of you know really liking gold.
Nothing wrong with that. Nothing racist about that. I thought I was going to say black like or gold like the gold teeth which that was just me being a little cute. Probably being a little poor taste.
Don't cancel me, please.
Okay, that guy should be good to go.
Well, that was that was right. You see, we didn't have to do nothing with that one.
I can tell cuz I can see the red light on. So, two lights equals wired up correctly.
We are all complete. I didn't film an ending to this video, so here is one.
Uh, starting with that corner post that I had to spray foam, bondo, and then paint. Here's some outlet plate covers I needed to replace. Here's that garage side door that I scraped, painted. I even did the weather stripping on that door. Actually did the weather stripping on the garage door as well. Ironically, that wasn't called for in the report. I thought that it was these ridiculous gutter downspout extensions that were recommended in the home inspection recommending that they extend roughly 5 ft from the dwelling. Well, I certainly made sure that they do. So, here's that garage door and how well that ended up coming out. Did really good on that.
Really proud of that. And that weather stripping as well. Here's one of the repair areas in the master bathroom that I did. There's the other area. I even touched up the holiday that the original painter left. There's the second repair.
Don't mind this picture. That's still wet paint right there. There's that pretty little GFCI. Uh, one of three that I ended up doing on this job. Even cockked this piece of um countertop right there. And that's it. Got this whole job done in one day. Super happy with that. Hey, I appreciate you guys taking the time to watch this video.
Hope you enjoyed this and I'm going to look forward to sharing more with you just as soon as I possibly can. Until next time, take care.
